Wharfedale & Airedale Family History Society will be on hand to help you with your family history and Keighley & District Local History Society will be exhibiting some of their photo archive collection. The award winning Men of Worth Project will also be there to help you with any enquires and showing off their work including The Morton Banks War Hospital records project. Volunteers have been working hard to transcribe and digitise the Patient Register from the First World War. The original War Hospital Register is archived at Keighley Library (BK39) and contains 13,214 names of servicemen who were treated there. It also contains the names of German prisoners of war who were being held locally and required treatment from time to time, notably from the influenza epidemic. There will also be a display on the Women of Worth with compelling documentation on the roles of local women in wartime. Come and see old photos of 1950s Keighley including school photos from David Kirkley's collection and of Gala Days gone by. Along with the amazing and interactive Heritage Open Day events the library has planned, there will also be a couple of rare artefacts on display to promote an exciting and forthcoming "Pink Floyd in Keighley" library exhibition. And if that isn't enough to tempt you at 2.00pm local footballing (legend/ star/) Mike Hellawell will be talking about his career and life growing up in 1950s Keighley. Going from playing non-league to playing top flight football for QPR, Birmingham City, Sunderland and Huddersfield Town, gaining two England Caps. Hello Karen! We hope you’re enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend! Summer might be coming to an end but we’ve still got plenty of fantastic shows to entertain you as the night’s draw in. Film (On Sale This Week) Beast (15) Idris Elba stars in this gripping thriller about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves trapped in a fearsome fight for survival as they are hunted by a rogue lion. Elba is Dr. Nate Daniels, returning to South Africa for a trip to a nature reserve with his family after the death of his wife. Setting out on a trip to heal the family, things go awry when the apex predator fixes on them as its prey. Surprisingly sophisticated, this is brilliant summer movie fare. 2nd - 8th Sept Nope (15) Brother and sister OJ and Emerald run a California horse ranch specialising in providing trained horses for Hollywood productions. When their animals start to go missing and strange occurrences take place overnight, the pair discover something sinister lurking in the skies above their home. Another original, tense and brilliantly made film from director Jordan Peele (Get Out). 2nd - 8th Sept Anaïs in Love (15) This is Anaïs Demoustier’s film, holding centre stage throughout this delightful and charming romantic comedy. Anaïs has hit 30 and on the back of a series of broken relationships. She meets Daniel who falls for her, and then she meets his partner Emilie, and Anaïs falls for her. “Filtered through the forgiving lens of first-time writer and director Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet’s peppy comic love triangle, Anaïs becomes a fascinating, intoxicating presence.” - Wendy Idea, The Guardian 3rd - 8th Sept Maisie (15) After shaking his sequins for over fifty years, David Raven, aka Maisie Trollette, is about to celebrate his 85th birthday as Britain’s oldest drag act. Creative Kirklees Newsletter 6 September 2022   Welcome to another weekly round up of all things creative! As mentioned last week, September sees the return of the Kirklees Concert Season for 2022-23 with four fabulous concerts coming up this month followed by a wonderful season of music to look forward to.  The first lunchtime organ concert of the Season takes place this coming Monday 12 September, when David Pipe, Huddersfield’s Organ Curator takes the helm of the magnificent Father Willis Organ.  This is followed by the Orchestra of Opera North’s “An American Concert in Paris’ on Thursday 15 September.  Later in the month a lunchtime chamber concert with violin and piano music takes place at Dewsbury Town Hall on Wednesday 21 September and popular organist Jonathan Scott from Bridgewater Hall in Manchester will be the Guest Organist at the concert on 26 September. September also sees the welcome return of the Onwards Festival (24 & 25 September), a multi venue live music Festival with a twist which as the name suggests, leads audiences successively through Huddersfield town centre, grassroots music venues, showcasing a carefully curated programme of live music.  Tickets are available now so do check it out.
