Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes 4 June 2018

Cleckheaton Writers Group took place on Monday 4 June at Cleckheaton Library, where Mandy, Kathy, Karen and Pauline were in attendance, Sarah, Alice, Neil and Cassie having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the last meeting were passed.

WIP updates: I have written over 3k more words on my WIP. Kathy has written a flash fiction of 250 words and entered it into the Bridport Prize competition, along with a short story based around a private letter. Mandy has also entered a 250 flash fiction into the Bridport Prize competition and has been promoting her two new books, working on her poetry collection and guest blogging.

Feedback sessions: Kathy brought along her short story entitled 'Drop thy still dews of quietness' for feedback. She had shortened the story as an exercise and the result was very tight prose and moving, based as it was on real life.

The CLF anthology was discussed and we are waiting to hear back from Helen Cadbury's agent/family before all first proofs can be sent to contributors for approval. Mandy asked if she and Alison Lock could bring along their books to sell at the CLF launch also and it was felt that any author attending that is a CLF anthology contributor could bring along their books to sell if they wished.

I had brought along some chapters of my WIP and shared one section. The group felt it was different to my normal style of writing but it was well received. We then discussed the plot points.

CW comps/workshops/events: The Cosmopolitan magazine has a romance story competition and the Costa Short Story competition is still open. Ink Tears flash fiction competition has a deadline of 31 July (500 words and the work can have been previously published elsewhere) has a £3.50 entry fee and no theme. Mandy also mentioned the Flash 500 competition, which has an end of June deadline. Mandy will be attending the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Festival in Harrogate this year, as will Sarah.

The next meeting will take place on Monday 18 June 5.30-7pm.
