Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, meeting Monday 24 June 2024

Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 24 June 2024 at 5.30 pm - 7.00 pm. With thanks to Kathy for taking the minutes in my absence.

Present: Kathy, Molly, Michelle, David, Ellie

Apologies: Karen, Rueben, Paul

Welcome / Attendance

New member, Ellie joined us.  We had a round of introductions, talking about our writing styles, genres, and generally our reasons for being here.  Ellie introduced herself, she is local to the area originally and has moved back after finishing Uni.  Studies were around script writing and drama.  She likes comedy stuff, does some performing herself and indicated her fondness for dialogue (a girl after my own heart…) 😊

Really hope you can join us next time Ellie – and welcome!

Minutes of Last meeting

Taken as read.

Work in Progress

Kathy - in terms of writing, nothing of note.

Michelle  – New job has taken up much of her time.  However, she now feels the need to get back into writing and create a bit more structured approach to it.  Is toying with entering the National Poetry Competition, with her poem on the broken vase.

Barabara – Has since written a short story, which she has brought, no details at this stage – all will be revealed at feedback session…stayed tuned.

David – Written a couple of pieces and has brought them with him.  One is story of 700 words and then a short one of about 150, based on the May theme of maypoles.

Molly – Attended the Nabeela Ahmed poetry workshop and has written some poems and a short story.

Competitions / Festivals /Other

Nothing new, other than National Poetry Competition that Michelle mentioned.  Submission deadline is 31 October 2024.  1st prize is £5,000, first entry costs £8, subsequent entries are £5.  Any theme.

Writing Plans

Kathy – Try and get some more editing changes done on Tobias, but also write fresh for Book Puppet.

Michelle – Will definitely try to write a poem, as she is inspired by the colour grey.  Everything seems to be grey coloured at the moment like cars, kitchen designs, bathroom designs, windows and doors and so on. When she thinks of grey, she usually associates it with things not being quite right.  And there’s plenty of things going on in the word that are not quite right.

Barabara – Further to her ‘Valetta’ story, the teenager who inherits money at her coming of age, she has an end in mind - so will aim to complete.

David – Has a new idea for a story called ‘Pastures Old’.  Will be about finding lost great-grandfathers, will be a work of fiction and set in modern times.  Putting everything else on back burner, especially ‘Done to Death’. Will lay that aside for 4-6 weeks mainly to give his friend (the inspiration behind it) a chance to digest and comment.

Molly – To continue writing her morning pages, 10 mins per day, and intends to write short story next.

Ellie – Considering writing a one-act play.  The plot to centre around a family of 4, the children have different father and possibly with a comedic theme.

 -

Feedback

Barabara – ‘In Deep Water’.  Amusing short around a gentleman who recognises an Olympic swimmer on TV – whilst shopping in the middle of Curry’s - and tells a shop assistant how that swimmer saved his life when his car crashed into a body of water.  Lovely twist at end – the car crashed after a no-show blind date (hence distracted driving resulting in accident) – who turned out to be the shop assistant he was regaling.  We laughed at that and commented on how fun it was – and very much like a Tales of the Unexpected!  For anyone reading this who can remember those…

David – Read his maypole story (set around WW1 ?), with ladies dancing and a lovely touch on how the graveyards of the church were empty as their young men lay buried in a foreign field, and not home.  Comments were that it was quite touching and poignant.  Side discussion followed on the demise of social/community events like these, so it created a picture for us. Also re-read the story of the food market experience in France.  He withheld the info that this was an abridged this version of a previous story he’d fed back.  We did pick up on that, to say how it had improved the flow of it and allowed you to concentrate more on the main theme – that there was a (comical, friendly) process to be followed when shopping at that particular market!

Writing Challenge for June / July

Elections (again..) and festivals – as we’re moving into July..

'FIREFLIES AT DAWN'

Saturday 29th June

at The Warehouse in Holbeck

Show starts at 7.30pm

Fireflies at Dawn invites you to embark on a journey of discovery, where emotions take flight and senses awaken to the soft rustle of wings.

This enchanting dance theatre piece weaves together the threads of inclusivity, and self-expression, exploring the richness of our shared humanity and the strength found in our search for connection. This delicate interplay of sound and motion invites you to discover the lived experience of blind and visually impaired people and to pay attention to how we connect to our senses, ourselves and others. Witness the power of vulnerability in this emotional and sensory show.

Co-created and performed by visually impaired and sighted dancers, Fireflies at Dawn continues the companies investigation into how and why we move and dance. The show uses embedded audio description, sounds, lights and touch as well as innovative new wearable technology, echome -  to enhance movement perceptions for both performers and audiences alike.

This is a pay what you decide performance.

'Tales From A Hostile Environment'

Sunday 30th June

at The Warehouse in Holbeck

Show starts at 2.30pm

Members of the Actors for Human Rights network are mobilising across England and will present staged readings of this script in several locations during the week before election day, including here in Leeds.

A general election looms, which inevitably means a renewed demonisation of immigrants living here.
When ice&fire was founded in 2003, the rhetoric was similar and the environment for many immigrants was hostile in practice if not in name. Since then, policies and laws affecting immigrants and those who love them, work with them, and rely upon them have become increasingly punitive.
The majority of immigrants living here do not have the right to vote in this election. With this new script, a curated collection of first-hand testimonies we have collected over 20 years from people impacted by these policies and laws, we invite you to listen and consider these voices during this election cycle and beyond.

