Good
morning,
Maybe it’s a sign of old(er) age, but I’m turning into one of those
people who go all out to minimize risk. My insurance guy’s eyes
must light up when he sees my number pop up on his cell phone. What
can I say? I like to be covered, so I have this checklist for
myself:
- Homeowners
insurance… check.
- Car insurance…
check.
- Health insurance…
check.
- Pet insurance…
check.
And one more from a few years
back:
What? You’ve never heard of book
insurance? That’s because it usually goes by another name: Editing.
When I finished my first manuscript a few years ago, I knew that
the book needed the services of a great editor. She did a terrific
job of streamlining my words and adding clarity to many of my
thoughts, and I was in her Good Hands* as she
protected me from embarrassing typos and errors. Publishing a book
without editing is just too risky for self-published authors trying
to compete in the marketplace.
I’ll go one better than the old, “Fifteen minutes could save you 15
percent”*
insurance offer. Here’s a
coupon code for 20 percent off your next BookBaby editing order—type
BBEDIT20
in the coupon field when you check out.
Our friend Frank Moriarty certainly knows the value of editing.
He’s written 16 books, including his latest, Modern
Listener Guide: Jimi Hendrix, that he self-published
through BookBaby. In “The Importance of Editing for the
Self-Published Author,”
Frank speaks about the importance of editing for every book,
especially for self-published authors.

Happy
Independence Day,
It’s my favorite American holiday, with the pageantry of small-town
parades, firework displays, family BBQs, and more. (Although
COVID-19 is the proverbial bees attacking this year’s picnic.) I
know the calendar doesn’t agree with me, but I also celebrate July
4 in another way: Welcome
to the real start of summer!
For self-published authors, today marks another important starting
point: It’s go-time to finish that manuscript. Experienced authors
planning to publish and sell books during that other holiday season
in December know what to do. They’re putting down the fishing
poles, softball mitts, and golf clubs and getting back to the
keyboard.
That’s what you should be doing too. Each year, we publish a
timeline to help self-published authors manage the calendar and get
their books on the shelves in time to rake in holiday sales. It
starts earlier than you think, and this year’s post, “Your Publishing Timeline For Holiday Book
Sales,”
is a great step-by-step guide to a successful holiday launch.

P.S. If the temptation of hot summer
days snoozing in the hammock is just too strong after the long,
torturous quarantine, don’t worry. There’s never really a bad time
to publish your book.
