Local & Community History Month

May is Local & Community History Month! It aims to increase awareness of local history, promote history to the local community and encourage everyone to join in.

Pages in Leeds Exhibition

Local & Family History, Central Library, during opening hours.

The Skippko Community Research Team have been looking at various objects and artefacts connected with the city of Leeds over the past twelve months.

These come from the personal collection of Robin Dove, a shopkeeper and local historian, who spent much of his life researching and writing about Leeds and Chapel Allerton. Sadly Robin passed away in 2022 and his archive was passed down to his nephew Matthew Bellwood – one of the Skippko artists.

All the objects were made and used in Leeds at some point over the last 150 years. They include hat brushes, alarm clocks, beer pump badges, tuning forks, whistles, wall plaques, bricks and money boxes. Members chose a selection of their favourite ones to research and explore further.

Skippko are are looking for new members to join their Research Team. If you're interested in local and family history or enjoy chatting about objects or places of interest, contact cath.skippko@gmail.com.

Cultural Conversations

Park Life talkPark Life: Music in Roundhay Park by Dr Peter Mills

Wednesday 8 May, 1.00-2.00pm, Leeds Central Library

This conversation focuses on the history of pop music concerts in Roundhay Park. The modern history stretches back to 1982 in terms of large-scale events, but the Park has a rich and broad musical history which goes back much further. The importance of Roundhay Park to the city's own self-image is considered, as is the role the concerts played in the city's cultural reinvention in the late 20th century. Following the timeline reveals much about the changing nature of musical staging and performance, alongside the city's willingness and capacity to stage such events. We'll reflect on the future of huge events in the Park, post-pandemic, as the music industry and the city of Leeds rapidly change.

Free talk, book here.

Dying Matters Week 6-12 May

When Breath Becomes AirDeath and loss are inevitable parts of life, and navigating the emotions they bring can be incredibly difficult. This Dying Matters Week, we have a range of books that explore these sensitive topics with compassion and guidance.

For adults, memoirs like "When Breath Becomes Air" and "Dear Life" offer raw and honest accounts of facing terminal illness and loss. Titles like "You Are Not Alone" and "Grief Works" provide practical advice and support for navigating the grieving process.

We also have books specifically written for children, such as "A Monster Calls" and "If All the World Were," which use storytelling to help children understand and cope with the loss of a loved one. "Luna's Read Hat" is specifically designed to support children who have experienced the loss of someone to suicide.

Preparing for death is another important topic. "Funerals Your Way" offers guidance on planning a personalised funeral, while "A Straightforward Guide to Handling Bereavement" provides practical steps for handling the immediate aftermath of a death.

Whether you are seeking personal stories of loss, practical advice on coping with grief, or support for children, we have books that can help you through this challenging time. Simply pop in, or search our catalogue.

Who's Afraid of GenderWho’s Afraid of Gender by Judith Butler

The famed contributor to Feminist, Political and Queer Theory returns with a deceptively simple question: Who’s Afraid of Gender?
After Butler described gender as performative, and 3rd wave feminism worked to disassemble institutionalised misogyny, why are so many people so eager give their power away to authoritarian forces, and be so confident it won’t be used against them?

Helen KellerThe Story of my Life by Helen Keller

IS THIS THING ON?

7.30pm on 4th May 2024
at The Warehouse in Holbeck

Fancy a bit of stand-up comedy, poetry, music, storytelling?
Well this has it all...

Meet flatmates Mary and Liz, one a musician and the other a poet, as they battle over integrity, ownership, the spotlight and whose turn it is to buy the f*cking toilet roll.

As their friendship reaches boiling point, one fateful open mic night forces them to confront each other over whose right it is to tell someone’s story. This two-hander dramedy blends stand up, song, spoken word, rap, and storytelling to investigate what’s better - sad songs or sh*tty poetry? Is This Thing On? is written and performed by Megan Keaveny and Ellie Campbell (MissMatch), and is an electric new piece of devised theatre co-produced with So La Flair Theatre. This collaboration marks MissMatch's debut into the theatre scene with the show already being praised as 'full of humanity, heart, and humour' (MancMade Productions).

