A message from our Festival Director:

Durham Book Festival is nearly here and I'm really looking forward to seeing faces old and new at Gala Durham.

There are so many events that I'm excited about this year: from Ian Leslie talking about John Lennon and Paul McCartney's magical musical friendship, to Bishop Auckland-born Fiona Hill launching a brand new podcast series, Forged in the North, in which she will interview some of the North East's most successful people, from Sting to Sara Davies.

We've commissioned three brilliant poets to write their own responses to the late Tony Harrison's seminal poem v., and are introducing some of the hottest names in new fiction, including International Booker shortlistee Vincenzo Latronico.

We're kicking off on Friday night with Mary Portas in conversation with Jane Shepherdson – the person who helped dress women across the nation during her tenures at Topshop and Whistles.

I hope to see you there!
Rebecca Wilkie, Director of Durham Book Festival

Ilkley’s Literary Pulse

Ilkley Literature Festival

The 2025 Ilkley Literature Festival continues this week, with a number of famous faces appearing — including sold-out shows with comedian Alan Davies and an evening with Poet Laureate Simon Armitage. Limited tickets are still available for Mary Portas’s event, I Shop, Therefore I Am, this Thursday.

Tickets are also available for events running this weekend (Sat 11 & Sun 12). Somerset Maugham Award-winning author Lamorna Ash explores why young people are turning to faith in our age of uncertainty. BBC Verify correspondent Ben Chu explains what happens if globalisation fails in his event Exile Economics. Chair of Natural England Tony Juniper (CBE) discusses how we can live good lives without hastening global collapse, and Guardian journalist John Harris shares how a love of music became a source of precious connection between him and his son, who has autism.

Poet Andrew McMillan brings together a panel of fellow northern poets — Malika Booker, Paul Farley and Jo Clements — to discuss the impact of Tony Harrison’s seminal poem V., which explores class, alienation and northern identity. Harrison, who recently passed away at the age of 88, stirred controversy when his poem was first released in the 1980s, with calls from MPs for it to be banned and the Daily Mail labelling it a “torrent of filth.”

All this and much more takes place across venues in Ilkley until Sunday 19 October.

Tickets are available from www.ilkleyliteraturefestival.org.uk or by calling the box office on 01943 816714.

Bradford 2025:

Elmet

Elmet

Date: 22 Oct - 2 Nov 2025 | Times: Various times | Location: Loading Bay | Ages: 14+ (Contains graphic violence, including sexual violence.)

Elmet is a gutsy story of family, revenge and the ultimate price of freedom – set in the wilds of the West Riding, created by Bradford-raised writer-director Javaad Alipoor and receiving its world premiere at Bradford 2025.

Cathy and Danny live apart from the world with towering bare-knuckle boxer Daddy, who’s built them an idyll amid the trees on a land “made of myths”. But a great reckoning is coming, led by all-powerful local landowner Mr Price – and it threatens to smash apart everything the trio hold dear.

Javaad Alipoor’s stage adaptation of Fiona Mozley’s Booker Prize-shortlisted novel bursts into life at Loading Bay with grit and guts – like an ancient tragedy reflected in shards of memory. With movement from Deb Pugh (Ad Infinitum) and new music from the BBC Folk Award-winning The Unthanks, this powerful production builds to a jaw-dropping showdown finale.
