Still from The Young Girls of Rochefort

THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT [35MM] (U)

Fri 10.15

A vibrant homage to classic musicals from Jacques Demy. Filmed in Franscope, this film is a delight of sherbet colouring and intoxicating euphoria as it blends French New Wave with Classic Hollywood flair, with both La La Land (2016) and Barbie (2023) having recently drawn inspiration from the musical.

Eight travellers are trapped together with Quentin Tarantino’s signature blend of action, humour and over-the-top violence.

Shot on 65mm in Ultra Panavision 70 for the first time in nearly 50 years and given a roadshow-style limited release, the additional efforts to capture and present this film as a classic cinema experience find it right at home in Pictureville Cinema.

A still from Roma of a family hugging on the beach

ROMA [70MM] (15)

Sun 19.30

This is a rare theatrical screening of a modern classic, the type of film that makes us hopeful for the future of digital capture and analogue projection.

Hello autumn!

Read on to hear our latest updates and for a peek at what's happening in the Kent Downs AONB over the next month.

This October, we're on the lookout for for the invasive Asian hornet, planning our leaf-peeping walks in the woods, getting involved in a new Big Chalk project, and celebrating the Geodiversity of the Kent Downs.

Asian hornets spotted in Kent

Asian hornets pose a significant threat to our native pollinators, including the European honey bee and many of our solitary bee species. Around 42 Asian hornet nests have been found in the UK so far this year, most of these in Kent.

These non-native, invasive predators can be identified by their black body and yellow legs. They are smaller than our harmless, native European hornet. Asian hornets are active from April to November.

It’s important that nests and sightings are reported. If you think you’ve seen an Asian hornet, please report it using the Asian Hornet Watch app, or through nonnativespecies.org.

Autumn walks in the Kent Downs

Grab your coat, step outside, and experience the wind on your face as you walk in the footsteps of pilgrims, watch flocks of migratory birds, and admire the kaleidoscopic colours of the Downs this autumn.

Geodiversity in the Kent Downs

On 6th October 2023, we're celebrating
International Geodiversity Day

But what is geodiversity?

It's the non-living parts of our ecosystem, such as rocks, minerals, soils, mountains, rivers and lakes. Just like biodiversity, geodiversity has its own intrinsic value worthy of protection.

In this time of climate crisis, our awareness of geodiversity has never been more important: the role it plays in regulating river flows, filtering polluted surface water, formation of soils, understanding of past changes to our climate, and a vital social and natural environment for human wellbeing.

Our new GeoDiversity Project, launched in July 2023 and supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, aims to reveal the importance of geology in the formation of our landscape, and how it has affected the lives of today’s communities.

This project is the next chapter on our journey to secure UNESCO Global Geopark status as a Cross-Channel Geopark.

Introducing the Big Chalk project

Big Chalk is an ambitious project that aims to restore a mosaic of habitats across the chalk and limestone landscapes of southern England.

Due to their underlying geology and history, these landscapes are particularly species rich, so together, they provide the greatest opportunity for wildlife to thrive and adapt to climate change offered by the English landscape.

But Big Chalk is not just for nature; it's for people too. Thriving calcareous landscapes can deliver lots of benefits for people, including sustainable jobs and products, carbon sequestration, water supply, flood management and soil stabilisation. Restored species-rich landscapes can also better support our health and wellbeing, giving us access to beautiful open spaces.

The project area is enormous covering 24,867 sq. km, and includes the entire Kent Downs AONB. We're thrilled to be involved in the Big Chalk project and will keep you updated as the programme gets underway.

Places to visit in the Kent Downs

Looking for inspiration for your next adventure in the Downs? Look no further! Here's our top spot to visit this October...

Coldrum Stones

Coldrum Stones is a group of Neolithic monuments found in the lower valley of the River Medway. Set on a small hill, in the shadow of the North Downs near Trottiscliffe, it’s one of the best surviving examples of the 'Medway Megaliths'. The 'Medway Megaliths' are a cluster of seven Neolithic sites that reveal the Medway valley was home to a pioneering community of early farmers.

It dates from around 6,000 years ago to the Neolithic or New Stone Age, when our ancestors evolved burial practices to dispose of and honour the dead. This ancient site is more than a thousand years older than Stonehenge! Archaeologists (and treasure hunters) have uncovered the bones and skulls of at least 20 people here, including members of the same family.

There is a small car park off Pinesfield Lane, just outside the village of Trottiscliffe. You can follow well marked signs from here, or try one of our circular routes, the Coldrum Trail and the Trosley Ramble.

Opportunities in the Kent Downs

Volunteer for the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership
WCCP is looking for volunteers to check livestock at Whinless Down and to help with autumn conservation work on the North Downs.

Job vacancy: Big Chalk Programme Lead

The National Association of AONBs is recruiting for the Big Chalk project, working to restore nature and landscapes across the South of England.
