Q & A
Diane Dillon
Many books encourage children to aim high, but few take on the small, internal voice that discourages them. Diane Dillon’s I Can Do Anything! Don’t Tell Me I Can’t, the first book she’s written without her husband, the late Leo Dillon, shows a girl exploring everything from astronomy to deep-sea diving and learning how to tame her internal doubts along the way. PW spoke with Dillon about doing research in pajamas, managing pastel dust, and learning to quiet her own little voice of discouragement.

Q: Where did the idea of the conversation with the little voice come from?

A: I wrote the story in the year after Leo died. It was something that just came to me. I felt like kids need to know that they don’t have to listen to that voice, and they can talk back. As I thought about it, I realized that it was a personal thing that each child has, a thing that they picture themselves, and I decided not to give it a personality or a body. more

Rights Report
Alex Arnold at HarperCollins/Tegen has acquired a fantasy duology, Muse, by Brittany Cavallaro. Muse is set in an alternate history World's Fair Chicago, where America is a monarchy, science is king, and magic shouldn't exist—and one girl's touch has the power to grant wishes. The first book is slated for fall 2020, following the publication of a fourth book in Cavallaro's Charlotte Holmes series, in winter 2019; Lana Popovic at Chalberg & Sussman brokered the deal for North American rights.
Jennifer Ung at Simon Pulse has bought two as yet untitled contemporary YA novels by Akemi Dawn Bowman, author of the Morris Award finalist Starfish. The first novel follows a multiracial teenage girl who dreams of quitting school to become a trapeze artist in her parents' Las Vegas circus, against their wishes, prompting her to join a rival circus. There, she grows close to a handsome musician and performer—while untangling her family's complicated past and present. Publication is set for fall 2019 and 2020; Penny Moore at Empire Literary negotiated the two-book deal for North American rights.
Nicole Otto at Imprint has acquired, in a preempt, debut author Adalyn Grace's feminist YA fantasy duology, All the Stars and Teeth, in which a fierce princess strikes a deal with a pirate and embarks on a high-seas adventure to master a vicious magic before it destroys her kingdom. Publication of the first book is planned for winter 2020; Hillary Jacobson at ICM Partners did the two-book deal for world English rights.
Catherine Laudone at Simon & Schuster has bought Lauren Spieller's YA novel, She's the Worst, pitched as 10 Things I Hate About You meets Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Two sisters fulfill their pact to spend an epic day together before one leaves for college, but when a secret is revealed it will either bring them closer or pull them apart for good. Publication is scheduled for fall 2019; Jim McCarthy at Dystel, Goderich & Bourret handled the deal for world rights.
Wendy Lamb at Random House/Lamb has acquired Beach Season by Mae Respicio, author of The House That Lou Built. Longing to get her family back to normal after a tragedy, a girl uses her love of the ocean, special-effects make-up, and Filipino folklore—plus a special visit from her great-grandfather—to find a way to help them move on. Publication is slated for 2020; Sarah Davies at Greenhouse Literary brokered the deal for world English rights.
Calista Brill at First Second Books has bought Kiku Hughes's middle grade graphic novel, Displacement, a memoir-based, magical realist story about a teenager who is pulled back in time to witness her grandmother's experiences in WWII-era Japanese internment camps. Publication is planned for 2020; Kiku Hughes represented herself in the deal for world rights.
Taylor Norman at Chronicle has acquired K.A. Holt's new book, Kate and Tam. The middle-grade novel in verse tells the story of two girls who are polar opposites yet become fast friends, and then begin moving toward something more. Publication is set for fall 2019; Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency negotiated the deal for world rights.
Kristin Rens at HarperCollins/Balzer + Bray has bought world rights to author-illustrator Lina Maslo's picture book, The Door to Narnia, a biography of C.S. Lewis and the journey that led him to create the world of Narnia. Publication is scheduled for fall 2019; Rubin Pfeffer at Rubin Pfeffer Content represented the author-illustrator.
Kate O'Sullivan at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has acquired, in a preempt, Hannah Salyer's debut picture book. Packs is a selection of collective nouns that celebrates togetherness and gives children new ways to envision their own community—and the role they play in it. Publication is set for fall 2019; Kirsten Hall at Catbird Productions did the deal for world rights.
Michael Joosten at Doubleday has bought world rights to Cale Atkinson's Unicorn Science. The comedic picture book features Professors Glitter Pants, Star Hoof, and Sugar Beard (plus trusty lab assistant Pete)—the world's leading unicorn experts—as they deliver the facts, settle the mysteries, and show readers that unicorns are more than just horns and rainbows. Publication is slated for fall 2019; Nicole Tugeau at Tugeau 2 represented the author-illustrator.
Adrienne Szpyrka and Julie Matysik at Running Press Kids have acquired world rights to Zoe Persico's debut picture book as author and illustrator, Georgia. The book tells the story of a creative girl from a family of artists who wants to be a scientist, eventually realizing that science can also be a work of art. Publication is planned for spring 2019; Anne Moore Armstrong at Bright Agency represented the author.
Neal Porter at Holiday House/Neal Porter Books has bought world rights to Charlotte Zolotow's In My Garden, about the many forms a garden can take. Philip C. Stead, who has been a fan of Zolotow's work since he was nine, will illustrate. Publication is scheduled for spring 2019; Edite Kroll represented the author's estate, and Emily van Beek at Folio Jr./Folio Literary Management represented the illustrator.
Meredith Mundy at Sterling has acquired world rights to a picture book by Laurie Wallmark (l.) (Grace Hopper: Queen of Computer Code), titled Hedy Lamarr's Double Life. The book is about the glamorous movie star who, unbeknownst to her fans, was the co-inventor of the technology that led to the development of WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth. Grace Hopper artist Katy Wu will illustrate. Publication is slated for spring 2019; Liza Fleissig at Liza Royce Agency represented the author, and Jennifer Mattson at Andrea Brown Literary Agency represented the illustrator.
Mary Lee Donovan at Candlewick Press has bought world rights to Hayley Barrett's (l.) picture book Babymoon, illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal. The book is a celebration of the special bonding time when a newborn first comes home. Publication is set for spring 2019; Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency represented the author, and Stefanie Von Borstel of Full Circle Literary represented the illustrator.
Brett Duquette at Sterling has acquired world rights to Lindsay Bonilla's (l.) picture book, Polar Bear Island, featuring an immigrant penguin and an unhappy polar bear. Cinta Villalobos will illustrate; publication is planned for fall 2018. Christa Heschke at McIntosh & Otis represented the author, and Hannah Whitty at Plum Pudding Illustration represented the illustrator.
Barb McNally at Sleeping Bear Press has bought world rights to Waiting for Snow author Marsha Diane Arnold's (l.) Badger's Seeds, a picture book about gardens, friendship, and serendipity, in which Badger's plans for a perfect garden are derailed by a heavy rainstorm. Ramona Kaulitzki will illustrate; publication is scheduled for spring 2019. Karen Grencik at Red Fox Literary represented the author, and Anne Moore Armstrong at the Bright Group represented the illustrator.

