Northern Writers’ Awards roadshow in Hull: more speakers added
We are pleased to let you know we have added two additional speakers to our panel events at the Northern Writers’ Awards roadshow at Hull University on Saturday 21 November. If you haven’t already, you can sign up for this FREE afternoon of events at Eventbrite
Mark Stanton is a literary agent with Jenny Brown Associates. He represents writers from an array of genres including: literary fiction, crime and thrillers and non-fiction—particularly in the areas of sport and popular culture. In 2011 he was short-listed for Literary Agent of the Year. Mark will be taking part in our panel on Writing Fiction and Poetry.
Lisa Holdsworth will be joining us on the Writing for Television panel. Lisa is originally from Leeds and has worked in television in the city since she graduated. Lisa’s first commission was an episode of Fat Friends, which was shortlisted for a Best New Writer BAFTA. Since then, she has written an original play for Radio 4 and spent three years on the Emmerdale writing team. She left to write for the third series of the BBC’s police drama New Tricks, which she has contributed to ever since. She has also written on four series of Waterloo Road, including a feature length series opener.  She wrote two of the final series of Robin Hood, including the largely discussed 'Origins' episode.
Grants for the Arts sessions. Also available on the day will be 30-minute one-to-one sessions with Arts Council England Relationship Managers, Oliver Bliss and Alison Boyle, who will be able to advise writers on prospective project funding from Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts programme. The sessions will run between 12.30 and 3.30pm.
Please note: these one-to-one sessions cannot be booked on Eventbrite. If you are interested in signing up to a half-hour surgery, please email anna@newwritingnorth.com with a one-paragraph outline of your proposal by Wednesday 18 November.
The full programme for Saturday 21 November is as follows:

Writing for Radio (12-1pm): Sue Roberts, the Editor of BBC Radio 3’s The Verb and Audio BBC Radio 3 and 4, will lead a discussion on writing for radio at the BBC. Sue will discuss what radio drama is and what the BBC is looking to commission. She will give you the lowdown on how to get work commissioned, and will also discuss the potential for cross-platform projects and more experimental approaches to creating work for radio.
Writing for Television (1.30-2.30pm): Writers Nuzhat Ali and Sharma Walfall will discuss their first steps and experiences so far on the Northumbria University/Channel 4 Writing for Television bursaries and give advice on how to prepare your work for this award opportunity. They will be joined by television writer Lisa Holdsworth, who has written for Fat Friends, Emmerdale, New Tricks, Waterloo Road and Robin Hood.
Writing Fiction and Poetry (2.45-3.45pm): Two previous Northern Writers’ Awards winners, children’s novelist Chloe Daykin and poet Zaffar Kunial, will discuss how novelists and poets can approach applying for an award and how to develop a career in writing and publishing. They will be joined by Mark Stanton, a literary agent with Jenny Brown Associates. Mark represents writers from an array of genres including: literary fiction, crime and thrillers and non-fiction—particularly in the areas of sport and popular culture.
