Film Academy Recommends |

|
The
Apartment |
1960,
dir. Billy Wilder |
|
'The
healing nature of a feel-good film lies in its ability to leave the viewer
feeling elated and optimistic by the time the credits begin to roll. The
Apartment easily achieves this, sustaining a high quota of laughs while also
exploring the themes of loneliness and our need for connection. They’re borne
out through the film’s razor-sharp dialogue, which has the rhythm of a musical
number, replete with the kind of one-liners that came to define a Billy Wilder
film. If only life sounded this good.'

Women
on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown |
1988,
dir. Pedro Almodóvar |
|
'An
exuberant farce, flushed red with frenzied melodrama, this is Almodóvar’s
most irresistible cinematic confection. The slew of outrageous events that
befall jilted protagonist Pepa are expertly orchestrated; even the film's most
frivolous flourishes (mambo taxi ride anyone?) feel grounded by relatable
emotional stakes and a sardonic study of sexual mores. Knock back this heady
mixture of style, absurdity and social commentary like a glass of spiked
gazpacho and savor the delirium.'

BFI Film Academy
Recommends: Nosferatu |
Sat
25 Jan 19:30 |Â Midlands Arts Centre,
Birmingham |
|
Following
his acclaimed films The Witch and The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers' new take on
Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Lily-Rose
Depp) and the terrifying vampire (Bill Skarsgård) infatuated with her, causing
untold horror in its wake.
Â
Eggers’
stylish horror features a supporting cast that includes another sterling turn
from Willem Dafoe, here playing the famed vampire hunter Professor Albin
Eberhart Von Franz.
