Not sure what to do this weekend? Here are a few ideas for those of my followers who live in, near to or are visiting (or indeed virtually) Leeds, Scotland and Bradford:
WIN a DIY feast at
Bulgogi as they reopen this weekend...
|
| |
|
|
|
Nearly there! Tomorrow, pubs and bars
across the city will reopen their doors after a three-month hiatus. But
not everyone is ready, so you need to know where to go, and for the first
time ever, how to book – which is why we've pulled together this almighty
list of the drinking dens that have announced their grand
reopening.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Exciting news! Bulgogi Grill will reopen
tomorrow, so you can enjoy a DIY feast packed with delicious Korean
flavours. Even better, we're giving you the chance to win a £150 splurge,
so round up your mates and get your entries in.
|
|
|
You've been locked in with the little
ones for all too long, so it's time for a day trip – and where better to
go than the zoo? These five have all reopened and every single one
of them has new safety measures in place to protect you.
|
|
More interested in eating than drinking?
Then you're in luck because restaurants and cafes are reopening
too. Our ever-growing list has 25+ options for you, all ready and
waiting to ply you with delicious food. Expect a raft of new safety
measures as we adapt to our new normal.

Sunday Quiz @ Seven
Seven's Sunday Night Quiz is back -
this Sunday. 5th July at 8pm. We've been running a zoom version for
many weeks but now it returns live at Seven for all those who miss the
real thing.
So the Seven Quiz is back, but to misquote Star Trek, ‘not (quite) as
we know it.’
I’m sure many of you have seen the government guidelines re pubs, bars
etc and how they can re-open. It’s complicated! Obviously the safety of
Seven staff and you, the customer, is a huge concern so……
Socially distanced tables, allocated to each team, will be available in
the bar and venue along with hand-sanitising, table service and a
one-way entry and exit system. Your server will take your drinks order
plus a £2 per person entry fee. We are not having a raffle for the time
being but there will be prizes for the quiz.
You will need to book a table for this fantastic event and choose a
preferred arrival time. Why not come early and have an extra
celebratory drink? Local street fooders @igloopizzakitchen
will be at Seven from 12:00 to 9:00 so you could have something to eat
as well. (It’s Seven’s 13th birthday by the way.)
To book a table, one person per team please email quizmaster, Roger
Hunter leedsrog@gmail.com
with your team details : name of each team member, phone number and
email, plus for socially distancing, so we know how many households are
involved.
Also please choose a 15 minute slot from 6:00 to 7:45 (6:00-6:15,
6:15-6:30 etc) for your preferred arrival time. We will do our best to
accommodate your requested arrival time. We will email the
necessary confirmation, or if needed, an alternative arrival time.
Although all payments will be by CARD, I’m sure cash tips will be
readily accepted by the bar staff! Look out for the huge
receptacle by the exit. As you know we can supply pens but bringing
your own would be a good idea.
Please bear with us on Sunday night – we have tried to plan for
everything but……
We look forward to
seeing you at Seven very soon. Every £ spent at Seven helps support
high quality arts in a local setting.

|
|
|
|
We
are very sorry to announce the
postponement of all mainstage
productions due to tour in Autumn 2020

the first of these projects: a

planning a new mainstage tour from
January 2021, tailored to respond to
the ongoing need for social distancing
for audiences, performers and backstage
staff. We will share news about this in
the Autumn.
Ticket

possible by the Box Office you booked
with, to refund all bookings. Please be
aware this may take some time due to
limited staffing. If you’re paying for
tickets by Direct Debit in Leeds*, the
Opera North Box Office will call you.
In the meantime we hope our FAQs may
help answer refund queries.
Thank
you for your support and understanding
at this most challenging time. We can’t
wait to share music with you again in
the very near future.

Summer is officially
in full swing, however, it may look a little different for us all this
year as we look closer to home for holiday inspiration. Whether
you’re exploring the wildlife in your local area or looking
for things to do on a rainy day, our Summer Holiday Fun
Activities will have something to inspire
you - whatever the weather.
While we're
delighted to keep you in touch with what we're doing digitally, we're
pleased to let you know that we're busy preparing to reopen our museums.
We'll be announcing our reopening dates soon and we'll make sure you're
among the first to know!
In the meantime,
read on for more museum stories including a blog from our Director on
towards reopening our doors, some behind-the-scenes updates from our
collections team and an insight into how contemporary
objects are acquired to create a museum of the future.

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
This month our Director,
Chris Breward, considers how our engagement with history will
move from the digital realm to a more tangible experience when we
reopen our museums in the coming months. He reflects on his
experiences in museum spaces and the memories attached to objects
encountered and appreciated along the way.

In recognition of Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods
arriving on Netflix, here are our recommendations for viewing more
of this groundbreaking director’s work.
For anyone wanting to gain a better cultural
understanding of recent Black History in the USA, Lee’s commentary
on race relations and class is significant role. With four
decades of filmmaking under his belt, he has won numerous accolades
for his work and is continuously praised for his exploration of
various political issues.
|
|
|
|
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Focusing on
the experience of black veterans in the Vietnam War, a
group of men return to the country decades later to find
their squad leader's remains — and a stash of buried gold.
This film has already generated excellent reviews showing
that Lee hasn’t lost his ability to create unforgettable
films.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Do the Right Thing (1989)
Now 31
years old, and shockingly prescient, Lee’s breakthrough
film explores racial tensions on a hot day in New York.
With an incredible cast including Samuel L. Jackson and
Giancarlo Esposito, it also launched the careers of Martin
Lawrence and Rosie Perez.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
She's Gotta Have It (1986)
Spike Lee’s
first feature follows Nora, a Brooklyn artist as she
navigates her way through three relationships. The film
offers a still rarely seen view of Black, urban,
middle-class Americans.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
BlacKkKlansman (2018)
An
entertaining and thought-provoking movie based on a true
story. Ron Stallworth, a young black detective, and his
colleague Flip Zimmerman take on the undercover
investigation of a lifetime, infiltrating and exposing the
Ku Klux Klan.

Disclosure (2020)
Cathy
Pilkington - Communications Officer
Sam Feder's
new documentary is an eye-opening look at transgender
representation in the media, from some of the earliest

Assault on

(1976)
Toni
Booth - Associate Curator of Film
A John Carpenter
film from his prime. Real tension is created by a taut
script, sharp direction, brutal action and great
performances too (often the downfall of low budget films).
And of course, a great soundtrack from Carpenter
himself.

Atlantics (2019)
Eleanor
Mitchell - Website Manager
An
unforgettable meld of ghost story, romance and sci-fi from
writer/director Mati Diop. The astonishing cinematography
by Claire Mathon (who won a César for her work on Portrait
of a Lady on Fire) adds a beautifully surreal quality
to every frame. The resulting atmosphere stayed with me

Alice

Voguing
communities in the US were introduced to the masses in the

film Deep In Vogue, available on BBC IPlayer looks
at voguing in the North of England and explores just how
important queer spaces and voguing as a method of
expression still are for LGBTQ+ people.
