THE GOOD BOOK

is available to view now

In a future Leeds, society is divided between loyalists of the powerful Queen Bear and radical followers of Galahad. A young woman wishes not to choose a side in the war that wages among them, but she must undertake a dangerous mission to rescue a precious relic from destruction.

About The Good Book

The film is Leeds People’s Theatre's first production, produced by Slung Low.

Filming of The Good Book took place in early 2020 across some of the most iconic locations in Leeds including Slung Low’s base The Holbeck (the oldest working men’s club in Britain), Holbeck Cemetery, Leeds Central Library and Leeds Town Hall.

It is directed by Sheffield’s Brett Chapman and written by James Phillips. The Good Book continues with Phillips’ themes of future dystopia, begun in The White Whale at Leeds Dock in 2013, continued in 2014 with Camelot, the Shining City and last explored as a centre piece of Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s performance programme and on the BBC with the epic 4-part Flood.

The Good Book stars Riana Duce, Katie Eldred and Angus Imrie along with over 100 citizens of Leeds with a crew brought together from across the North of England and beyond.

Contains extreme language.
A Leeds People's Theatre Production Presented by Slung Low. Supported by Arts Council England, Leeds 2023 and Leeds City Council.

Following on from our last newsletter, we have gathered more entertainment for you to enjoy while staying at home.
We thought we'd also share some recommendations from our cinema and museum team. We hope you like them as much as we did!
Lastly, in the latest from our blog, Festivals Assistant, Jack Wentworth-Weedon, crosses the digital boundary from films to videogames - sharing his top picks for gaming together and gaming apart.

Cinema At Home

Invisible Man
Misbehaviour
Emma

Following the closure of cinemas across the country, films such as The Invisible Man, Misbehaviour and Emma, which had been enjoying successful theatrical runs, have been released through on demand platforms much earlier than planned.
Similarly, more and more studios are releasing new films online for us to enjoy at home.
This helpful article from Yahoo outlines the current list of films that you don't have to miss out on now that our doors are temporarily closed.

Live Theatre, Art And More At Home

In last month's newsletter we shared the best streaming platforms for you to enjoy theatre and art from the comfort of your home.
Our top pick for the coming month is Danny Boyle's Frankenstein, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. Watch for a limited time through the National Theatre at Home.
Additionally fans of musical theatre can enjoy Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicals, streaming every Friday at 19:00.
For further cultural picks, The Guardian has gathered an in-depth list of the best theatre and dance to watch online.

Staff Film Recommendations

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2020)

Toni Booth – Associate Curator of Film

An astounding piece of film making from Céline Sciamma. It is radical, romantic, elegant, dramatic and rooted in the reality of women’s lives in the 18th century. Released in February, this is one of the most acclaimed films of the year so far and is already available for you to stream at home.

Free Solo (2019)

Vicky Clifton – Head of Learning

Documentary following Alex Honnold as he prepares to climb the 3,200-foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without ropes. Even for non-climbing enthusiasts this is an absolutely gripping film with some real heart stopping moments. The film was screened in our IMAX last year and is a cinematic experience not to be missed.

Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow (1963)

Gin Jacobucci – Volunteer Coordinator

This genuinely fun comedy follows three couples across different parts of Italy. Winning the Academy Away for Best Foreign Language Film in 1965, the film features lots of sunny shots to brighten up a gloomy day and an iconic performance from Sofia Loren.

The Damned United (2009)

Phil Oates – Communications Manager

The story of Brian Clough's infamous 44-day stint as manager of Leeds United in 1974. Some of the filming for this Yorkshire-based film took place just opposite our cinema and museum, in the former police station which stood on the edge of City Park.
