With thanks to Country and Townhouse, here are five things to do in London this week:
10 sustainable spring dresses, and cinematographer Sir

Happy Valentine’s Day! I
hope you’re all reading this propped up on clouds of plump silken
pillows, with the smell of bacon (sorry, vegans) wafting in the air
as your beloved prepares you breakfast in bed, leaving you to read
your VINs (very important newsletters). Failing that, perhaps you
have staff to attend to such matters. This week, I found out what a day in the life of a super
high-end staff recruitment agency might be like – useful
if you’re looking for a female butler who has to be a trained
yoga expert and flower arranger; or an astro-physics degree level
nanny. Anyone?
Have a great week.

FIVE THINGS
YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS
|
|
The London Bookshop Crawl
The London Bookshop Crawl
– which usually takes place across the capital’s bookshops – is
moving online this year, featuring a mix of virtual tours, panel
talks and quizzes. Tune in at 7.30pm today to hear from the founders
of Books For Change, an initiative to diversify bookshelves in
schools.

National Theatre At Home
If you haven’t subscribed
yet, now is a good time to check out the National Theatre’s online streaming
service. Three new filmed productions have just been
added, including Tony Kushner’s multi-award-winning Angels in
America: Parts One and Two, a two-part play set in 1980s America
in the midst of the AIDS crisis.
|
|
Pioneering Women
Works from 10 pioneering
female artists are being displayed in a new digital exhibition at Oxford
Ceramics Gallery, with a focus on the ceramic vessel form.
This includes pieces from trailblazing figures like Lucie Rie and
Bodil Manz, with vessels ranging from Japanese clay forms to domestic
pottery from Denmark.

If all this uncertainty is
playing havoc with your anxiety levels, join yoga instructor Rachel
Ackley for an evening of breathwork and sound healing on 20 February.
The 90-minute class is part of a new virtual wellness series
from Consciously Connected Travel, with all events based around
introspective travel and self-care.

WHAT’S
KEEPING MY SPIRITS UP
|
|
Puppy Love
Dog sales – and thefts –
have gone through the roof since lockdown, and we proud owners know
why. Having a dog when you’re stuck at home has brought manifold
benefits: someone who’ll listen but never talk back; unconditional
affection; a vacuum you don’t need to plug in and something to get
you out of the house despite the arctic temperatures/desire to eat
muffins and watch Call My Agent – what more could you want? Here the C&TH team pay homage to
their hounds.
|
|
The Birds and the Bees
In my drive to make our
garden more bug and bird friendly, I’ve been gaining counsel from the
Estate Manager at Chewton Glen in the New Forest, who manages over
130 acres of gardens so should know what he’s talking about. Did you
know, for example, that bees love blue flowers? Or that hoverflies
are just as important for eating aphids which attack our fruit trees?
Help is at hand…
|
|
School Run Style
I may be jumping the gun
here but with 8 March touted as the day children go back to school
(can we have lockdown there next time?), it also heralds the return
of the school run. Having dressed like Vicky Pollard for the past few
months, it might be time to up my game. Even if I can’t get my roots
highlighted, I can step out in a new spring dress from one of these
gorgeous sustainable brands.
