Libraries in
Leeds festival
The first "Libraries in Leeds" festival is
taking place 4-9 September to showcase and celebrate the wide
network of libraries across the city.
There are talks, discussions, backstage experiences.
Plus we're hosting a day of free family-friendly activities on Saturday
9 September at Leeds Central Library! Find full

Public Libraries: Past, Present
and Future
Tuesday 5 September, 6.30pm. The Leeds Library
Find out about the history of public libraries, hear
about their Universal Offers and have your say about their future
role in this illuminating discussion with Sue Williamson MBE,
former Director of Libraries at Arts Council England and Vice-Chair
of CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library & Information
Professionals) and Professor Jon Mee, author of Networks of Improvement.

Finding Information About
Health
Wednesday 6 September 12.30pm, Thackray Museum of
Medicine
Many people struggle to find and understand
information relating to their health. This talk hosted by Sue Lacey
Bryant, Chief Knowledge Officer for NHS Knowledge and Library
Services, will show you where to find good health information and
highlight the dangers of misinformation. It will also describe the
work of the health libraries and how they support everyone in

This autumn we are delighted to be hosting an evening of
special events to mark National
Poetry Day on Thursday 5 October in the Tiled
Hall Café at Leeds Central Library.
The evening begins with The Poetry Panel - a
discussion about contemporary poetry publishing, including tips for
poets on editing and submitting their work.
This is followed by The Poets - readings from
four fantastic poets who showcase the depth and diversity of voices
and publishers currently working in the scene.

We are also hosting two National Poetry Day children's
workshops as part of the programme:
Matt Goodfellow, Monday 2 October, 3.45 at Garforth
Library & Community Hub
Award-winning children’s poet Matt Goodfellow spends
his time writing and touring the UK and beyond – visiting schools,
libraries and festivals to deliver high-energy, inspirational
poetry performances and workshops. Before embarking on his poetry
career, Matt spent over 10 years as a primary school teacher.

Simone Yasmin, Wednesday 4 October, 4.00 at Holt Park
Library & Community Hub
Leeds-based poet and artivist Simone Yasmin’s written
and vocal work raises awareness for issues many choose to ignore.
She is a versatile writer who has performed on many platforms,
including a spoken-word piece on Trafalgar Square and
groundbreaking textual art in The Tetley.

What does
home mean to you?
Your home, your Yorkshire, your back yard, your front
door... Wherever home is, tell us about it in a poem written on one
of our Poetry Postcards. Your poem could be read out on BBC Radio
Leeds and hung in a display at Leeds Central Library during BBC
Contains Strong Language - a festival of poetry and performance
taking place 21-24 September. It doesn't matter if you've never
written a poem before or if you love coming up with verses all the
time - Poetry Postcards are for everyone. If you choose to write
your name and contact details on the card, you may be able to read
it out on BBC Radio Leeds yourself!
Poetry Postcard boxes are available at the following libraries &
community hubs:
Chapel Allerton, Dewsbury Road, Halton, Headingley,
Horsforth, Leeds Central Library, Moor Allerton, Morley, Otley and
Wetherby.

About Contains Strong Language: The UK’s biggest poetry and performance festival
comes to Leeds from 21-24 September. Taking place over 4 days in
multiple venues across the city, leading poets and world-class
spoken word artists will take to the stage alongside brand new
voices. You can be in the audience for some of the BBC’s biggest
radio shows, take part in poetry workshops and listen to readings
from over 30 poets. All events are free. Find the full programme at BBC

This September we are hosting a Death Café at Hunslet Library &
Community Hub with Leeds Bereavement Forum. No
booking required, just drop in. Find more info here
Curious about what happens at a Death Café? Simply
put, people (often strangers) gather to eat cake, drink tea and
discuss death. It's an international movement dedicated to
encouraging discussion about death and dying in a relaxed
environment, and a welcome opportunity to ask those awkward
questions you've always wanted to ask.

Code Clubs
and eSports relaunch
Leeds Central Library, Saturday 9 September, 10am

Start your coding
adventure with Leeds Libraries! Discover our
easy-to-follow projects which will help you to learn a variety of
coding languages by making games, robots, animations, and websites
in a supportive environment.
We run Code Clubs for young people at Leeds Central
Library and at the following libraries & community hubs: Compton
Centre (Harehills), Hunslet, Garforth, Bramley, and Seacroft.
Join one of our Nintendo Switch
eSports groups and challenge your
friends! Splatter each other in Splatoon, smash each other in Super
Smash Bros, see who's the best Mario Kart racer. All in a friendly
manner, of course…
Our groups run at Leeds Central Library and at the
following libraries & community hubs: Compton Centre, Seacroft,
Otley and Garforth. For ages 12-16.

Leeds Digital Festival 18-29 September
As part of Leeds Digital Festival, we are speaking
about our SIM
gifting offer which supports local communities to
get online and stay connected through the Good Things Foundation's
National Databank Scheme. Join us at a webinar hosted by 100%
Digital Leeds on Monday 18 September at 1pm. Book here.
On Thursday 28 September 2-4pm, we are inviting
community organisations who would like to embed SIM gifting as part
of their digital inclusion offer to the Sanderson Room at Leeds
Central Library. This in-person event will provide tips about best
practices for SIM gifting and promote shared learning. Book here

Leeds 2023 -
Nest
"It's 2050 and climate change is shaking the
natural world. Now the bird watchers can no longer watch, Skyler's
home will never be the same again..."
LEEDS 2023's new epic outdoor theatre performance,
'Nest' is just a couple of weeks away. Join them in September at
the stunning RSPB St Aidan's Nature Park for a once-in-a-generation
show, performed by over 100 young people, with a powerful story
about climate change at its centre.
