Dr Neil Washbourne
This talk delves into
how contemporary audiences engage with BBC Radio 2, the UK's
most-listened-to station, and their perceptions of it as a form of popular
public service broadcasting. It examines the station’s shift in the late
1990s toward a stronger focus on post-1950s rock and roll-influenced
popular music and how this commitment is reflected in its programming,
special events and features.
Combining critical
analysis with an appreciation of its listeners’ passions, this talk offers
a look at Radio 2’s evolving role in British broadcasting.