...as well as being So La Flair's well anticipated return from their sparkling tour of 'How To Keep Up With The Kardashians' (2022) which celebrated them as the 'company worth watching' (British Theatre Guide).

May in the Kent Downs

Read on for our latest updates and a peek at what's happening in the Kent Downs National Landscape over the next month.

This month, we're excited about the launch of our GeoAdventures festival, sharing which wild orchids to look for this spring, and celebrating the completion of vital chalk grassland restoration work in the Darent Valley.

Introducing GeoAdventures!

GeoAdventures is a nine-month festival celebrating the aspiring Cross-Channel UNESCO Global Geopark and the importance of geodiversity in the Kent Downs National Landscape and our French counterpart, the Parc Naturel Régional des Caps et Marais d’Opale.

Running from May 2024 to February 2025, you’re invited to delve into the heart of geodiversity, exploring how the earth, sea, and landscape have shaped our world and the communities within it today. Whether you’re passionate about wildlife and nature, interested in citizen science and woodlands, or simply looking to immerse yourself in arts, crafts, and outdoor activities, there’s an GeoAdventure waiting for you.

Choose from events for all ages, all themed around our incredible chalk geology that makes the Cross-Channel Global Geopark so unique. New GeoAdventures are being added throughout the festival and we'll be sharing them with you throughout the year.

Spring orchids in the Kent Downs

There are around 52 different species in Britain, and around 25 of these can be found in the Kent Downs National Landscape. Our designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is one of the only place in Britain where wild orchids such as the late spider orchid and lady orchid can be found. In fact, it’s the iconic chalky grassland, that’s low in nutrients, combined with our warm climate that makes the Kent Downs one of the best regions in the country for orchids.

So, if you fancy a spot of wild orchid-hunting this spring, find out which orchids to look out for during April and May in our latest blog.

Chalk grassland restoration

Chalk grassland is an increasingly rare habitat and one of the richest in Western Europe, with a biodiversity arguably unmatched in the UK. Unfortunately, it is in danger of disappearing along with the associated plants and animals which thrive on it.

Our Darent Valley Landscape Protection Scheme has been funding our partner, the Kent Wildlife Trust, to help restore and manage three of their chalk grassland nature reserves located in the Darent Valley.

The installation of fencing and water supplies at Polhill Bank and Fackenden Down has allowed grazing animals to be introduced to the area, helping to control scrub from encroaching on the fragile plants. These sites are once again home to a rich wildflower meadow which provides habitat for a wide variety of insects, including many species of butterfly.

A three-year programme of manual scrub clearance was completed earlier this spring at Goss Bank on Kemsing Down. Management like this can often appear destructive but it is vital to cut back bushes and trees before they swamp the wildflowers. Man orchids, bee orchids, and common spotted orchids can all be found here as well as a wide variety of other grassland flora and butterflies.

The completion of this restoration work ensures these precious habitats with flourish for years to come.

Making Space for Nature in Kent

Making Space for Nature in Kent and Medway are developing the county's Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS). The LNRS will identify the priority habitats and species across the county that offer us the biggest potential for nature recovery, and allow us to make the best decisions about how we use our land.

Making Space for Nature are thrilled to share their Draft Shortlist for nature recovery priorities with you. From over 800 suggestions, they've narrowed down 60 critical priorities. Your input is crucial in shaping the final list, which will guide funding and investment towards nature restoration. Visit the website to view the shortlist and learn about the process.

Places to visit in the Kent Downs
Looking for inspiration for your next adventure in our National Landscape? Look no further! Here's our top spot to visit this May:

Queendown Warren
Originally a rabbit warren in medieval times, Queendown Warren Nature Reserve is 76 hectares of chalk downland renowned for its variety of orchids.

The south-facing slopes of the reserve are a fine example of unimproved chalk grassland. These grasslands typically occur on shallow soils with a high calcium carbonate content and often have an extremely rich flora with up to fifty species in every square metre.

Located outside Sittingbourne and managed by Plantlife, herds of Highland cattle and Konik ponies graze here year-round to produce the short sward height needed by its special plants and butterflies.

A wide variety of butterflies occur here including the beautiful Adonis blue introduced by Kent Wildlife Trust in 2002.
