22 Jump Street movie review

My daughter and I went to see this film this week and what a laugh it was; not quite as good as the original, but this is normal for a sequel.

IMDB says: After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt and Jenko when they go deep undercover at a local college.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie), Jonah Hill (Superbad, Wolf of Wall Street) stars again as Schmidt and Channing Tatum (White House Down, Magic Mike) as Jenko.  The chemistry between the two is still there, a bizarre bromance that somehow works and even though this time they go to College rather than High School, it is a very similar plot.

Ice Cube (Boyz n the Hood, Friday) reprises his role as Captain Dickson and there is a brief uncredited appearance from Dave Franco (Now You See Me, Warm Bodies) as Eric Molson and Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street, The Hangover) as Mr Walters, but apart from Nick Offerman (We're the Millers, Sin City) as Deputy Chief Hardy, Caroline Aaron (Edward Scissorhands, Cellular) as Annie Schmidt and Joe Crest (The Ring, RED) as David Schmidt, these are the only guys from the original.  New to the franchise are Peter Stormare (Armageddon, Bad Boys II) as The Ghost, Wyatt Russell - Kirk Russell's son - (Cowboys and Aliens, This is 40) as Zook, Amber Stevens (Greek, The Amazing Spider-man) as Maya, Jillian Bell (Bridesmaids, Workaholic) as Mercedes, Jimmy Tatro (Grown Ups 2, Life According to Jimmy) as Rooster and The Lucas Brothers as Keith and Kenny Yang.

There are some lovely nods to other films the two main actors star in and an hilarious play on the relationship status when they go to see the College counsellor, Marc Evan Jackson (Suit Up, The Kings of Summer) as Dr Murphy and a funny cameo in the dream sequence from Dustin Nguyen (Little Fish, V.I.P.) from the original 21 Jump Street series as Vietnamese Jesus when Jenko is high from taking WHYFY.

Do stay for the brilliant montage during the end credits.

Tagline: They're not 21 any more.

Sun's out, guns out.                                                                               8/10
