It's a 2 show weekend!

'FIREFLIES AT DAWN'

Saturday 29th June

at The Warehouse in Holbeck

Show starts at 7.30pm

Fireflies at Dawn invites you to embark on a journey of discovery, where emotions take flight and senses awaken to the soft rustle of wings.

This enchanting dance theatre piece weaves together the threads of inclusivity, and self-expression, exploring the richness of our shared humanity and the strength found in our search for connection. This delicate interplay of sound and motion invites you to discover the lived experience of blind and visually impaired people and to pay attention to how we connect to our senses, ourselves and others. Witness the power of vulnerability in this emotional and sensory show.

Co-created and performed by visually impaired and sighted dancers, Fireflies at Dawn continues the companies investigation into how and why we move and dance. The show uses embedded audio description, sounds, lights and touch as well as innovative new wearable technology, echome -  to enhance movement perceptions for both performers and audiences alike.

This is a pay what you decide performance.

'Tales From A Hostile Environment'

Sunday 30th June

at The Warehouse in Holbeck

Show starts at 2.30pm

Members of the Actors for Human Rights network are mobilising across England and will present staged readings of this script in several locations during the week before election day, including here in Leeds.

A general election looms, which inevitably means a renewed demonisation of immigrants living here.
When ice&fire was founded in 2003, the rhetoric was similar and the environment for many immigrants was hostile in practice if not in name. Since then, policies and laws affecting immigrants and those who love them, work with them, and rely upon them have become increasingly punitive.
The majority of immigrants living here do not have the right to vote in this election. With this new script, a curated collection of first-hand testimonies we have collected over 20 years from people impacted by these policies and laws, we invite you to listen and consider these voices during this election cycle and beyond.

This is a pay what you decide performance.

Did you know about our autism offer?

Kirklees Libraries are committed to making our libraries accessible to all, which is why we’ve created a social story for each of our locations. These stories are designed to give those who may be struggling with anxiety around visiting the library a step by step guide as to what to expect on visiting us, helping people to familiarise themselves with the layout beforehand as well as being able to recognise our staff in order to ask for assistance where needed.  You can find out more about our social stories by visiting our website: Locations and opening times | Kirklees Council

Within our libraries we also have a selection of autism friendly, sensory resources you can use in order to make your visit more enjoyable. These include fidget toys, stress balls, glow eggs, glitter sticks and mini beanbags. Boxes of resources are available at Batley, Dewsbury, Marsden and Rawthorpe Dalton Library and can be booked in advance for use at other libraries. Please ask at your local library for more details.

The latest from the Jurassic Coast Trust team

The first edition of the Jurassic Coast Collection Newsletter has just been circulated. Subscribe here to receive updates about the palaeontological work carried out by Chris Reedman and the Jurassic Coast team.

Work is underway to create an accessible guide to the Jurassic Coast, a resource designed to empower neurodivergent individuals or those with physical or non-visible disabilities to visit the Jurassic Coast. Contact Lauren to get involved.

The Jurassic Coast Geo-Heritage Sustainability Study has been entered into the 2024 Dorset Business Awards. This is on the basis of its effect on how we will be able to manage the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in the future and therefore all social impact for communities, and all who interact with it.

On 6th June, Sam led a geology walk for the West Bay Discovery Centre as part of the GroundWork Gallery tour for Dorset Artweek and their Ground Beneath Our Feet exhibition. The walk included a number of artists involved in the exhibition and who are interested in the ways art can help engage people with the environment.

We have recently enjoyed engaging with lots of residents and visitors at the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival and the Bridport food festival (with thanks to Purbeck Ice Cream for kindly paying for our pitch in advance, enabling us to be at Bridport Food Festival). In the near future, JCT ambassadors will be at Seaton Natural 27-28 July, Pebblebed Heath Week during 28-July to 03-Aug, Portland Week during 19-25 Aug, and Melplash Show 22-Aug.

July in the Kent Downs

Read on for our latest updates and a peek at what's happening in the Kent Downs National Landscape over the coming weeks.

This month, we're celebrating the unveiling of a new hilltop artwork in Lullingstone Country Park, revealing why the Downs are so popular for viticulture, and getting excited about the arrival of lavender season!

Vineyards of the Kent Downs

The gentle slopes and chalky soils of the North Downs make the Kent Downs National Landscape an ideal region for growing grapes and producing world-class wines.

Often referred to as the Garden of England, our region offers a perfect blend of soil and climate that has made it a burgeoning hub for viticulture.  In fact, the terroir – the combination of soil, topography and microclimate – is remarkably like the Champagne region of France, which is why the sparkling wines from Kent’s vineyards rival the finest offerings from across the Channel.

With many vineyards set against the Kent Downs to explore, our latest blog will be your guide to discovering the top winery experiences on offer. Cheers! 🥂

Lavender season is here!

Lavender season at Castle Farm in the Darent Valley is a must-see. The landscape turns a vibrant purple and the air is filled with a calming scent.

You can wander through the rows, take guided tours, bring your own picnic, or simply enjoy the stunning views.

Plus, the farm offers a variety of lavender products, from essential oils to culinary treats, so you can bring a piece of the experience home.

Don't miss out on this unique and beautiful time of year in the Kent countryside!

Unveiling 'Ripple: A Sculpture in the Landscape' by James Tunnard

The new permanent artwork, 'Ripple', was revealed at a special event in Lullingstone Country Park on 21st June. The opening celebration brought together local school children, plus over 40 attendees including poets and others who were part of the project.

‘Ripple’ is in the Orchid Bank wildflower meadow and features a seating area for visitors to take in the beautiful views across the valley.

This piece, inspired by the park, the local countryside, and artist Samuel Palmer, was commissioned by the Darent Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme.

Mapping the Heritage Ponds of the Kent Downs

Get Involved

We’re seeking intrepid volunteer citizen scientists to map the hidden ponds that dot the Kent Downs landscape.

Your invaluable contribution will pave the way for future restoration efforts, breathing new life into these overlooked aquatic havens.

All you need is a computer, an internet connection, and a passion for conservation. This desk-based role is perfect for all abilities.

The Kent Downs Heritage Ponds project is funded through Defra’s Farming In Protected Landscapes programme and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thank you to National Lottery players for making this project possible.

Keep up to date with the
North Downs Way

Are you a keen walker, or are you located on, or close to, the North Downs Way National Trail? Well good news! There is now a dedicated newsletter where you can keep up to date with the latest news, inspiration and events from along the trail.

Places to visit in the Kent Downs
Looking for inspiration for your next adventure in our National Landscape? Look no further! Here's our top spot to visit this July:

Farthing Common

Farthing Common, perched at 185 metres above sea level, is one of the highest points in the Kent Downs. On a clear day, it offers breathtaking views across Kent, with glimpses of the cliffs at Fairlight in Sussex and even the distant South Downs.

This historic site lies at the junction of an ancient trackway winding through the Kent countryside, connecting to the Elham Valley and the old Roman road, now Stone Street, which once stretched from Portus Lemanis in West Hythe to Canterbury.

You can explore the area by walking or cycling, with the North Downs Way National Trail passing through and offering scenic routes to nearby Wye and Folkestone. For those who prefer a leisurely visit, there's a free car park that’s perfect for enjoying a stunning sunset.
