We're looking forward to Heritage Open Day this Saturday, 16th September from 10 am. Come and join us - the displays will be up and the biscuits will be waiting!

National Heritage Open Days: 16 September, 17 September Holy Spirit Church, Heckmondwike

National Heritage Open Days, September 2023

(incidentally, this is the church where I got married)

Our Lady of Unfailing Help & St. Paul of the Cross Church, Cleckheaton Dewsbury Road, Cleckheaton BD19 5DL

SAT 10TH 10 AM – 3 PM

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Leeds’ first permanent church here was built after World War Two. The origins of the Parish lay in Cleckheaton’s response to providing a place of worship for the Belgian refugees who arrived in the area in the early days of the Great War. After various temporary arrangements, the present, modest red-brick church was built in 1952/53 to the design of J.H. Langtry-Langton. It is of a simplified Romanesque style. https://stpaulscleckheaton. wordpress.com/

Holy Spirit Church, Heckmondwike Bath Road, Heckmondwike WF16 9EA

FRI 16TH 12 PM – 4 PM

SAT 17TH 10 AM – 2 PM

Holy Spirit Church, completed in 1915 in a ByzantineRomanesque style, brought a blend of the old Christian churches found in the Mediterranean to the town. Enhanced by stained glass crafted by Margaret Agnes Rope, it boasts four Swedish blue marble columns supporting its green dome. The Roman Catholic church’s founding father, Monsignor John O’Connor, inspired G.K.Chesterton’s Father Brown, while a later Parish Priest, Fr. Patrick Roche, counted members of American Ryder Cup teams (to whom he was Chaplain), film stars and American astronauts among his friends.

Summer Reading Challenge

Reading for pleasure is more important to children’s successes than education or social class. The Summer Reading Challenge gets three quarters of a million children into libraries to keep up their reading skills and confidence during the long holidays

The challenge concludes on 23rd September, so you've still got plenty of time to join the challenge at your local Kirklees library. If you've already joined, come and tell us about the fabulous books you've been reading and pick up your special collector folder and smelly stickers. We know your teachers love to see those reading certificates and medals when you go back to school in September!

Find out more on the official Summer Reading Challenge website

National Libraries Week

A book in flowers

2nd - 8th October 2023

This year Libraries Week becomes Green Libraries Week! Between the 2nd and 8th October, we are celebrating the work going on in libraries across the UK focused on sustainability and climate change.

We all know the importance of doing our part to tackle climate change, we believe libraries are a brilliant space and resource to get the younger generation clued up on the subject matter. Keep an eye on our social media platforms to see all the exciting activities taking place at our libraries and how you can get involved.

Find out more about libraries week: https://librariesweek.org.uk/

The Lost Words Library Garden Trails

Green libraries

Keep your eyes peeled for our special “The Lost Words” library garden trails popping up in selected libraries across Kirklees during Green Libraries Week (2nd-8th October). Just come in, pick up a collecting sheet and try to find Jackie Morris’ beautiful illustrations from the book. It’s a great family activity to enjoy on your library visit. Don’t forget to have a look at “The Lost Words” afterwards to find Robert Mcfarlane’s Spell songs to go alongside the beautiful images, why not read them aloud as you walk around the garden?

Participating library locations will be shared on our social media platforms.

Mikron Theatre: A Force To Be Reckoned With

Mikron Theatre: A Force To Be Reckoned With

Thursday 28th September, 7:00PM, Cleckheaton Library.

With handbag, whistle and a key to the Police Box, WPC Iris Armstrong is ready for whatever the mean streets of a 1950s market town throws at her.
Fresh from police training school, she prepares for her first day on the beat. The reality is very different. Stuck at the station, she soon finds her main jobs are typing and making brews.
Iris joins forces with fellow WPC Ruby Weston. They’re an unlikely partnership. A two-girl department, called to any case involving women and children, from troublesome teens to fraudulent fortune tellers.
What starts as ‘women’s work’ soon becomes a specialist role.
Iris finds she’s earning her place in a historic force to be reckoned with. Along the way, she discovers the Edwardian volunteers who came before her, a lineage of Suffragettes-turned-moral enforcers and  the secrets that the police box hides.
In this arresting tale of law and order, join forces with Mikron as we investigate pioneering women in the police.

Mikron Theatre: Twitchers - Birds, birders and the RSPB

Mikron theatre

Springwatch is coming to RSPB Shrikewing nature reserve.
Jess, the Reserve Warden, can’t wait to show the world this special place, with its amazing wildlife and incredible birds.
But Shrikewing is not an island.
From pollution and vandals to an overzealous mayor, Jess is starting to feel that protecting birds from human interference might just be impossible.
As we meet raucous rooks, booming bitterns and plenty of tits we realise the birds of Shrikewing are its real stars.
Can Jess take inspiration from the RSPB’s tenacious female founders and draw on its history of campaigning to save them? Can she find her own voice to raise a rallying cry for nature?
Nest(le) down with Mikron in this flight through birdwatching history, feathered with birdsong and laughter. You’ll be giggling from heron in and you won’t ‘egret coming!

Embrace the Magic of Ireland

Hi,

From selkies to towering giants, hags to vampiric creatures, Irish folklore reads like an epic fantasy novel. Fairies, leprechauns, and many other magical beasts and gods populate these legends.

Irish mythology is a rich and varied tapestry of intertwined stories and tales that tell us of these beings. Many of these stories are tied to specific places, like Finn McCool of the Giant’s Causeway and the Hag of Beara of the Beara Peninsula.

Dive into the alluring world of Irish mythology and legends with our dedicated folklore blog section. Who will you meet on your trip to Ireland?
