50 Years On: Caribbean women and the Chapeltown Bonfire Night Incident of 1975
Dr Oliva Wyatt

On 5 November 1975, a clash between police and mostly Black youth in Chapeltown led to the arrest of twelve young men, later known as the Bonfire Twelve. Their fight for justice sparked both unity and division within the community.

This talk, held in memory of local activist Violet ‘Fayola’ Hendrickson, shines a light on the often-overlooked role of women during and after Bonfire Night. It situates the events within Leeds’ broader history of racial struggle and explores how young Black women supported those on trial.

As we mark the 50th anniversary, the talk challenges historical amnesia and reflects on how women, men, and the Black and White working classes have come together to resist racism and fascism in Leeds.

Special Event: Nina Conti Heads to Pictureville

Sunlight

Sunlight (15)
[With Nina Conti Q&A]

Friday 24 October, 19.15

We've got some real monkey business coming up for you in October as award-winning comedian Nina Conti joins Pictureville for a Q&A and screening of her directorial debut Sunlight, a hilariously dark and unconventional love story.

About the film

In 2012, Nina Conti won the Audience Award at SXSW for her BAFTA nominated documentary ‘Her Master’s Voice’. That film was about her relationship with a monkey puppet as a ventriloquist. Ten years on, her and Shenoah Allen bring you a film that is the full evolution of that predicament …

Disappearing into a monkey costume and creating a new persona, Jane strives to break free from a toxic relationship when she encounters a suicidal radio show host, Roy, who presents a path to freedom.

After hitting the open road in Roy's Airstream, the unlikely duo soon hatch a plan that could help finance a new life but could also land them in jail. Hot on their heels is Jane's controlling partner, Wade, who aims to put an end to Jane's newfound freedom.

Nina Conti

About Nina Conti

Nina has won a British Comedy Award, stormed Live at the Apollo, Russell Howard’s Good News, Sunday Night at the Palladium, and made a BAFTA nominated film—all without even moving her lips. Nina has now announced the dates of her largest scale UK tour to date—and in a spectacular feat of ventriloquism, it is entirely improvised every night.

Nina began her career as an actress at the Royal Shakespeare Company, before the genius and anarchic theatre director Ken Campbell inspired her to become a ventriloquist. In 2008 she won the prestigious Barry Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for her solo show Complete and Utter Conti. In 2010, Talk to the Hand had sell out seasons in Edinburgh, London, Melbourne, the Sydney Opera House and New York.

Drift into autumn

A poem selected by Sonia Hope, a Librarian at the National Poetry Library.

Hushed is the buzz of the noisy world

by George Gissing

Hushed is the buzz of the noisy world,

Gently each bird to its home is flitting,

The flags o’er the sun’s bright path are furled,

Soon will each flower with the dew be pearled

As asleep it lies unwitting.

Spell-bound is the ever-whispering air,

For, gazing aloft where the stars are peeping

In this holy silence everywhere

Tired Nature speaks in a fervent prayer

To Him who protects her sleeping.

This was our first time in Ireland and it could not have been a better experience. The pre-trip info was excellent to help us prepare. Any questions or concerns we had were always quickly addressed. We were very comfortable with the pace and level of the hike. Wilderness Ireland was also very helpful with pre- and post-trip info as we extended the trip on both sides to spend time on our own. Our guide was exceptional. He made such an extraordinary effort and took such great care to ensure that our experience of Ireland would be amazing. We highly recommend Wilderness Ireland!

Creative Kirklees

Latest Events, News and Opportunities

As autumn settles in, the opportunities to connect with local talent and creative communities in Kirklees continue with its rich tapestry of events, exhibitions, workshops and performances. Have a browse through our newsletter to see some highlights and visit our websites below to find more.

This week we bid a heartfelt farewell to one of West Yorkshire’s most cherished musical traditions. After 37 unforgettable years, the Cleckheaton Folk Festival is closing its doors with a spectacular finale concert at Batley Town Hall on Saturday 4 October - the event promises to be a fitting send-off for a festival that has brought joy, song, and community spirit to generations.

One of the season’s highlights is the Marsden Jazz Festival, taking place fom 10-12 October, returning with its signature blend of world-class music and community spirit. From intimate gigs in village pubs to big-name acts on the main stage, the festival transforms Marsden into a hub of rhythm and soul. With workshops, street performances, and family-friendly activities, it’s a celebration that welcomes everyone - jazz fanatic or curious newcomer alike.

For anyone who wants to get hands-on creative, do take a look at the abundance of workshops on offer throughout the district, including some for Halloween coming up in October.

Weekly Escape

It’s the first of October and I’m officially declaring it: spooky season is here. Whether you’re the type to decorate with cobwebs on the 1st or just enjoy the excuse for extra biscuits and cosy evenings, this is your friendly reminder to make the most of it.

And while I usually spend this time of year sharing autumn walks and hidden gems (don’t worry, those are still coming!), today I’m doing something a little different…

✨ I’m sharing my guide to making your very own Yorkshire-themed Boo Basket! ✨

Boo baskets are a fun and thoughtful little tradition where you gather up a few cosy or spooky treats and gift them to a loved one (or yourself, obviously). It’s Halloween meets hygge… with a Yorkshire twist, of course.

In my basket? Think Yorkshire wool blankets, warming tea, ghostly books, spicy ginger biscuits, and even a tiny handmade ghost from The Shambles 👻

🎃 Whether you’re a Halloween mega-fan or just need an excuse for more socks and snacks, this one’s for you.

👉 Read the full blog post and get inspired to make your own Yorkshire boo basket!

Go on – treat yourself this October (no tricks required).

Until our next adventure,
