Raging Bull, The Godfather & the
opera that invented the mafia...
Get
ready for a rollercoaster of emotion...
Did
you know that the final 45 minutes of The
Godfather Part III are based on the
opera Cavalleria
rusticana? The
tragic final scene
– one of the most iconic in the history
of cinema – is accompanied by the
devilishly catchy tune: Intermezzo,
and is certain to send a shiver down
even the hardest of spines. And, this
isn't the only film you'll recognise...
the theme tune from Robert De Niro's
classic Raging Bull... yep,
that's in this opera too!
Love
film? Then Cavalleria
rusticana and Aleko
is the opera for you. Two short punchy
tales, each just an hour long, packed
with passion, obsession, jealousy, and
revenge. Opening THIS THURSDAY
at Leeds Grand Theatre.

Packs an emotional punch...
1. Passion
Passion blazes in both
halves of this double bill. Cavalleria
rusticana's fiery love triangle
builds to an explosive climax, while Aleko smolders
with the fiery conflict of love and
loyalty...
2. Obsession
Opera loves obsession! In
both operas, the central character goes
off the rails as a result of obsessing
over a girl whom (spoiler!)
they later lose to another.
3. Jealousy
In the storm of obsession,
jealousy reigns supreme. In both
productions, singer Robert
Hayward, morphing from
Turridù to Aleko, battles the agonising
pain of jealousy and plunges into a
whirlwind of passion and despair.
4. Revenge
In the first half, honor
demands bloodshed, but in a 1990s
Bohemian society will revenge be Aleko's
undoing?
5. Tragedy
Tragedy is opera's
strength, with huge voices and orchestral
oomph at its command. While the action
keeps you riveted, it's the music that
sends shivers down your spine.
All productions will
feature English titles and selected
performances of Cavalleria rusticana
and Aleko will be audio
described.
