Birmingham Literature Festival 5-8 October 2023

Detailing festival events and volunteer opportunities:

What does "home" mean to you?

Birmingham Literature Festival

5-8 October 2023

Hello,

The word "home" means something different to all of us. For some, it's our current place of dwelling. Maybe it's the village, town or city you grew up in. Maybe it's your parents' home, possibly long since no longer theirs. And maybe, for some of us, it's a country, a land, a people, far away - and which we may not be able to return to as much as we'd like.

We've programmed several events during this year's Birmingham Literature Festival which talk about "home" and what it can mean. This includes recent migrants; second-and-third-generation immigrants to the UK, and people who were sent far from home in a previous era.

In all cases, "home" remains an important, emotional tie, brought to life by their and their descendants' writing.

Some of the events are highlighted below, or you can browse the full programme on our website.

See you very soon,

Volunteer With Us!

Hello from Writing West Midlands!

At the start of this month we launched the programme for this year’s Birmingham Literature Festival 2023, taking place from Thursday 5th October to Sunday 8th October 2023. Over 4 days, we'll be bringing you great writers and interesting conversations ranging from first love, our relationship with our bodies, the impact of climate change on the natural landscape and everything in between!

This year, our line-up includes Sir Lenny Henry, Liz Berry, Gary Younge, Laura Bates, Stuart Maconie and Satish Kumar to name just a few.

Tickets are now on sale. You can add yourself to our mailing list, to know more about events and speakers this year. There is truly something for everyone.

The Festival couldn't happen without the wonderful volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to help deliver our fantastic festival. Our volunteers are a vital part of our team, and we’re enormously grateful to all who join us to run a festival with enthusiasm and good humour.

We are now recruiting volunteers for this year’s festival.

As a volunteer, you will be working alongside staff to make the festival happen. The role is varied, and below is a list of the main jobs you can expect:

·     Leafleting

·     Greeting and welcoming audiences and writers

·     Distributing partner's marketing material

·      Managing audience Q&A for events

·     Feedback forms

·     Circulating mailing lists

Past Volunteer, Nelly, Said:

"At BLF I had a warm welcome and, like everyone else, met wonderful volunteers coming together around their passion for literature. The job was mostly welcoming people, giving directions, and say “Yes, they are really here!” about authors. One shift, I ended up kayaking with Hannah (another volunteer and talented poet)... Most of the time I sat in on things, like when Joe Lycett and Jess Philips chatted away in Town Hall. And there are always snacks!"
