Things to do this weekend in Leeds, Kirklees and New York

Got plans for the weekend? Here are a few ideas for Leeds, Kirklees and New York:

seven artspace leeds

Courtyard Jazz @ Seven

This weekend, the weather promises to be good, so perfect for sitting outside at Seven. And we've lots of inside space too, so no need to book a table unless you want to.

Luigi’s Street Food Italiano will be here all weekend with his fabulous Street Food Italiano from 12 noon today through until Sunday evening, for eating in and takeaway.

This Sunday, 19th July, 1.30-3.30pm, Courtyard Jazz organised by JazzLeeds, a welcome return for the Gypsy Jazz quartet from Leeds and York, “Manouche North” with Vernon Bigsby on  guitar, Stephen Schulman on violin, Christine Pinkard on clarinet and Julia Schomburg on cello. PWYF donations please.

And of course, look forward to the sunday Quiz, also on Sunday 19th July at 8pm. Test your knowledge in a relaxed, socially distanced atmosphere – as ever, a great way to challenge those little grey cells and end the weekend with friends and family. £2 per person entry with prizes.

If you have not been to the quiz before and would like to take part, please email info@sevenleeds.co.uk and we will send details.

We look forward to seeing you at Seven very soon. Every £ spent at Seven helps support high quality arts in a local setting.

Library Adventures From Home - 15th July 2020

Library Adventures Live!

Did you watch the first Library Adventures Live! event? We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! If you missed it but would like to see the inspiring Joseph Coelho reading from his new book, Zombierella (we LOVED the scary librarian bit!), you can catch up here (but start at 4:50 to avoid the holding screen).
Next Tuesday's event stars author and illustrator Rebecca Patterson, winner of the 2012 Roald Dahl funny prize. In her robot-themed adventure, she'll be giving a fast-paced reading from A Robot Girl Ruined My Sleepover and entertaining us with her drawings. Start thinking of futuristic ideas - she might even draw your suggestion! Watch live at 11am on Tuesday 21st July on the Kirklees Libraries Facebook page or our YouTube channel. If you've any questions you'd like her to answer, you can send them in advance to frontline.services@kirklees.gov.uk.
Find out more about Library Adventures Live! and check out the schedule of events for the summer and beyond.

Book Review of the Week

HarryHarry (age 8) recommends Who Let the Gods Out? by Maz Evans
"My book review is on an audio book I listened to called Who Let the Gods Out? which is basically about a boy and the Greek gods. The boy and a constellation accidentally free Thanatos, the god of the demons, who wants the earth stone, air stone, fire stone and water stone to defeat the Greek gods. I'm just waiting for the third book to come out as an audio book because the first and second one are so good."
Take Harry's advice and download an audio book from the Who Let the Gods Out? series for free - but don't borrow the third one until he's read it first!
If you'd like to have your book review published in Library Adventures From Home, get in touch by emailing socialmedia.lics@kirklees.go.uk

Any fool can be happy. It takes a man with real heart to make beauty out of the stuff that makes us weep.

American Artist
American Artist is a writer, educator and designer among other trades. Through work with interfaces, Artist's projects incorporate everything from video, to photography and old software.
In this interview, they discuss how their art work explores the inner workings of African American labor and visibility in our heavily connected world.
Outdoor Dining Obstacles
As restaurants battle with social distancing restrictions, they must also actively improve their seating arrangements. Eateries have been forced out on to streets to organize tables, tents, and umbrellas to serve guests.
Now, the new dining circumstances come with their own safety concerns and weather vulnerability.
Creativity Raising Funds
Library Street Collective is holding auctions, selling work from different artists to fundraise for numerous community groups.
The artists working with Library Street Collective are able to choose which nonprofit to allocate 100% of the money raised. Sam Friedman, a New York artist, is set to be first on the platform line up, dedicating proceeds to NYC Together.
