Science fiction and fantasy films push the boundaries of
the imagination to another realm where anything in this world, other
worlds, or even the entire universe can exist. The sky is, in fact, not
even close to the limit! Writing the science fiction/fantasy screenplay
requires creating a world and population in which the reader will
curiously and excitedly take the leap of faith with the writer, and not
only believe and understand what is actually occurring, but care about
it.
The science fiction/fantasy script that will grab the
film executives’ attention should contain more than magical and
fantastical elements, characters who can perform wizardry, or
anticipated CGI. The writer’s goal, your goal, is to have the reader
suspend disbelief and not get stuck on unnecessary stumbling blocks.
Your goal as the writer is to go beyond derivative. Go beyond
stereotypical characters and create a compelling screenplay!
