Why You Must Believe Your Story

Are you in love with the art in yourself or yourself in the art?

The young are taught that Hollywood and art are antithetical. The novice, therefore, wanting to be recognized as an artist, falls into the trap of writing a screenplay not for what it is, but for what it is not. They avoid closure, active characters, and causality in order to avoid the taint of commercialism. As a result, pretentiousness poisons their work.

Your story is the embodiment of your ideas and passions. When you work with one eye on your story, and one eye on the marketplace, making eccentric choices to avoid the mainstream, you produce the literary equivalent of a temper tantrum.

What is your vision?

Examine your motives for wanting to write the way you write. Every story you create says to the audience: “I believe life is like this.” Every moment must be filled with your passionate conviction or the audience smells a phony.

Difference for the sake of difference is as empty an achievement as slavishly following the commercial imperative.

Write only what you believe.

As a writer, you alone have the tools to craft the vehicle that carries us on our search for reality, our best effort to make sense out of the anarchy of existence.

"Everything's always about page-turning, right? So, if you create questions for audiences, then they'll want to know the answer."

Rewarding Your Audience

When a gap opens between expectation and result, it jolts the audience with surprise. The world has reacted in a way neither character nor audience had foreseen. This moment of shock instantly provokes curiosity as the audience wonders “Why?”

The nimble and perceptive mind of the audience finds the answers in a flash of understanding. The question “Why?” propels it back through the story, and what it’s seen so far instantly clicks into a new configuration, revealing a hidden layer of truth.

This new understanding amplifies the questions “What’s going to happen next?” and “How will this turn out?” As a writer, you must now satisfy the curiosity you’ve created.

The master storyteller leads us into expectation, makes us think we understand, then cracks open reality, creating surprise and curiosity, sending us back through the story again and again. On each trip back, we gain deeper and deeper insight.

Insight is the audience’s reward for paying attention, and a beautifully designed story delivers this pleasure scene after scene.
