Hazard @ Seven
It's 1st June tomorrow and our Summer Sessions kick off with Terri Shaltiel.
Terri is a powerful funky singer as well as a band-leader and

the bar, if chilly. Pay What You Feel. Organised by MEWL Music.
On Sunday 2nd June,
1.30-4pm, JazzLeeds – We Bop.

Brown. Few singers are less interested in taking a musical
journey in a straight line than Emily Brown; jazz may be rocked, folk
may be funked, and ballads may be taken deeper than a diving bell. Pure
entertainment. Seven

It's All
Greek with Dame Siân
Phillips & Alex Jennings
9 Jun, 2:30pm | Live at The Lowry, Salford Quays
A woman longing for her
lover; a wronged wife plotting her revenge; a squaddie traumatised by war.
Love, laughter, tears, and treachery. And a touch of murder. Whatever life
brings us, the ancient Greeks have the right words for it.
Dame
Siân Phillips and Alex
Jennings breathe majestic life into Zeus, Hera, Oedipus,
and Medea, among others, in David Stuttard’s sparkling
translations. As they navigate through youthful high jinks, adult chaos, and
the preoccupations of old age, their wit and wisdom are a road map for our
modern age.
Directed by Stuttard, this
Olivier Award-winning duo give voice to stories, scenes, and poems from
ancient Greece, works that feel so modern they might have been written
yesterday, which – profound or poignant, fast moving, funny, or at times
downright preposterous – help make sense of our lives today.
The performance will be
followed by an audience Q&A with the performers and the director.

time we asked who really benefits from the values at the core of our society?
Enjoy our Fane Online with
writer, historian, broadcaster, and comedian Subhadra Das as
she discusses her new book, Uncivilised: Ten Lies that Made the West.
Some things are given:
knowledge is power, time is money, justice is blind. But many of the big
ideas that underpin Western civilisation are just that - ideas. But what if
they're not just ideas? What if they're outright lies?
Hear Subhadra explore the
ten founding ideas of Western civilisation that encourage us to look at the
world with fresh eyes.

June in
the Kent Downs
Read on for our latest
updates and a peek at what's happening in the Kent Downs
National Landscape over the next month.
This month, we're celebrating conservation success stories
across the Downs, seeking intrepid volunteer citizen scientists for
our new Heritage Ponds project, sharing our favourite upcoming
GeoAdventures, and gearing up for the longest day of year.
|
|
We're on a mission to map and restore Kent's
heritage ponds
Embark on a journey
to discover the hidden treasures of the Kent Downs through
our new Heritage Ponds project.
With the power of citizen science, our team of volunteers and
local groups will use Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) mapping
technology to peer through the veil of time, digitally removing
layers to reveal long-forgotten ponds.
These ponds aren't just relics of the past; they're vital
sanctuaries for wildlife, such as the protected great crested
newt and the red-listed turtle dove. Working with project
partners, we'll review the mapped data and identify ponds for
potential restoration. By re-establishing these 'ghost'
ponds, we're not just reviving history but safeguarding
tomorrow's biodiversity in the Kent Downs.
|
|
|
Get Involved
Are you fascinated by local stories and old maps?
Dive deep into the
murky waters of the past by becoming a Heritage Ponds
Volunteer!
No experience necessary, we’ll provide the training. All you need
is a computer, an internet connection, and a passion for
conservation. This desk-based role is perfect for
adventurers of all abilities!
|
|
|
The Kent Downs Heritage
Ponds project is funded through Defra’s Farming In Protected Landscapes
programme and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thank you to
National Lottery players for making this project possible. The
Farming in Protected Landscapes fund helps farmers, land managers
and others to deliver projects in the farmed landscape under the
themes of climate, nature, people and place.

Barn owl chicks
discovered
Two
barn owl nest boxes installed in the Darent Valley last year are
celebrating new arrivals. A late May monitoring visit revealed
three fuzzy barn owl chicks, about one week old, in the nest box at
Filston Farm. Funded by the Kent Downs through Defra's Farming in Protected Landscapes
project, the initiative installed eight boxes in 2023 to boost the
population of these beloved birds.

|
Return of the early
gentian
This
rare chalk grassland flower has been observed at Western
Heights for the first time since 2013! Its return is partly
due to successful winter grazing by Dexter cattle, which created
the shorter surrounding vegetation it needs to thrive. The
grassland at Western Heights in Dover is part of the Kent
Downs National Landscape and is managed by the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership.

Park Gate Down
⠀This seven hectare area of chalk grassland on the east
side of a dry valley is a designated Site of Special Scientific
Interest (SSSI).
Discover a wealth of wild flowers, some unusual such as the slender
bedstraw, adder’s-tongue fern, columbine, musk orchid and the
scarce late spider orchid.
In 2007 the site was re-named "Park Gate Down -The Hector
Wilks Reserve" in honour of Kent Wildlife Trust’s founder
member and former chairman who was responsible for creating a
stronghold in Kent for the rare monkey orchid, which is also found
here.
In the warmer summer months, you might spot reptiles such as adder,
common lizard and slow worm basking in the grass.
The nature reserve is open at all times and is free to enter. Visit
from May to August for the best chance of spotting rare orchids and
wild flowers.

Notes
From a Small Island
|
Bill
Bryson’s smash-hit memoir journeys to the stage in an
acclaimed adaptation, starring national treasure Les
Dennis.
From
Calais to the Highlands, Bill travels the length and
breadth of Britain rediscovering the green and pleasant
land he calls his home, but how can the nation that
produced Marmite and Gardener’s Question Time
hold such a special place in this American’s heart?
This
brand-new production is a laughter-filled show that
celebrates one of the nation's most treasured books, by one
of the country’s most beloved authors. A tribute to all the
quirks and idiosyncrasies of our small island, that will
leave you feeling positively proud to be British!

|
Hi,
Volunteer Week kicks off on Sat 1 June and
we want to say a BIG thank you to all our volunteers! An
essential part of our team, each of our 94 stewards gives
their time and enthusiasm to help us provide a great
experience for you. If
you're interested in volunteering, we'd love to hear from
you!
Over the last year we partnered with Third
Sector Leaders Kirklees and Music in Kirklees to run a
brand new volunteering programme called Future Creative.
The programme aimed to reach people aged 16-24 from diverse
and disadvantaged backgrounds. 75 people joined the
programme and they volunteered nearly 1,700 hours over the
year. The programme has now finished and you can read
more about how it went here.
This month we're really excited to be able
to showcase two new performances from local writer and
director, Philip Stokes. Our relationship with Phil began
in 2021 as co-producers of Jesus, Jane, Mother & Me,
which won the Adelaide Fringe Holden Street Theatre Award
and whilst at Adelaide Fringe went on to win the Critics
Award for Best Play. Then last year we supported the
Edinburgh Festival Fringe run of LASH, where it won
Theatre Weekly’s Best Monologue. We can't wait to share
these new shows with you.
Check out this month's highlights below or head