FEATURED REVIEWS
Alma and How She Got Her Name
Juana Martinez-Neal. Candlewick, $15.99 (32p) ISBN 978-0-7636-9355-8

Her full name is Alma Sofia Esperanza José Pura Candela, and it’s so long that “it never fits,” as the girl explains to her father. (When she writes it on a sheet of paper, she has to tape an extra piece to the bottom.) But as Daddy explains that there’s a remarkable relative behind each of her names, Alma realizes that she embodies their talents and character. Martinez-Neal’s first outing as author is a winner. more
The Long Island
Drew Beckmeyer. Chronicle, $17.99 (64p) ISBN 978-1-4521-5485-5

Beckmeyer’s auspicious debut imagines a group of humans living on one side of a long, narrow island. The far side of the island, “the one nobody had ever seen,” is guarded by forbidding rocks and lush vegetation “too dense to cut through.” Consumed with desire to reach the island’s far side, the islanders construct a gigantic slide. Once they reach the inaccessible side of the island, they have a new problem: they can’t get back. more
Fairy Spell: How Two Girls Convinced the World That Fairies Are Real
Marc Tyler Nobleman, illus. by Eliza Wheeler. Clarion, $17.99 (40p) ISBN 978-0-544-69948-9

Nobleman resurrects the story of an early 20th-century hoax that pulled the wool over the eyes of many Britons, including Arthur Conan Doyle. Cousins Frances Griffiths and Elise Wright copied elaborate drawings of female dancers in flowing garb from a book, then photographed themselves outdoors with these “sprites.” After Doyle published the photos, alongside his article about fairies, in a popular magazine, “everyone was aflutter." more
Crash: The Fall and Rise of America in the 1930s
Marc Favreau. Little, Brown, $18.99 (240p) ISBN 978-0-316-54586-0

