Behind the scenes
Get a sneak peek into the majesty of
Wagner's work with these musical
highlights from The Flying
Dutchman, recorded during
rehearsals with
the cast and the
Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North
under conductor Garry Walker.
|
|
|
|
|
Preparing for The Flying
Dutchman
We
speak to Director Annabel Arden about
her inspiration and hopes for the show.
“I am celebrating more than thirty
years of working at Opera North where I
have been able to take more creative
risks than anywhere else, supported by
a truly creative company, and a
fabulous audience. This production of
the Flying Dutchman is no exception."
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Five Reasons...
...to
catch The Flying Dutchman while
you can.
1.
The Stuff of Legend
Imagine
sailing the high seas for eternity.
That’s the curse which has been visited
upon The Flying Dutchman with the
chance of redemption only happening
every seven years.
2. A
Tale for our Times
While
staying true to the musical and
narrative meaning of Wagner’s work,
this production has also been informed
by conversations with people
experiencing displacement in today’s
world.
3.
Girl Power
The
woman Senta lies at the heart of our
Flying Dutchman as she alone sees
beyond the money, power and bureaucracy
around her.
4. A
Storm of Music
The
Flying Dutchman was
Wagner’s first real success, and you
can see why with the power of his music
filling the auditorium right from the
start.
5. A
Great Night Out
Remember,
opera newbies can bag two fantastic Try
It ON seats for £20
each, it’s just £10 for under 30s and
students, and 16 to
20-year-olds can come for
FREE!

Hi
This February we have a selection of great
shows including a heartfelt and humorous Olivier nominated
play, a magical and messy family show and a satirical return
to Sunnydale High.
Alongside what is happening on our stage, we
wanted to share what has been happening behind the scenes -
our Theatre30
film is a celebration of this special project from the people
who made it happen, and our Cellar Theatre film gives
audiences a sneak peek at the exciting new shows in our
spring season.
|
"What the theatre has been able to create
is life changing stories for people."
- Keisha
Hamilton, Creative Associate
|
|
In 2024 Lawrence
Batley Theatre turned 30 and we celebrated the occasion
with an exhibition Theatre30.
In this short film,
Keisha and photographer Daniel Johnson-Gray talk about
the ideas and inspiration for this special project and
the Theatre30 participants talk about what it has meant
to them.
|
|
|
|
The Theatre30
exhibition has now been extended. Visit our Gallery to see
the portraits and discover the stories for yourself. The
exhibition is open Wed - Sat, 10am - 5pm and 90 minutes
before show times. Free entry, donations are welcome.
|
"It's a place we can champion new
writing and a place that we really love to champion Northern
talent."
- Olivia Race, head
of Creative Programme
|
Ahead of our Cellar
Theatre spring season, Olivia spoke to West Yorkshire
artists Philip Stokes and Natalie Bellingham about
their brave new works Shellshocked
and Look
After Your Knees that put Northern
voices and stories in the spotlight.

Our top pick for February
|
⭐⭐⭐⭐“Beautiful and timeless" - The Reviews Hub
When Yasser decides to take part in itikaf,
sleeping and fasting in the mosque for the last ten nights of
Ramadan, he soon regrets his decision. But as he navigates
smug worshippers, shared bathrooms, and recurring thoughts of
chunky chips, Yasser’s isolation forces him to confront a
side of himself he’s been trying to keep hidden.
Heartfelt and full of humour, don't miss this Olivier-award nominated play on our main stage
this February.

Help Make Space for Nature in Kent and Medway
|
|
|
Kent
residents – your voice matters! The draft Kent and Medway Local
Nature Recovery Strategy is here, and it’s your chance to shape a
greener, wilder future for our county.
This collaborative plan highlights how we can restore vital
habitats like chalk grasslands, ancient woodlands, and coastal
marshes, while protecting species such as the Shrill Carder Bee,
Barn Owl, and Duke of Burgundy butterfly.
You can help by sharing your thoughts, by 12th March 2025, on the
draft strategy and by identifying the best places for nature
recovery. By taking part you'll play an important part in building
a healthier, wildlife-rich Kent.

Celebrating 75 years of the National Parks and
Access to the Countryside Act
|
|
|
December
2024 marked 75 years of the groundbreaking 1949 National Parks and
Access to the Countryside Act which paved the way for the UK’s
protected landscapes, including the Kent Downs and the North Downs Way. To mark this
milestone, we invited people to share what the North Downs Way
means to them – from peaceful moments in nature to life-changing
adventures on the trail.
|
|
|
Looking for a challenge in 2025?
|
|
|
The
North Downs Way National Trail is one of England’s oldest and
most scenic, stretching more than 150 miles from Farnham to Dover.
Whether you’re an experienced hiker or new to the trail, this
iconic route offers breathtaking views, rolling hills, ancient
woodlands, and charming villages. Walk parts, or all of the trail
and explore the stunning Kent Downs along the way.

Downs on your Doorstep project - connecting children
with nature
Running from April 2024 to March 2025
at Brockhill Country Park, Downs on Your Doorstep is a Farming in
Protected Landscapes funded project, delivered by Kent Country Parks.
This project focuses on creating a deeper, long-lasting connection
between local children and the landscape.
Working closely with Saltwood Primary School, the project provides
repeat visits to Brockhill Country Park, giving children the chance
to explore the changing seasons and develop a lasting relationship
with nature. To support ongoing outdoor education, the project will
offer teacher training and fund a Forest School Level 3 certification
for a staff member, empowering the school to continue nature-based
learning well beyond the project’s end.
Additionally, free visits are offered to Kent schools with
higher-than-average Free School Meal eligibility or those in the
county’s most deprived areas, ensuring all children can experience
the beauty and benefits of the Kent Downs.
Project funded through Defra’s Farming in Protected Landscapes programme.

Volunteers learn hedge-laying at Stockbury
Community Orchard
|
|
|
A
group of dedicated volunteers honed their hedge-laying skills at
Stockbury Community Orchard, creating a dense, wildlife-friendly
habitat and windbreak – a vast improvement over the poorly
maintained hedges often seen. This work continues the legacy of two
successful Heritage Fund projects, The Mid Kent Downs Orchards
Project and Kent Orchards for Everyone, which
supported numerous community orchards across the area.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
★★★★★ - "All
rise for this powerfully uplifting theatrical event"- Evening
Standard
Aaron Sorkin’s riveting, award-winning stage adaptation of the
seminal American novel about racial injustice and childhood
innocence became a Broadway and West End sensation with
star-studded sell-out seasons on both sides of the Atlantic. Now
this thrilling courtroom drama comes to Lowry.
Successful lawyer, Atticus Finch, encourages kindness and empathy
in his children, but is pushed to the limits of these qualities
himself when he resolves to uncover the truth in a town that
seems determined to hide it.
Set in 1934 Alabama, To Kill a Mockingbird was inspired by
novelist Harper Lee’s own childhood and has sold more than 45
million copies worldwide. It won the Pulitzer Prize for
Literature and was long at the top of the banned book lists.