This is a pay what you decide performance.

The latest from the Jurassic Coast Trust team

The first edition of the Jurassic Coast Collection Newsletter has just been circulated. Subscribe here to receive updates about the palaeontological work carried out by Chris Reedman and the Jurassic Coast team.

Work is underway to create an accessible guide to the Jurassic Coast, a resource designed to empower neurodivergent individuals or those with physical or non-visible disabilities to visit the Jurassic Coast. Contact Lauren to get involved.

The Jurassic Coast Geo-Heritage Sustainability Study has been entered into the 2024 Dorset Business Awards. This is on the basis of its effect on how we will be able to manage the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in the future and therefore all social impact for communities, and all who interact with it.

On 6th June, Sam led a geology walk for the West Bay Discovery Centre as part of the GroundWork Gallery tour for Dorset Artweek and their Ground Beneath Our Feet exhibition. The walk included a number of artists involved in the exhibition and who are interested in the ways art can help engage people with the environment.

We have recently enjoyed engaging with lots of residents and visitors at the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival and the Bridport food festival (with thanks to Purbeck Ice Cream for kindly paying for our pitch in advance, enabling us to be at Bridport Food Festival). In the near future, JCT ambassadors will be at Seaton Natural 27-28 July, Pebblebed Heath Week during 28-July to 03-Aug, Portland Week during 19-25 Aug, and Melplash Show 22-Aug.

Upcoming Events

BOOK NOW:

July in the Kent Downs

Read on for our latest updates and a peek at what's happening in the Kent Downs National Landscape over the coming weeks.

This month, we're celebrating the unveiling of a new hilltop artwork in Lullingstone Country Park, revealing why the Downs are so popular for viticulture, and getting excited about the arrival of lavender season!

Vineyards of the Kent Downs

The gentle slopes and chalky soils of the North Downs make the Kent Downs National Landscape an ideal region for growing grapes and producing world-class wines.

Often referred to as the Garden of England, our region offers a perfect blend of soil and climate that has made it a burgeoning hub for viticulture.  In fact, the terroir – the combination of soil, topography and microclimate – is remarkably like the Champagne region of France, which is why the sparkling wines from Kent’s vineyards rival the finest offerings from across the Channel.

With many vineyards set against the Kent Downs to explore, our latest blog will be your guide to discovering the top winery experiences on offer. Cheers! 🥂

Lavender season is here!

Lavender season at Castle Farm in the Darent Valley is a must-see. The landscape turns a vibrant purple and the air is filled with a calming scent.

You can wander through the rows, take guided tours, bring your own picnic, or simply enjoy the stunning views.

Plus, the farm offers a variety of lavender products, from essential oils to culinary treats, so you can bring a piece of the experience home.

Don't miss out on this unique and beautiful time of year in the Kent countryside!

Unveiling 'Ripple: A Sculpture in the Landscape' by James Tunnard

The new permanent artwork, 'Ripple', was revealed at a special event in Lullingstone Country Park on 21st June. The opening celebration brought together local school children, plus over 40 attendees including poets and others who were part of the project.

‘Ripple’ is in the Orchid Bank wildflower meadow and features a seating area for visitors to take in the beautiful views across the valley.

This piece, inspired by the park, the local countryside, and artist Samuel Palmer, was commissioned by the Darent Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme.

GeoAdventures is a nine-month festival celebrating the rich geodiversity of our Cross-Channel Global Geopark!

Running from May 2024 to February 2025, you’re invited to delve into the heart of geodiversity, exploring how the earth, sea, and landscape have shaped our world and the communities within it today.

Mapping the Heritage Ponds of the Kent Downs

Get Involved

We’re seeking intrepid volunteer citizen scientists to map the hidden ponds that dot the Kent Downs landscape.

Your invaluable contribution will pave the way for future restoration efforts, breathing new life into these overlooked aquatic havens.

All you need is a computer, an internet connection, and a passion for conservation. This desk-based role is perfect for all abilities.

The Kent Downs Heritage Ponds project is funded through Defra’s Farming In Protected Landscapes programme and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thank you to National Lottery players for making this project possible.

Keep up to date with the
North Downs Way

Are you a keen walker, or are you located on, or close to, the North Downs Way National Trail? Well good news! There is now a dedicated newsletter where you can keep up to date with the latest news, inspiration and events from along the trail.

Places to visit in the Kent Downs
Looking for inspiration for your next adventure in our National Landscape? Look no further! Here's our top spot to visit this July:

Farthing Common

Farthing Common, perched at 185 metres above sea level, is one of the highest points in the Kent Downs. On a clear day, it offers breathtaking views across Kent, with glimpses of the cliffs at Fairlight in Sussex and even the distant South Downs.

This historic site lies at the junction of an ancient trackway winding through the Kent countryside, connecting to the Elham Valley and the old Roman road, now Stone Street, which once stretched from Portus Lemanis in West Hythe to Canterbury.

You can explore the area by walking or cycling, with the North Downs Way National Trail passing through and offering scenic routes to nearby Wye and Folkestone. For those who prefer a leisurely visit, there's a free car park that’s perfect for enjoying a stunning sunset.