Favreau, in his first book for children, explains Black Tuesday, the 1929 stock market crash, the Great Depression, and the steps the United States government took to try to help its citizens get back on their feet. He begins by recounting stories of how the stock market crash and subsequent economic depression affected real people—across different socioeconomic levels, ethnicities, genders, and geographical locations—giving readers an understanding of personal hardships and a glimpse into how economics works. more
Folded Notes from High School
Matt Boren. Razorbill, $17.99 (368p) ISBN 978-0-451-47820-7

The year is 1991, when teens didn’t communicate through texts but through handwritten notes stuffed into lockers, desks, and mailboxes. In a novel that captures the lingo, fads, and teenage preoccupations of the period, actor and TV writer Boren makes a charismatic debut as he traces the ups and downs of Tara Maureen Murphy’s life through notes exchanged between friends and enemies. more

Q & A
Jane Yolen
Jane Yolen has written so many books for children that one could read a book of hers a day for an entire year and still have one left over. Yolen’s latest novel, Mapping the Bones, is a retelling of “Hansel and Gretel” set during the Holocaust. Its publication coincides with the 30th anniversary of Yolen’s first novel about the Holocaust, The Devil’s Arithmetic. PW spoke with Yolen about revisiting the subject in Mapping the Bones, which will mark the publication of her 365th book.

Q: How does it feel to have had such a long career in writing children’s books?

A: I can’t even believe it myself—the enormity of writing so many books. But of all the novels I’ve written, the Holocaust novels are maybe the ones I’m most proud of. more

Rights Report
Catherine Onder at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has acquired, in a preempt, Ally Carter's debut middle grade series, starting with The Winterborne Home for Vengeance and Virtue. Pitched as what would happen "if little orphan Annie went to live with Batman," the book follows April and a ragtag group of undervalued, underestimated kids as they teach a mysterious billionaire that he has a family worth fighting for. Publication of the first book is set for fall 2019; Kristin Nelson at Nelson Literary Agency negotiated the two-book deal for North American rights.
David Gale at Simon & Schuster has bought, in an exclusive submission, Dry, a YA novel by National Book Award winner Neal Shusterman (l.) and his son, Jarrod Shusterman, a film and TV writer. In this survival story, the California drought escalates to catastrophic proportions, and a group of teenage friends must band together when chaos breaks out in their community. Dry is scheduled for publication in October 2018 and has been optioned by Paramount Pictures; Andrea Brown at the Andrea Brown Literary Agency brokered the deal for world rights.
Sarah Shumway and Hali Baumstein at Bloomsbury Children's Books have acquired North American rights to three books from Elizabeth Eulberg, including Past Perfect Life, a YA novel about a girl whose life unravels when she learns everything she thought she knew about herself and her so-called family is a lie. Publication is set for spring 2019; Shumway will edit. An as yet untitled middle-grade standalone novel, edited by Baumstein, is slated for fall 2020. Also acquired was the fourth book in the middle-grade series The Great Shelby Holmes; the book is planned for fall 2019. Erin Malone at William Morris Endeavor did the deal.
Laura Schreiber and Hannah Allaman at Disney-Hyperion have preempted, in a two-book deal, North American rights to Elysium Girls, a debut fantasy by Kate Pentecost. Pitched as Mad Max: Fury Road meets Caraval in an alternate history American Dust Bowl, the book features a girl gang of witches and a wildcard demon who are the most valuable players in a deadly game between the Goddesses of Life and Death, one with possibly apocalyptic consequences. Publication is slated for winter 2020; Sara Crowe at Pippin Properties negotiated the deal.
Alison Weiss at Sky Pony has bought The People of the Lake, a debut novel by Nick Scorza, about a 16-year-old Queens girl who, while investigating her friend's murder in her father's small upstate town, uncovers secrets that the town—and her family—will do anything to keep buried. Publication is set for spring 2019; Jason Anthony at Massie & McQuilkin brokered the deal for world rights.
Julie Matysik at Running Press Kids has acquired #OwnVoices author Natasha Deen's Nira Paints the Sky in B-Flat, a contemporary coming-of-age YA story about a Guyanese girl who must find the balance between her parents' cultural expectations and traditions while pursuing her dream of being a great trumpeter. Publication is scheduled for April 2019; Amy Tompkins at Transatlantic Agency did the deal for North American rights.
Eliza Swift at Albert Whitman has bought world English rights to Tom Ryan's Keep This to Yourself. Pitched as Last Seen Leaving meets I Am Not a Serial Killer, the book is about a group of lifelong friends who are shattered when a serial killer strikes their small town and claims one of their own. A year later, unable to let go, Mac finds himself investigating new clues, and begins to wonder if he can trust anything, including his feelings for his best friend, the boy who died. The novel is slated for a spring 2019 release; Eric Smith at P.S. Literary handled the deal.
Lisa Sandell at Scholastic has acquired, for the new Scholastic Focus imprint, Rebecca Rissman's The Space Chase: A True Story of the Women and Men Who Tested to Become America's First Astronauts. The narrative nonfiction middle grade book begins with the birth of aeronautics and evolves into a story about the way gender politics affected the development of the American space program. Publication is set for early 2020; Jennifer Unter at the Unter Agency brokered the deal for world rights.
Kate Harrison at Dial has bought, at auction, debut author-illustrator Zoë Tilley Poster's The Night Wild, a picture book about Dog, who is swept up by the moon-bright light and has an adventure before dawn breaks. Publication for the first title is planned for spring 2020, with a second, untitled picture book to follow; Andrea Morrison at Writers House negotiated the deal for world rights.
Jill Davis at HarperCollins has acquired Baby Scientist, a series of four board books by Laura Gehl, illustrated by Daniel Wiseman. Each book features a baby who presents an area of science, including botany, oceanography, paleontology, and astronomy. Publication for the first two books is scheduled for summer 2019; Erzsi Deak at Hen & Ink Literary represented the author, and Teresa Kietlinski at Bookmark Literary represented the illustrator for world rights.
Carol Malnor at Dawn Publishing has bought world rights to Lucy's Lab author Michelle Houts's (l.) picture book, tentatively titled Coal, a true animal rescue tale about an owl mother who chooses an unlikely nesting spot, power plant workers who decide to do the right thing, and an environmentalist with a big heart and warm shirt pockets who lends a helping hand. Deb Hoeffner will illustrate; publication is slated for fall 2019. Karen Grencik at Red Fox Literary represented the author, and the illustrator represented herself.
Rotem Moscovich and Heather Crowley at Disney-Hyperion have acquired Thunder Trucks by Katy Beebe (l.) (Brother Hugo and the Bear) and Cheryl Klein (The Magic Words), illustrated by Mike Boldt (How to Grow a Dinosaur). In the rhyming story, Dozer, Crane, Dump Truck, Fire Truck, Tanker, and Big Rig work together to construct a wonderful thunderstorm. Publication is planned for fall 2019; Brianne Johnson at Writers House represented the authors, and Jennifer Rofé at Andrea Brown Literary Agency represented Boldt.

