Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 5 February with Jack, Jake, Karen, Kathy, Michelle, Molly and Paul in attendance, apologies having been received from Barbara and Reuben. Members welcomed new member Jake to the group and introduced themselves and their writing journey. Jake has been writing a fantasy novel and is 60k words in.
The minutes from the last meeting were passed.
WIP updates: Karen has written a short story which she brought along for feedback before entering it into the Writers & Artists short story competition. Kathy has been working on her Book Puppet WIP. Jack has made a list of names/regal titles for his characters and been working out ways to move the story forward rather than just things happening. Molly has been taking part in Writing for Self Expression at Calderdale and Kirklees Recovery College and written a poem having relistened and rewatched the Beth Kempton course which she recommends along with The Process of Poetry book. She has also looked up some poetry competitions. Michelle attended the Yaffle event on Wednesday evening which she recommends and she is now going to concentrate on poetry. Paul has been working on his WIP The Pervert in the Hills (title inspired by the poem by Irish poet laureate John Murgatroyd, who Ian Bailey, the murderer, worked for as a gardener) and discussed the background for those members who did not know. A documentary on the case entitled Murder at the Cottage can be found on streaming channels.
CW comps/workshops/events: FREE to enter Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest (see Karen’s blog 21/1/24). New Writing North Awards close 22 February. FREE to enter the Script Lab 2024 screenplay contest, deadline 29 February (see Karen's upcoming blog post for details).
Writing plans: Karen will be editing her sequel to her first novel. Paul will be finishing his WIP. Michelle will be working on poetry which is fresh in her mind. Molly will be writing for self expression on Wednesday, taking part in a poetry workshop which takes place once a week on a Wednesday by Nabeela Ahmed which is £5 to join and carrying on with the Beth Kempton course. Jake will be working on his WIP aiming for 500 words per session. Jack will be pursuing the tournament lead up in his WIP to cement connections to the characters. Kathy will be working on her WIP, Book Puppet.
Feedback sessions: Karen shared her short story and feedback included plot direction and taking out the characters internal dialogue 'how stalker-y' as it is not needed.
Writing challenge: FEBRUARY Love/Valentine's or the opposite.
Date of next meeting: Monday 19 February 2024 at 5.30pm at Cleckheaton Library, then Monday 4 March at 5.30pm at Cleckheaton Library. New members always welcome.
