250 years ago today, rebel American colonists adopted the Declaration of Independence, breaking away from Britain. As we explore in a new blog, this momentous document was underpinned by the same principles that drove the science of the time.

You can see a rare 1776 copy of the Declaration in our upcoming exhibition Becoming America: How Science Shaped a Nation, supported by Griffin Catalyst, opening 23 October.

Blast off at The Space Show

Latest Events, News and Opportunities

Wednesday, July 8th

This week, we’re delighted to tell you how you can have your say on the future of culture in Kirklees! What do you think culture should mean for our district?  Everyone is invited – whether you live in Kirklees, work or own a business here, or just visit us regularly - to have their say on the proposed Cultural Strategy. You can do this online, or by attending one of the in-person consultation drop-ins on 9 and 16 July.

Also, there is a great opportunity to attend the next Dewsbury Culture Lab at the Dewsbury Arcade Pop-up on Thursday 9 July and the Ashbrow Culture Lab on Tuesday 14 July when you can connect with others, explore new possibilities and help shape cultural activity and action in your local area. Whether you're an artist, community organiser, volunteer, local group, young person or simply someone who cares about your neighbourhood, they'd love to welcome you.

Now that summer has well and truly arrived with the amazing weather, there are some equally amazing activities going on in the area.   Coming up this Saturday (11 July) the Livefields Festival is back at Oakwell Hall, bringing fans from all over the country to celebrate the legacy of legendary music icons. Returning for its third iteration, also on Saturday, the Ink Spill Festival brings with it an incredible programme - celebrating the poetic talent of Huddersfield and its surrounding areas at the Head of Steam in St George’s Square. And if you haven’t yet visited Holmfirth Art Week, one of the UK’s largest Open Art Exhibitions, featuring well over 400 exhibitors and over 2,000 artworks, plus 50 Fringe venues you still have chance as this runs until Saturday (11 July).

As ever, these are just a few examples of what’s going on – do keep checking in on our websites!

WIN a day out in Hebden Bridge!

With thanks to Hannah of Get Lost Yorkshire:

Weekly Escape

Hey

There are some places in Yorkshire that instantly make you slow down.

You hear the sound of rushing water before you even see it. Sunlight filters through the trees. The air feels cooler, fresher, and for a little while the rest of the world seems to disappear.

That's exactly how I felt when I visited Lumb Hole Falls near Hebden Bridge.

Hidden away in the South Pennines, this beautiful waterfall feels like something straight out of a fairy tale. The walk itself is just as memorable as the destination too, winding through peaceful woodland, rolling hills and open countryside before revealing the falls tucked away below.

One thing I particularly love is that you can easily turn it into a full day out. After visiting the waterfall, you're only moments from the spectacular woodland at Hardcastle Crags, while the cafés and independent shops of Hebden Bridge are just a short drive away.

It's one of those Yorkshire adventures that somehow still feels wonderfully undiscovered.

If you're thinking of getting outdoors this summer, I've put together a complete guide with everything you need to know before you visit, including where to park, the walking route, what to expect along the way, and a few important things to know before you go.

👉 Read my complete guide to Lumb Hole Falls here

If you're anything like me, there's something incredibly calming about sitting beside a waterfall for half an hour and simply listening to the water tumble over the rocks. It never gets old.

Until our next adventure,

P.S. 🌿 There's one fascinating piece of history hidden beside the waterfall that most visitors walk straight past. I nearly missed it myself, but once you know the story, it makes the visit even more memorable. It's included in the guide.
