Hebden Bridge Arts - The Man Who Planted Trees

We're collaborating with Calderdale residents to present an environmentally-focused project drawing inspiration from Jean Giono's timeless tale, "The Man Who Planted Trees".

Throughout May, we extend a warm invitation to each of you to participate in our workshops and guided walks. These immersive experiences promise to ignite your passion for environmental conservation and offer valuable insights into our collective efforts.

But that's not all! Mark your calendars because from 28 May to 15 June, we're proud to unveil our inaugural exhibition at the Hebden Bridge Town Hall cafe and foyer.

WALK AND DRAW WORKSHOP: ELLAND
Meet at Project Colt
THIS SATURDAY 1.30-4.30PM (suitable for ages 16+)
Led by Paul Knights and artist Sally Barker

Join us this Saturday for an afternoon stroll starting at Project Colt in Elland. Afterward, get creative at our art workshop until 4:30pm.
Pay what you can afford from £3 - advance booking essential.

We begin with a walk beside the canal and the River Calder, soaking in the sights, sounds, and the environment around us. On this walk with Paul Knights we'll delve into the area's rich industrial past and its impact on the environment today.

Along the way, we'll collect natural materials for our workshop with artist Sally Barker. You will draw, paint and print with these materials, using them together with natural inks. You will layer your drawings with words to create your own individual artwork that has grown out of and with the environment around us. No art experience required

CROMWELL BOTTOM NATURE RESERVE GUIDED WALK
Located just off the Brighouse to Elland Road A6025
SUNDAY 19 MAY 1:00-3:30PM (suitable for ages 14+)

Come for a gentle, two-mile walk around Cromwell Bottom Local Nature Reserve with guide Paul Knights.
Pay what you can afford from £2 - advance booking essential.

As we amble on the accessible paths, we will consider the remarkable industrial history of this part of the Calder Valley, and its astonishing rejuvenation into a mosaic of woodland, wetland and meadow that has become the wildlife jewel in the borough's crown. We will see how a site once so used and abused can, with the dedication of those who care, be transformed into a thriving haven for birds and bats and bees, and also for people.

Paul Knights is a writer, landscape photographer and guided walk leader exploring the narratives embodied in rural landscapes. He brings 25 years of environmental experience – from practical work in nature conservation and in agriculture, to academic research, teaching and public engagement – to facilitating understanding of landscape, place and nature.
