Photo panels on easels in various rooms show Bolling Hall when the Tankard family lived there in the 1870s – 1880s, and during its restoration into a museum from 1912 – 1915. There is also a small display in the Housebody showing objects linked to Bolling Hall, such as a sword discovered under an attic room’s floorboards, a book found in the garderobe and the ceremonial key used in the museum’s opening ceremony in 1915. Wednesday@One - Organ Recital Wednesday, 15 October (1pm) at Bradford Cathedral FREE This weekly organ recital series brings together top-class performers who present beautiful music spanning the centuries, all within a relaxed and welcoming setting. The current season, themed 'Global Connections', highlights works by composers with meaningful ties to the city and District, offering audiences a rich tapestry of sound and heritage. Turner Prize 2025 Until Sunday, 22 February FREE The world’s most exciting visual arts prize is coming to Bradford for the first time. The Turner Prize is one of the world’s best-known prizes for the visual arts. It aims to promote public debate around new developments in contemporary British art. The prize is awarded each year to a British artist, and is named in honour of the radical painter JMW Turner. The shortlisted artists – Nnena Kalu, Rene Matić, Mohammed Sami and Zadie Xa – were announced on 23 April 2025. Their work will feature in the annual Turner Prize exhibition, which takes place at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery. The winner will be announced in Bradford on 9 December 2025. Black History Month Until Friday, 31 October across the district This October, we proudly present a dynamic and inclusive programme of events for Black History Month 2025 – a celebration of heritage, creativity, and community. Join us as we honour the achievements, culture, and contributions of the Black community across generations. Frontline 1984/1985 Until Wednesday, 29 October (10am - 5pm) at National Science and Media Museum FREE A selection of photography from Frontline 1984/1985, an exhibition exploring Bradford's African Caribbean communities in the ’80s. Victor Wedderburn Jr arrived in the UK from Jamaica in 1971 at the age of 16, joining his Windrush Generation parents here in Bradford. When redundancy took his job at Crofts Engineers in the early 1980s, he used his pay-off to buy a second-hand camera and film developing kit, then set about documenting life in the city. This selection is drawn from Frontline 1984/1985, the first ever exhibition from this self-taught photographer, and vividly evokes African Caribbean life in Bradford 40 years ago. From Lumb Lane landmarks such as Roots Record Shop and the Perseverance Hotel to sound system parties, these photographs tell a story that’s sometimes written out of Bradford’s history. Ilkley Literature Festival Until Sunday, 19 October in Ilkley The north’s longest-running literary festival returns for its 52nd year. Politicians, national treasures, journalists, novelists, historians, comedians, and academics head to the spa town across 17 packed days for in-depth discussions, debates, and workshops. Headliners and highlights include: Jung Chang, Michael Palin, Mary Portas, Alan Davies, Jay Rayner, Hugh Bonneville, Nick Clegg, Ruby Tandoh, Simon Armitage, Lady Hale, Rachel Joyce, and Irvine Welsh. Ilkley is renowned for showcasing cutting edge poetry since its inaugural festival in 1973, which was opened by W.H. Auden. Poetry highlights this year include readings from Poet Laureate, Yorkshire’s Simon Armitage, a New Northern Poets showcase, and a reimagining of Tony Harrison’s controversial poem ‘V’ 40 years on, from poets including Andrew McMillan and Malika Booker. Drunken Film Festival Until Sunday, 26 October across the district FREE The Drunken Film Festival returns this October with a packed programme of free events across the Bradford district. Known for bringing independent film to unexpected spaces, the festival offers screenings, filmmaker Q&As, stand-up comedy, live music, and a strong sense of community. It’s not about alcohol—it’s about being immersed in film. - Addingham Moor Circular (Saturday, 18 October | 10am - 3.30pm) - The walk starts at Darwin Gardens car park, follows Mill Ghyll down to the Grove in Ilkley, and then down to New Brook Street. You will follow the riverside path to the Old Bridge (toilets available), picking up the start of the Dales Way alongside the River Wharfe and then field paths to reach the old road towards Addingham. You then turn off this to walk through the historic mill hamlet of Low Mill to the edge of Addingham. After crossing the A65, you will follow field paths and tracks gently up hill at first to the edge of Addingham Moor. You will then climb steeply up moor paths to reach Wind Gate Nick, where you will follow the Millennium Way on the level edge of the moor escarpment back to Ilkley.

In 1889, Frederic Cliffe rose to overnight fame when his first symphony was a sensational success. But just a few years later, despite writing several popular songs and featuring at the Proms, he had disappeared into obscurity. His songs have lain unsung for over 100 years. But now, following new research by a local amateur musician, they will be heard in public once more at this unique musical event - at the church where he began his musical career.
