Here are a few ideas of things to do this weekend. Or, if you fancy staying inside because of the inclement weather, perhaps you could consider my debut novel Christmas Evie, published by Champagne Book Group, which is available in paperback on Amazon now (details at the bottom of this post). I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Live Broadcasting at
HowlRound TV
Hosted by Xavier de
Sousa and video work directed by Richard Warburton, Slow Cooking Live is a
live podcast-video art experiment, inviting artists who have a history of
migration and also work with food-making and food-sharing as creative
tools. Together, they will spend the day buying food from local markets and
independent shops, cook together and then travel to Theatre in the Mill to
share it all with you.
Cooking recipes that
are relevant to the guests’ own cultural background (or their favourite
foods), Selina, Toni-Dee and Sonia will discuss the origins of the food,
the impact on their communities and how they have incorporated it into
their creative practices.
This is a live

Refugee
Week,17th-23rd June 2024
Books can be powerful tools to help us understand the
world. For thousands of years, stories have been our way of making
sense of the world and our place in it. They help us better
understand other people, and ourselves too.
Books by and about refugees can help us see the refugee experience
through the eyes of individual people, rather than just as a
faceless mass as often depicted in the media. By telling personal
stories books can help us understand the human impact of forced
migration and displacement. All of which can help us grow our
compassion and inspire us to take action.
Love Reading 4 Kids has compiled
an excellent collection of books which appeal to a wide range of
ages and are perfect to help initiate a discussion as a family to
explore what it really means to escape your home and seek refuge
elsewhere.

RAINER MARIA RILKE
Poetry Reading
with poet and translator Martyn Crucefix
City Library, Monday 17th June 7-9pm
With poet and translator Martyn Crucefix from his recently
published translation of the German poet Rilke.
René Maria Rilke (1875 – 1926), better known as Rainer
Maria Rilke, was a Bohemian-Austrian poet. He is considered one of the
most significant poets to have ever written in the German language.
Book your place here - https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/bradfordlibraries
or text on 07717717833.
In partnership with the Beehive Poets.
René Maria Rilke (1875 – 1926), better known as Rainer
Maria Rilke, was a Bohemian-Austrian poet. He is considered one of the
most significant poets to have ever written in the German language. His
passionate, haunting images vividly capture the everyday combined with
a yearning to commune with the ineffable. In an age of disbelief,
solitude, and profound anxiety, such themes position him as a
transitional figure, between the traditional and the modernist poets.
He wrote both verse and highly lyrical prose. Among English-language
readers, his best-known work is the Duino
Elegies; his two most famous prose works are the Letters to a Young Poet and
the semi-autobiographical Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge.
Martyn Crucefix is an award winning poet and translator. Recent publications:
Between a Drowning Man (2023) is published by Salt. Also, Cargo of Limbs (Hercules
Editions, 2019); These
Numbered Days, translations of Peter Huchel (Shearsman,
2019) won the Schlegel-Tieck Translation Prize, 2020; translations of
essays by Lutz Seiler, In
Case of Loss, is published by And Other Stories (2023). A
Rilke Selected, Change
Your Life, has just been published by Pushkin Press
(2024). Blog and website at http://www.martyncrucefix.com

Kate
Molleson introduces Sound Within Sound
Sound Within Sound is about bold composers across the globe
redefining classical music on their own terms. It’s about
hearing the 20th century through their stories and their
defiant work. I started writing the book to fill what I saw
as a gap in ‘the narrative’; soon I gave up on ‘the
narrative’ altogether, fired up instead by the tangle of
unruly parallels and rogue offshoots. No neat packaging
here: this is the mess and magnitude of radical minds
articulating the reality of their times.
The mission of the book was to widen the lens
and to get this stuff heard. Now the Southbank Centre
festival is doing exactly that by inviting top performers
to showcase the work of these sidelined composers at the
UK’s flagship classical music institution. A galvanising
act of conviction! And an incredibly rare chance to hear
some of the most courageous music ever written. See you
there.

broadcaster and journalist

The
geology in this part of the coast is the oldest along the World
Heritage Site, dating back to the Triassic period of 250 million
years ago, when the land was a harsh desert, patrolled by ancient
reptiles, crossed by braided rivers and lashed by storms. From the
comfort of Stuart Line Cruises' boat you'll have a brilliant view
of the rocks, and will be able to picture the extreme conditions in
which they were laid down.
Tickets are just £15 adults, £10 children, and are available from Stuart Line Cruises.

Tickets
are on sale now for the National Theatre's multi
award-winning, smash-hit production of Dear
England, heading to The Lowry next May, following its
record-breaking run in the West End!
Written
by James Graham and directed by Rupert
Goold, this 'back-of-the-net winner' (The i)
tells the story of the England men's football team under manager
Gareth Southgate, in a 'gripping' (Times) examination of
nation and game.
It's
time to change the game.
The
country that gave the world football has since delivered a
painful pattern of loss. Why can't England's men win at their own
game?
The team
has the worst track record for penalties in the world, and
manager Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face
up to the years of hurt to take team and country back to the
promised land.

CHRISTMAS EVIE rom com by Karen Naylor
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 February 2024
This is a fun, engaging, romantic comedy of mistaken identities, of finding (then losing- for a while at least-) The One, or is it more than one fella? For when the two guys look so alike but behave so differently it's easy to see why Evie is completely confused. But at least her life isn't boring any more. On the horizon is an invite to spend Christmas in Capri. I've been to Capri and would walk over hot coals and several family members' bodies, to go back, so Evie hopes for the best, juggles her dates, and along the way falls hard. But who is the love of her life? Luca or Romano? Afterall one is a lawyer and the other helps out at his sister's tearooms.
Karen Naylor mines the humour of these romantic encounters of mixed-up identities, and intentions with great wit and skill, keeping us, the reader, and her protagonist, the titular Evie, florist extraordinnaire, dangling, never sure exactly what is going to happen next or who with. It's a game of revolving doors and keeping characters apart, and it's no mean writerly feat. Impressively done.
Needless to say the path for Evie to true love (and along the way some amazing sex - I'd say this is a spicy and saucy read) is not smooth. But I was rooting for Evie all the way, she's the sort of girl you'd want as a mate, and want her to find her heart's desire. Does it work out for her? Well, read it to find out.
"Read the book in 1 day. Loved it" Sophie, West Yorkshire, England,5 stars
"I'm hooked" Barbara W, New Zealand, 5 stars
"Lovers of romantic fiction will find this a winner! " Louise, UK 5 Stars