FEATURED REVIEWS
The Funeral
Matt James. Groundwood (PGW, dist.), $18.95 (40p) ISBN 978-1-55498-908-9

In his first outing as author, Canadian artist James examines the way the funeral of a distant relative feels to a child. Great-uncle Frank was old when he died, and Norma’s mother is sad. Norma isn’t sad, yet she understands that the occasion is somber, and she sits through the long church service patiently. James's story traces with a big heart the way she makes sense of this puzzling event. more
People Don’t Bite People
Lisa Wheeler, illus. by Molly Idle. Atheneum, $17.99 (40p) ISBN 978-1-4814-9082-5

In a combination of listicle, admonishment, and pep talk, the well-matched Wheeler and Idle remind children that they are too long in the tooth, so to speak, to be chomping on others: “Puppies bite and babies bite./ They’re much too young to know./ But you grow bigger every day/ and know where teeth should go.” Whether readers are biters, bite-ees, or witnesses to a biting incident, they’ll find this a toothsome treat. more
The Orphan Band of Springdale
Anne Nesbet. Candlewick, $18.99 (448p) ISBN 978-0-7636-8804-2

In this uplifting, multifaceted historical novel set in 1941, financial strains force nearsighted 11-year-old Gusta to leave her parents and New York City for her grandmother’s home in Springdale, Maine. Gusta is surprised by much in Springdale (including that her grandmother runs an orphanage), though nothing is more astonishing than her German-born union organizer father’s sudden disappearance during their bus trip to Maine. more
Picture Us in the Light
Kelly Loy Gilbert. Hyperion, $17.99 (368p) ISBN 978-1-4847-2602-0

Danny Cheng is an artist and one of the least wealthy kids at Silicon Valley High School; when he gets a full scholarship to RISD, he pictures his “whole life radiating like a sunbeam out from this one point.” But the sunbeam is shadowed by the guilt and grief that Danny, his best friend Harry, and Harry’s girlfriend feel about their friend Sandra’s death, and it fades entirely when his father’s job loss forces the family to move. more
