Hello there,
The deadline for our Fiction
& Memoir Competition 2020 is fast approaching, so we thought
it would be a good time to send you our best editing tips. Whatever
genre your writing falls into, hopefully the suggestions below, taken
from our A Novel in Nine Steps
ebook, will help you put those finishing touches to your final draft.
- Try recording and listening to your prose. If
it sounds monotonous, try varying sentence length and rhythm,
and prune clauses to add ‘bounce’.
- In your word document on your computer, use
the ‘find and replace’ function to search for a word you suspect
you overuse. If it reappears often then consider substitutes.
- And finally! Pay attention to your title.
List published titles (not books) that appeal to you most. Why
are they arresting? What do they have in common? They may hint
at more meaning (like Sarah Waters’ The Little Stranger); or perhaps
they evoke a mood. For your title, try rifling through a
dictionary of quotations for similar phrases, or copy Ernest
Hemingway, a master of memorable titles: he listed 100
favourites for a new novel, crossed them off one by one then
settled on the last to survive.
You have until
midnight 21 September to send us your flash fiction or short story entries, and/or the extracts from
your children’s or young adult novel, or your memoir or life-writing manuscript.
If entering a
novel or memoir, remember, you only need to send in your first 5,000
words in the first instance. There is lots of time to
finalise the whole manuscript before we call in the longlist.
We can’t wait to read your work.
