Hello there!
Another cracking issue of Lighthouse is with us, and on Monday we're
throwing a party to welcome it into the world. Just like last time, we've
got plenty to celebrate: Lighthouse Issue 5 is a bigger, beefier summer
issue (perfect for those of you with holidays planned), with 80 pages of
great stories and poems, as well as insightful essays on our theme of
translation from George Szirtes, B. J. Epstein and others.
We'll also be celebrating the inclusion of two Lighthouse stories in the
leading anthology, Best British Short Stories 2014. In his editorial,
Nicholas Royle paid us the following handsome compliment:
'But the development of the year in short fiction – yes, more
exciting, perversely perhaps, for this observer, than either Alice Munro
winning the Nobel or Lydia Davis nabbing the Man Booker International –
was the emergence of Lighthouse, a little magazine from Norwich publishing short stories,
poems and essays of exceptional quality, including one (Anna Metcalfe’s
‘Number Three’) that was later shortlisted in the Sunday Times EFG Short
Story Award worth £30,000. Lighthouse, with its excellent editorial judgement and attractive
modishly old-fashioned design, is a publication to cherish.'
But the fun doesn't stop there. Again we're offering our loyal mailing
list subscribers a 20% discount on the new issue on the night. Just show that you're in the
know when you come to buy your copy by using the phrase 'Benfleet' - and
your new Lighthouse will be a whole pound off! Of course
if you can't make it you can still make sure that you don't miss out by
picking up your copy on the Gatehouse website, but we'd love to see you
there.
So come and celebrate with us in Norwich this coming Monday the 7th of
July, from 8pm onwards at the Black Horse pub on Earlham Road. We're
looking forward to seeing you there!
The editors xx
