The latest
round of Northern Writers' Awards is now open for entry!
Each
award offers a unique prize to help you take the next step in developing
your writing career, including cash prizes, mentoring, manuscript
appraisals and writing retreats. All award winners also receive access to ongoing career support
through our Northern Writers' Award Network.
The
awards are open to writers currently living anywhere in the North of
England. You can apply to as many award categories as feel relevant to you,
even if you have submitted for a category in a previous submission window.

Tempest Prize
✅ Open to unpublished, LGBTQ+ writers of
prose and poetry
✅ Awards £1000 and mentoring with the poet
and novelist Andrew McMillan
✅ Judged by writer Okechukwu Nzelu

Finchale
Award
✅ Open to single, unpublished short stories
from writers at any experience level
✅ Awards £1000
✅ Judged by musician Paul Smith and writer

Award
✅ Open to prose writers from working-class
backgrounds
✅ Awards £2000, a manuscript appraisal, and
advisory sessions with writer Michael Chaplin

Arvon Award
✅ Open to writers of fiction, children's
fiction and narrative non-fiction at any experience level
✅ Awards a tutored or untutored Arvon writing
retreat

TLC Northern
Promise Awards
✅ Open to poets and prose writers who have
faced barriers to seeing their work progress for financial reasons or
issues connected to disability, ethnicity and/or sexuality
✅ Awards £500 and an in depth editorial
report from The Literary Consultancy

The Northern Writers' Awards are produced by New
Writing North with support from Northumbria University and Arts Council
England. The full suite of awards is made possible by a range of vital
partnerships with Arvon, Bonafide Films, Channel 4, Curtis Brown, Hachette
Children’s Group, Rollem Productions, Red Production Company, The Literary
Consultancy, Newcastle University, The North Literary Agency, Oneworld
Publications, The Society of Authors, ALCS, and the Michael Marks
