Cleckheaton Writer's Group minutes, meeting 4 September 2023

Cleckheaton Writer's Group (CWG) met on Monday night at Cleckheaton Library with Cassie, Gemma, Karen and Michelle in attendance, Alice, Kathy and Reuben having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the last meeting were passed.

WIP updates: Karen has received the feedback on her 3 submission packages for CE, TP and BFY, entered a short story into the Val Wood Prize, entered TP into the Simon an Schuster/BLF Yorkshire Emerging Writers mentorship and entered her picture book MGIAV and her YA fantasy HL into the Searchlight Awards. Michelle has written a short story. Gemma has been editing, had a Zoom mentorship session with Louise Jenson and has written a new chapter for her WIP after reviewing a sub plot with Liv and Mary and their relationship.

CW comps/workshops/events: Can't see the wood for the Trees Creative Writing workshop with Ali Taft Tuesday 12 September 2-4 Leeds Beckett University and Birmingham Literature Festival in October (Karen has the brochure should members want more details).

Writing plans: Karen will be editing and hopefully writing some new chapters. Gemma will be editing. Michelle will be working on her Ryan WIP. Cassie will be writing a short story.

Feedback sessions: Michelle shared her spooky short story she considered entering into a 500 word competition. It was very visual, members felt like they were there, and it was a lovely departure from her normal style. Michelle was encouraged by members to lengthen the story and add more sensory details. Karen shared her feedback which led to a discussion. Gemma shared the new chapter she had written for her WIP and members thought it worked well to establish the relationship dynamics between the surrogate mum and daughter. Gemma was pleased the scene communicated the things she had wanted.

Writing challenge: The September theme is Education.

Next meeting: Monday 18 September 5.30pm at Cleckheaton Library.
