Read Easy Leeds

Hamdi and SueWe’ve been working in partnership with Read Easy Leeds, a charity offering 1-2-1 free literacy support for adults. In November, Read Easy held a second Graduation Day at Leeds Central Library, where 15 readers achieved certificates.

The charity is also recruiting volunteer coaches, so please spread the word or learn more on their website.

Volunteering for Leeds Libraries

We love our volunteers and the enthusiasm they bring as Digital Champions mentoring Code clubs, Heritage volunteers researching, indexing and transcribing historical texts, and our Reading Friends connecting people with reading in their homes and communities.

In their own words here's how much our library volunteers have enjoyed working with the service and our customers:

"Enjoying visiting the ladies I support through the Reading Friends Scheme"

Reading Friends volunteer

"I'm enjoying it. It is helpful that it's completely flexible when I come in and that I only do the odd hour or two, but it still feels useful. Thanks for the opportunity."

Heritage volunteer

"I like to help children about scratching and coding"

LGBT+ History Month Books

CarolCarol by Patricia Highsmith

Famously the first Lesbian Romance novel not to end in tragedy and death, Carol Aird first meets Therese Belivet at a department store, seeking a Christmas present for her daughter. After Therese returns Carol’s lost gloves the meet-cute continues and both of their worlds will never be the same. Now a major motion picture starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

For more on Patricia Highsmith and the creation of Carol, check out our Secret Library Blog! Surviving Censorship: Patricia Highsmith – The Secret Library | Leeds Libraries Heritage Blog (secretlibraryleeds.net)

Before We Were TransBefore We Were Trans by Kit Heyam

The stories we know of trans lives tend to be recent, binary, stereotyped, medicalised and white. Before We Were Trans is a new and different story of gender, that seeks not to be comprehensive or definitive, but - by blending culture, feminism and politics - to widen the scope of what we think of as trans history by telling the stories of people across the globe whose experience of gender has been transgressive, or not characterised by stability or binary categories.

Black Car BurningBlack Car Burning by Helen Mort

Mort is a Sheffield-born poet of some renown, whose debut novel contains much of her descriptive metaphor and love of language. It’s also incredibly ambitious and personal. Set in during the second inquest into the deaths at the Hillsborough disaster, Alexa is a community support officer, struggling with the loss of trust between the people and the police. Mistrust between Sheffield residents of different backgrounds and ethnicities. And the straining bonds between Alexa, her partner Caron the climber and their polyamorous relationship. Can time truly heal all wounds?

My Brother's HusbandMy Brother's Husband by Gengoroh Tagame

The famed Japanese Writer/Artist’s critically acclaimed manga, about the unlikely meeting between single-father Yaichi, and his estranged twin brother’s widower, Mike. The series covers differences between Canadian and Japanese approaches to LGBTQ+ existence and bigotry, Yaichi re-navigating how fairly he thought he treated his brother, and how to broach any of this with his young daughter Kana – who's just naively excited to meet her uncle.

The Hayward Gallery's new exhibition is here and it’s already making a sculptural splash. Described as 'invigorating' and 'joyful' by the Telegraph, the exhibition spans over 60 years of contemporary sculpture, featuring works by 21 international artists.

Encounter sculptural forms that seem to ooze, undulate, blossom, erupt and sprawl in the gallery space, highlighting the way in which artists draw on familiar experiences of movement, flux and organic growth.

And don't forget – under-30s and Lambeth residents can get tickets for just £8 (available Tuesday to Friday, and after 5pm on Saturday).*

Work updates from the JCT Team

The Jurassic Coast Trust team are always busy, working to protect and conserve the UNESCO World Heritage Site. We would like to provide regular updates on our ongoing work. Here is the latest:

- We were extremely saddened to hear of the passing of our patron, Professor Denys Brunsden. Read more about this in our recent blog post

- We have had the final draft of the Jurassic Coast Museum feasibility Report. The team are now reflecting on the next steps and will be communicating more on this soon.

- We are excited to announce the appointment of our new team member, Saskia, who will take on the role of Protected Site Strategy Project Officer. Watch this space for an introduction to Saskia and the project.

- We are in the final stages of embedding the Jurassic Coast Collection database and look forward to sharing this in due course.

- We are putting together an online talk series for JCT members all about the Jurassic Coast, geology, palaeontology and World Heritage.

- We are about to start a full evaluation of our website, including user research. If you have any feedback or would like to be involved, please contact Lauren.

- Are you visiting the Jurassic Coast this half term? Check our website and social media for things to do.

5 reasons to visit the Jurassic Coast this year

Of course we’re biased and think you should spend all your time exploring the Jurassic Coast, but if you’re sat at home wondering what adventures to plan for 2024, here are some of our top reasons why you should visit the Jurassic Coast this year!

Spotlight on Portland

The Isle of Portland is the Jurassic Coast’s most southerly point and is joined to the mainland by just a thin strip at the southern end of the sweeping arc of Chesil Beach. Its isolated location and beautiful scenery make it a real explorer’s island, while the comparatively mild climate enables a wide variety of flora and fauna to thrive.

The best way to explore this fascinating island is on foot. The South West Coast Path loops around the island, and there is an excellent network of inland pathways giving superb access to a wide variety of features. The buildings on the island are rich in history, while Portland Bill at the southern tip features no fewer than three lighthouse structures. Only one of these remains operational and includes a recently refurbished visitor centre.

Many parts of the island, including the whole of the coastline, are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Chesil Beach and the Fleet lagoon are of international conservation importance and are home to nearly 300 species of bird, over 30 species of butterfly and 720 species of moth.

Stay In Dorset offers over 200 holiday cottages, including over 130 within easy reach of the Jurassic Coast. Among the top holiday cottage destinations are Lyme Regis, Charmouth, West Bay, West Lulworth and Swanage. You'll find fabulous beaches, dramatic cliffs, coastal walks and millions of years of history all just waiting to be explored. Find out more.

We are currently looking for volunteers and ambassadors who can support us in various fundraising and public engagement activities throughout the year. We are lucky to have a fantastic team of volunteers and ambassadors who generously give their time and effort to assist us in a broad range of activities and if you are interested in donating your time then please click here.
