Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) Minutes, 4 January 2021

CWG met last night for the first time in 2021 on Zoom with Alice, Sarah, Karen and Gemma in attendance, Sam and Neil having passed on their apologies.

Everyone wished everyone a Happy New Year and discussed our various Christmases.

The minutes from the last meeting were passed.

WIP updates: Karen had not written anything since the last meeting as she had been busy applying for jobs but she was successful with #PitMad in December and received a request for the first three chapters and synopsis of her second RS novel. Alice has been working on her synopsis and covering letter to take part in the GEA virtual conference 1-2-1s. She has also been planning her new novel which has involved trying to come up with a solution to how parents would not question six children being away from home without them. Sarah has been working on book three, is at 62k words and hoping to have a 80k words first draft. She hit a brick wall at one point in the middle but she got there and is aiming to write 5k words a week, though some weeks it is closer to 3k words. Gemma has been researching for her novel and found out via FB about a group where someone had accessed the lower level of an assylum and taken photographs, so she now has a visual of the long corridor that features in one of her chapters. She's also read and enjoyed a friends fantasy novel. It had good character development with stories for two more within the world. As this was her friends first book, she was very impressed. Gemma has also visited Storthes Hall as the main admin block is still there although the building converted to student accomodation.

There were no feedback sessions.

CW comps/workshops/events: The Honest Authors Podcast by Gillian McAllister was recommended and a discussion followed on what some of the members wanted to achieve with their writing.

Writing plans: Gemma is going to finish the chapter she mentioned earlier. Sarah hopes to achieve another 6k words in the next two weeks. Alice wants to finish her planning which she hopes will help her to stop procrastinating and start writing. Karen hopes to edit her crime novel to send to the agent, edit the picture book to send to the waiting agent and get her current WIP to first draft. Gemma kindly offered to take a look at the crime novel for feedback.

Writing challenge/session: There was no time for this but Karen suggests a writing challenge with the theme 'New Year' for those that wish to work on something before the next meeting.

Next meeting: The next meeting will take place on Monday 18 January 2021 at 5.45pm on Zoom using the same links as before.
