It would have been his 90th birthday this year of Hermeto Pascoal.  A Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist, Pascoal was best known in Brazilian music for his orchestration and improvisation, played here by a stellar line-up of musicians. Seven Courtyard or Venue. The wait is nearly over. The Odyssey screens from Friday and is the first feature film ever shot entirely with IMAX Film Cameras.

This week we're reflecting on those ground-breaking formats throughout film history with our very own screening of This is Cinerama alongside a projection room tour.

Cinerama was launched as the ultimate immersive experience back in 1952, and synchronised 35mm projectors are used to project three images simultaneously, creating a stunning visual on our curved screen.

Celebrate something old and something new this weekend as we show off the best of the big screen.

Join Joseph Coelho at this special London Literature Festival event that takes KS2 students on a poetic journey.

Joseph will showcase his new book, Rapunzel is a Lettuce, and introduce some works from the National Poetry Library’s children's collection that are available to read in our brand-new 'Poem A Week' resource for KS1 and KS2 teachers. 

Tickets are £5 per student. Teachers go free.

We're creating a new resource called Poem A Week – a year-round toolkit to help teachers spark creativity and discussions weekly through poetry. Featuring special poems for key dates like World Book Day, this resource aims to make incorporating poetry day-to-day simple and stress-free.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR LAUNCH EVENT

High School Musical officially landed at Lowry with a star-studded launch event featuring the cast, creative team and special guest Jason Donovan. Guests enjoyed live performances of songs from the hit musical, exclusive insights from the directors and interactive experiences inspired by East High.  The venue was transformed with themed set props, including a Wildcats basketball challenge and character inspired displays, giving fans a taste of the energy, nostalgia and feel-good fun audiences can expect from the upcoming production.

Co-directed by Hope Mill Theatre founders Joseph Houston and William Whelton, with a book by David Simpatico and music adapted, arranged and produced by Bryan Louiselle, this is High School Musical like you’ve never seen it before.  Featuring all the hit songs from the original film, including Breaking Free, We’re All In This Together, Stick to the Status Quo, Get’cha Head in the Game and many more.

Hi  It has been an exciting few weeks at Chetham's Library. We are delighted to share news of an important new acquisition, a fascinating eighteenth-century manuscript account book that offers fresh insights into medicine, trade, and daily life in the North West. We also highlight Unbound - our latest exhibition exploring the stories told by historic bookbindings - welcome two new doctoral students whose research will uncover hidden voices in early printed books, and feature the remarkable Budé Bible from our Treasure Series. We hope you keep reading and enjoy discovering more about the collections, research, and people that continue to make the Library such a vibrant centre for learning.

Friends of the Nations Libraries Supports New Acquisition

We are very grateful to the Friends of the Nations Libraries for their support in purchasing a new item for the collections. This is a manuscript account book of John Hull, an apothecary from Poulton-le-Fylde in the mid eighteenth century. It includes lists and prices of goods purchased for his business and his home, an account of materials, workmanship and other expenses towards the building of two houses, accounts for payments to various workmen, payments from lodgers and building material expenses. This manuscript account book offers valuable pathways for historical research. Hull’s role as an apothecary in the north-west of England means that the manuscript offers critical insights into the medical culture of the eighteenth century. While we know quite a lot about the early modern medical networks and practices surrounding London at this time, we know less about these practices in the north-west. The manuscript not only lists Hull’s business and domestic medical expenses, but allows researchers to reconstruct his network of contacts, tradespeople in Poulton-le-Fylde and beyond. Hull's family expenses, lists of building costs, and purchases of decorative clothing items such as shoe buckles will be of significant interest to scholars of early modern consumption and daily life. As a major repository in the North West and a nationally significant centre for the study of history, it is important that the Library continues to develop its collections, and fill gaps in its older historic collections. We are delighted that material can continue to be added, by purchase and by donation.

Book Binding Workshop

As part of our latest theme, Chetham’s Library Unbound, we will be hosting a series of craft workshops relating to the creation of books. Our third workshop will be BINDING. Join us in the Old Kitchens and learn how to make a selection of simple book bindings, as well as discovering more about the fascinating history of the craft.

What book bindings reveal

Our latest exhibition focuses on the wide variety of bindings that can be found on the books in our collections and what they can tell us. Some of our most luxurious bindings reflect the rich tastes of kings and queens, while more utilitarian bindings attest to the the pragmatic attitudes of everyday professionals such as practicing physicians. The materials of these bindings include leather, parchment, paper, fabric and wood, and their condition ranges from well-preserved to worn and damaged to repaired or completely re-bound...

Meet Our New Doctoral Students

Chetham’s Library exists within a broader academic community and in addition to our staff and visitors who work hard to keep the Library open and make the collections accessible, we have recently welcomed two new doctoral students, Finch Collins (pictured) and Harriet Hale. Both are engaged in different approaches to explore the “hidden voices” in early printed books (books printed between c. 1450 and 1750) within Chetham’s Library’s catalogue. We look forward to learning what their research reveals.

Chetham's Library Treasure Series

We recently received an inquiry regarding the Budé Bible and as this item is part of our Treasure Series, we thought it would be a good time to highlight it in this month's newsletter. The Budé Bible is the first printed edition of the Latin Bible to include the Glossa ordinaria, the standard Bible commentary from the later eleventh and early twelfth century. The Library's copy is unique as it is annotated by Guillaume Budé, who was one of the most influential of the French humanist scholars at the beginning of the sixteenth century!
