Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes

The Cleckheaton Writers Group meeting took place last night at Cleckheaton Library, where Kathy, Alice, Sarah, Arlene, Pauline and I were in attendance, Mandy and Neil having passed on their apologies.

We welcomed back Pauline and Arlene to the group and the minutes from the last meeting were passed.  We then gave updates on our works in progress (WIP).  I have been working on my pilot script and another script as part of my scriptwriting course, which has now finished, and I have written a poem that I brought for the feedback session.  Alice has finished her WIP, which is now resting as she works on short pieces for her writing course and she has started a blog, which can be found here: www.aspieinterest.wordpress.com.  Sarah's WIP is also resting but she has received feedback on it from the Bath novel writing competition and an agent, and she is hoping to pitch it at the Dragon's Pen event at Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Festival in Harrogate later this month.  She has researched past Dragon's Pen events as it was mentioned at a Bradford Literature Festival event she attended recently with Liz Mistry (she got her agent through this) and there is an audio available
by Radio 4 of a previous Dragon's Pen for those that wish to work on their own pitch.  Pauline and I are also attending Creative Thursday at Theakstons, so we will be on hand for moral support.

For the feedback session I shared my poem 'No Brexit' with the group.  It was well received and I was encouraged to share it at the open mic poetry event I am planning on attending in July.  There were no other pieces for feedback so this gave us plenty of time to discuss the events coming up at Bradford Literature Festival (www.bradfordlitfest.co.uk) and other writing information.

Pauline informed us that in the July Writers Magazine there is a myths and urban legends article which she feels will be helpful for those writing fantasy and that edition also features a free book with the magazine, which she recommends, entitled Teach Yourself How to Craft a Great Story.

She also told us that one of our other CWG members, Mandy, has a short story 'Sardine Herding' published in the latest Writers Forum which received some great comments from the judge.

The next meeting of the Cleckheaton Writers Group takes place on Monday 17 July 5.30pm-7pm.  Meetings take place fortnightly at Cleckheaton Library and new members are always welcome.
