Freedom Studios newsletter

With details of arts opportunities in Bradford:

Freedom Studios Newsletter

We’ve been on a little hiatus over the summer but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy behind the scenes. Graeme Thompson was appointed as new Creative Lead in April and has been working with the team to shape a new direction for the company and what the projects and opportunities will look like going forward.

So, expect full details about Bradford Voices and all the opportunities coming soon, but first up some words from our new Creative Lead and two announcements about opportunities for young people running this autumn! Both are free to attend, so please spread the word to the young people you know...

Some words from Graeme…

‘There has been a lot of change at Freedom Studios in recent times - coming out of the Arts Council National Portfolio of regular funding has been the biggest and had the greatest impact. It’s made us really reflect on what Freedom Studios offers and how it serves the artistic and the creative community of Bradford. So, we are going back to our roots as a developer of new writing talent with the creation of stories from local people at our heart. Autumn 2023 will see us launch a new project called Bradford Voices. Bradford Voices will be a chance to hear some of the unheard stories from Bradford and from the voices of Bradford itself. It will be about working with early career writers, expanding our young people’s programmes and working in the community. We are really excited about getting going with it so keep an eye out for the full details which will be coming soon.’

Sessions running fortnightly from 25 October, at Kala Sangam Ars Centre. Free to attend, but please register your interest here, if you would like to join us.

FS Recommends: Frankenstein

The story of Frankenstein with a twist! A contemporary adaptation set in Yorkshire by Freedom Studios’ Street Voices 5 writer Chris O’Connor inspired by the rise of modern technology.

The eccentric self-taught technologist Dr Frankenstein has become the latest viral sensation and a laughing stock throughout Yorkshire. Driven by ambition and armed with the latest tools in artificial intelligence, they’ve been creating a new life form. One night, with a fierce thunderstorm outside, the experiment succeeds. The life form awakens and is released onto the streets of Huddersfield…

“We are on the lookout for International and West Yorkshire (UK) based, Global Majority* artists to take part in Broadening Horizons, a brand-new artist development programme led by us at LEEDS 2023 and supported by The British Council.

We are seeking applications from artists who would benefit from a facilitated programme of peer-to-peer exchange, mentorship, networking and research. Applications should identify why international collaboration is key to your practice and / or development.

Successful applicants will take part in a series of peer exchanges and facilitated workshops between October and December 2023 and will receive £250 towards their professional development, and £750 towards research into the international development of their practice”
