Island hopping in Ireland

Island Escapes

Hi

Discover a world where time slows down, tradition thrives and breathtaking landscapes unfold with every step. Island hopping along Ireland’s coastline offers more than just beautiful scenery—it’s a journey into the heart of Ireland’s rich culture and heritage.

For centuries, people have escaped to the islands surrounding Ireland, whether for inspiration, tranquillity or pilgrimage. From the windswept shores of the Aran Islands to the literary allure of Great Blasket, these islands are brimming with stories waiting to be told.

Visit ancient stone forts and monastic ruins that have stood sentinel for centuries, listen to the lilting sounds of Irish spoken in Gaeltacht villages and immerse yourself in the enchanting culture that has inspired creatives for generations.

Whether you’re hiking on an untouched isle, gazing out at the Atlantic or sharing a moment of craic with locals, the memories you make will stay with you forever.

Island hopping in Ireland isn’t just a trip—it’s an invitation to connect with the stories, people, and traditions of these magical places.

Help Make Space for Nature in Kent and Medway

Kent residents – your voice matters! The draft Kent and Medway Local Nature Recovery Strategy is here, and it’s your chance to shape a greener, wilder future for our county.

This collaborative plan highlights how we can restore vital habitats like chalk grasslands, ancient woodlands, and coastal marshes, while protecting species such as the Shrill Carder Bee, Barn Owl, and Duke of Burgundy butterfly.

You can help by sharing your thoughts, by 12th March 2025, on the draft strategy and by identifying the best places for nature recovery. By taking part you'll play an important part in building a healthier, wildlife-rich Kent.

Celebrating 75 years of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act

December 2024 marked 75 years of the groundbreaking 1949 National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act which paved the way for the UK’s protected landscapes, including the Kent Downs and the North Downs Way. To mark this milestone, we invited people to share what the North Downs Way means to them – from peaceful moments in nature to life-changing adventures on the trail.

Looking for a challenge in 2025?

The North Downs Way National Trail is one of England’s oldest and most scenic, stretching more than 150 miles from Farnham to Dover. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or new to the trail, this iconic route offers breathtaking views, rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and charming villages. Walk parts, or all of the trail and explore the stunning Kent Downs along the way.

Explore the Samuel Palmer Art Exhibition

Following the success of last year’s Samuel Palmer: Visionary Landscapes exhibition, you can now explore it from the comfort of your own home! Curated by the Darent Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme, part of Kent Downs National Landscape, the exhibition delves into Samuel Palmer’s Shoreham years showcasing his life and work alongside responses from contemporary artists. An interactive online catalogue is now available, making it easy to explore specific artworks and areas of interest.

Downs on your Doorstep project - connecting children with nature

Running from April 2024 to March 2025 at Brockhill Country Park, Downs on Your Doorstep is a Farming in Protected Landscapes funded project, delivered by Kent Country Parks. This project focuses on creating a deeper, long-lasting connection between local children and the landscape.

Working closely with Saltwood Primary School, the project provides repeat visits to Brockhill Country Park, giving children the chance to explore the changing seasons and develop a lasting relationship with nature. To support ongoing outdoor education, the project will offer teacher training and fund a Forest School Level 3 certification for a staff member, empowering the school to continue nature-based learning well beyond the project’s end.

Additionally, free visits are offered to Kent schools with higher-than-average Free School Meal eligibility or those in the county’s most deprived areas, ensuring all children can experience the beauty and benefits of the Kent Downs.

Project funded through Defra’s Farming in Protected Landscapes programme

Volunteers learn hedge-laying at Stockbury Community Orchard

A group of dedicated volunteers honed their hedge-laying skills at Stockbury Community Orchard, creating a dense, wildlife-friendly habitat and windbreak – a vast improvement over the poorly maintained hedges often seen. This work continues the legacy of two successful Heritage Fund projects, The Mid Kent Downs Orchards Project and Kent Orchards for Everyone, which supported numerous community orchards across the area.
