The NYU School of Professional Studies Publishing Programs invite you to a literary evening with James McBride, author of the 2023 Barnes & Noble Book of the Year, in conversation with Pamela Newkirk, Author and NYU Professor of Journalism.

The program begins at 6:30 PM with an introduction by Allison Dobson, President, The Penguin Publishing Group, Penguin Random House.

Join fellow attendees after the talk for a reception with light refreshments. This event is open to the NYU community and a limited number of our publishing industry guests.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR...

 

James McBride

James McBride is an award-winning author, musician, journalist and screenwriter. His internationally acclaimed bestselling novel, The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, was named the 2023 Barnes & Noble Book of the Year. His landmark memoir, The Color of Water, published in 1996, is considered an American classic and read in schools and universities across the United States. His celebrated works include the New York Times-bestselling Oprah’s Book Club selection, Deacon King Kong, and The Good Lord Bird, winner of the 2013 National Book Award for fiction.

In 2015, James was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2016, he was awarded the National Humanities Award by President Barack Obama. James is proud to be a distinguished writer in residence at New York University.

 

ABOUT THE MODERATOR...

 

Pamela Newkirk

Pamela Newkirk is a journalist, professor, author, and multi-disciplinary scholar whose work examines contemporary and historical depictions of African Americans in popular culture. Her latest book is Diversity, Inc. - The Failed Promise of a Billion-Dollar Business. Her previous book, Spectacle: The Astonishing Life of Ota Benga, was awarded the 2016 NAACP Image Award and was selected as a New York Times Editor’s Choice. A member of the journalism faculty at New York University, Pamela holds journalism degrees from Columbia and New York Universities, and a PhD from Columbia University. She was recently inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
