Good
morning,
When do you take your holiday decorations down? Are you like my
energetic neighbor, who has his lights, garland, tree, and every
last ribbon dismantled and stored before the New Year’s hangovers
hit? Or are you a more leisurely type who is happy if it gets done
sometime before winter’s end? (If at all.) My advice: take your
time. You see, I’ve learned we still have one more “holiday” to
celebrate this season.
A 2019 online survey came up with January 19 as “Quitters Day,” the
day most people were likely to give up their New Year’s
resolutions. Most of the reasons for abandoning this attempt are
obvious—too ambitious, too many of them, and simply unrealistic.
But I have a theory of my own.
Resolutions that have the best chance of succeeding have two things
in common:
- They’re extremely
important—maybe even vital.
- They all have a
purpose behind them—they’re not just a whim or a wish.
These two factors can add
success-enhancing staying power to most any resolution. For
example, most people have “lose weight” on their list of
resolutions. That’s a wish that’s probably just this side of a
chocolate soufflé from being forgotten by Quitters Day.
What if you changed that resolution to “Lose 25 lbs. so I can fit
into my tuxedo for my daughter’s wedding in August?” Now that’s
something worth working on all year long.
A few of my own resolutions are BookBaby related, like taking
advantage of new technology to connect with authors. But another
will probably sound familiar to you: I’m going to put more energy
towards my next book. I’m not going to commit to finishing it by a
specific date. For me, it’s merely committing to making my writing
a priority.
I think this is something all authors should ask themselves right now.
Is writing a book in 2021 a priority? Ally Nathaniel, a
best-selling author and book coach, put that question
front-and-center in her BookBaby Blog post, “Is
Writing A Book A Real Priority For You?” As she writes: “Writing
a book will never amount to an emergency—that’s why you need to
make a conscious decision to put it on top of your list.”
It’s atop my list. I imagine it’s the same for millions of writers
around the world.

Congratulations!
I’ve got some news that should keep your end-of-year party going a
little longer.
Thanks to you, and you, and that guy way over there… You’ve
completely re-engineered my 2021 writing plan for these emails, my
BookBaby Blog posts—and even my personal book-writing endeavors.
Here’s how you managed it: Remember way, way back last year—i.e.,
four weeks ago—when I asked you to share ideas about how I can best
help you on your self-publishing journey? Well, share you did, by
the hundreds. The responses came fast and furious—and bore striking
similarities.
As I read them, I started channeling a certain Arkansas politician
summing up a central theme for his presidential campaign. Around
the time I was studying the 115th email making the same ask, I said
to myself:
“It’s book marketing, stupid.” That’s what you want help with from
BookBaby and me in 2021, and that’s what you’re going to get.
(By the way, the notes are still coming in. I’m doing my best to
respond to each one. If I haven’t gotten to you, please know I
will. Thanks for your patience.)
My fabulous BookBaby teammates and I are already hard at work
developing a game plan to prioritize and explore every pertinent
book marketing and promotion topic we can think of. For now, I
invite you to browse the book marketing ideas and advice already posted
on the BookBaby blog.
We plan to launch a major, year-long effort to help self-published
authors find their readers, and while we get our book-marketing
content ready, I invite you to check out another great resource to
help you reach your 2021 publishing goal: our brand-new 2021
BookBaby catalog.
I’m old enough to remember that mail-order catalogs were sometimes
called “wish books,” and that’s what this is, presenting all of the
products and services BookBaby offers to help you become a
professionally published author.
It’s a great way to start the year—and your self-publishing
journey.

Hemingway
once wrote, “Courage
is grace under pressure.” Many people believe we only
show it in the face of fear or danger, but bravery isn’t reserved
for those who rush into burning buildings.
To sit in front of a keyboard and bleed your heart night after
night—that takes guts.
To become a voice for those that aren’t heard or can’t speak—that
takes nerve.
To dedicate chunks of your life just for the chance to make a
positive change—that takes pluck.
You’re courageous every day you inch closer to your dream. And
before the new year arrives, take a moment to reflect on how much
you’ve already accomplished, ready yourself for the victories that
lie ahead, and remember the support you have every step of the way:
