Dear Reader,

I spent a night with a Black Mamba. Not the poisonous kind, thankfully, but one of the women from the world’s first all-female anti-poaching unit in South Africa. They look kick-ass in their army fatigues, patrolling Kruger National Park, sniffing out signs of poachers. But – critically – they’re unarmed. This has courted controversy in a country where violence can be met with violence, but the data reads differently. Poaching incidents have fallen by 63 percent since they put their boots on the ground just over 10 years ago. You can read about my encounter with them – and many other fabulous women (plus Bridgerton’s Luke Thompson) –  in our delicious new issue, which is on the stands from Wednesday.

WHAT’S EXCITING ME THIS WEEK

Get Gardening

You may have noticed the weather has not been kind to our gardens thus far. If you’re hoping that May is when you can be pottering and potting, let our new gardening columnist tell you exactly what you should be doing this month.

What The Hell Is Hyrox?

Fed up with CrossFit, gym junkies are turning their attention to Hyrox, a terrifying sounding ‘race’ that commences with a 1km run, followed by a circuit of exercises – such as sled pushes and sandbag lunges – all repeated eight times. Pass me the remote.

Which Travel Tribe Are You?

Can you spot the TikTok influencers or the couple who treat their dog like their first-born? Course you can. You’re at one of the UK’s most wonderful hotels and there’s always a type you can recognise at the next table. Which one are you?
