Happy New Year!!!

Black and white pictures of Kirklees Library buildings from the 1900s, Batley, Heckmondwike and Holmfirth

Picture courtesy of the Kirklees Image Archive

Can you believe we are a quarter of a century into the 2000's? It is hard to believe...not to mention that the children and young people this newsletter is aimed at weren't even born at the start of the millennium!

We thought we'd celebrate by looking back at some pictures of our Libraries from 100 years ago. Can you recognise any of them? One of them has changed quite a bit! All these images can be found online on the Kirklees Image Archive.

You can search images from the comfort of your own home (or one of our free library computers!) or come along to the Local Studies Library on Victoria Lane in Huddersfield Town Centre ( Opening times ) and have a look at our collections of old photographs, maps, newspapers and more. Why not try to find some old pictures of your house or discover what was there before it was built? It's a great activity to do as a family.

Holocaust Memorial Day- Lest we Forget

The covers of The Boys in the Striped Pyjamas and The Boy At the Top of the Mountain

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day (27th January) we wanted to highlight some books by a thought provoking author.

Many people are now familiar with John Boyne's stunning novel, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, which heartbreakingly demonstrates the inherent friendliness of children in even the bleakest of situations. The devastating consequences of the  children's actions bring home the realities of the holocaust to those "just following orders."

Whilst not directly about the holocaust, The Boy at the Top of the Mountain is a standout novel, set in the lead-up to World War 2 and again mainly viewed through the eyes of a child. We see our young protagonist become orphaned and forced to leave his French home, his multicultural friends and move to Germany to live with his aunt, a servant in the Berghof...the mountain home of Hitler.

We see through a child's eyes how betrayals, deception and lies can be used to change a person's perception of themselves, of others, of right and wrong. This cleverly written novel will spark questions and debate and open up discussion about very difficult subjects.

These books are normally recommended for ages 10/11 and upwards. Click on the books to see which libraries have copies and don't forget you can order them in from other libraries for free if your local library hasn't currently got a copy. You'll also find a list of some of Boyne's other inspirational books (good for older children and young people).

Handbagged Artwork

The Queen and her most powerful subject, behind closed doors.

Moira Buffini’s clever and fiercely funny comedy is a fly-on-the-wall look at what might have happened when Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher came face-to-face in the privacy of the palace.

Over the course of a decade did the Monarch and the Iron Lady ever find a common ground, or did their stiff upper lips reign supreme?

This highly entertaining Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch and Theatre Nation Partnerships production explores the intense relationship between two of history’s most revered female leaders, and the legacy they each left behind.

Dear Reader,

And a happy new year to you all. I’d like to share two good reads I had over the holiday. First is Maurice and Maralyn – quite the most perfect book I’ve read in a long time, and the one I would recommend gifting to everyone you know. A normal British couple, a voyage, a whale, a survival story (four months at sea!) – but ultimately a tale of resilience, love and loss – faultless ingredients of course. Utterly extraordinary (and surprisingly ordinary) – and beautifully written. Second is Alexei Navalny’s autobiography Patriot, which I’m nearly through. Despite the subject matter – and it’s crazy to think he only died in February last year – his book is full of warmth, humour and insight into not just the Russian state but the Russian people. How those who can’t bear the regime must feel his loss.

Have a great week.

WHAT’S EXCITING ME THIS WEEK

Micro Workouts

Fitness goals set for 2025? I’m definitely down to do more yoga… As I approach my 50th, I’m feeling far less flexible so that’s my focus. But as ever, it’s all about time, which is why I’m intrigued to know whether a wee little workout is better than nothing at all. Read on.

What’s On In The West End?

Like my two books, I have two theatre recommendations upcoming. The RSC’s Kyoto is coming to town from Stratford and I’ve been told by anyone who’s seen it, it is quite extraordinary. I’m also down to see the Royal Court’s Roald Dahl play Giant which transfers to the West End this spring. More recommendations here.

Our holidays reviewed in your words…

The trip was an amazing combination of sights and exertion and stories and music and laughter. That seems in a way to sum up Irish life, or my current take on it.

I loved the pubs—to be packed into a small space with lively music and everyone so into it, clapping and smiling and friendly. I compare it to the wine bars I go to here in Chicago—much more sedate and, well, sober. Physical exercise, gorgeous views and wonderful people. It was a very rewarding and eye-opening tour.

Many thanks to Brendan, Maria, my travel mates, and Wilderness Ireland!
