The countess auctioning off her Chelsea townhouse, and your ultimate guide to Christmas shopping

And a big welcome back to…. lockdown! This can prove challenging for a newsletter that’s encouraging you to go out and do all sorts of good cultural stuff, but never fear, it’s cold and dark out there anyway. So put the kettle on, slip on your favourite PJs, read the delicious new issue of C&TH (even better, buy your best friend a subscription), and then get set to binge on one of the C&TH team’s favourite foreign box sets. Don’t fancy that? Not to worry, we’ll keep you fuelled with original ideas to boost your spirits all the way through lockdown and beyond.

Have a great week.

FIVE THINGS TO GET YOU THROUGH LOCKDOWN

Do your Christmas shopping!

Just think with all this time at home, you can get really organised this year and get your Christmas shopping done in one fell swoop. If buying British is your thing, look no further than our Great British Gift Guide, but if you just want to leave it to the stars, click here for all the gift guide inspo you’ll need.

Bid on the contents of Alexandra Tolstoy’s Chelsea pad

In April this year, the BBC aired a riveting documentary about Alexandra Tolstoy and her explosive relationship with a Russian billionaire oligarch. It wasn’t exactly a riches to rags tale, but almost, with the upshot being that Alexandra (and her three children) had 12 days’ notice to leave their rather wonderful Chelsea home. In a bid to fill the coffers, Alexandra is auctioning off a wonderful collection of antiques, furniture and objects from the house with Christie’s in an online auction this month.

Organise a lockdown birthday surprise

If you have family or friends with birthdays in November, they’re going to need something that little bit more special to make them feel loved and appreciated. Luckily help is at hand – we have ideas for everything from digital murder mystery evenings to virtual wine tastings.

Stay up late with the Tate

Just as the real-life arts world was beginning to find its feet again, galleries have closed – but fear not: there’s plenty going on virtually. This week, tune into Tate’s digital events programme, which includes a new instalment of UNIQLO Tate Lates Night In focused around the Zanele Muholi exhibition. It’s available online until 12 November. Image credit: Lil C by Joel Smedley.

Catch world ballet premieres from your sofa

During November and December, English National Ballet’s new on-demand video platform will stream five world premieres. Available to rent for 72-hour periods, the productions include the old movie musical-inspired Jolly Folly. Feeling inspired? The platform also offers a variety of ballet-based classes. We’ve pulled together a list of other online course ideas here. Image credit: Le Corsaire, English National Ballet, photography by ASH.

WHAT’S KEEPING MY SPIRITS UP

A CHARLIE MACKESY X LOQUET LONDON LOQUET

Who doesn’t love Charlie Mackesy’s wonderfully uplifting illustrations – he became a solace to many throughout lockdown 1.0 when he posted them on Instagram. Now you can wear his pictures closer to your heart as he’s collaborated with Loquet London on a collection of 50 limited edition pendants, each of which houses one of five of his gorgeous illustrations, with 50 per cent of profits donated to Harley Jae South Charity. We predict a sell-out.

PELOTON

You probably can’t buy a Peloton right now for love nor money, but I’m no fool having got one last Christmas. We smug owners can be done with our calorie-busting HIIT class (Emma Lovewell, you’re my fave!) before you’ve even put your joggers on. No driving rain, no dark streets, no Covid coughers in your way, this is the luxurious end of exercise… and now, their new versions have an added Tread, meaning you can jump off the bike, swivel your flatscreen and finish your workout on the floor. Easy breezy.

POETRY

Sometimes poetry says it all. This week a very generous friend of mine sent me ‘Give lavishly, Live abundantly’ by Helen Steiner Rice, so I thought I’d share it with you too.

The more you give, the more you get
The more you laugh, the less you fret.
The more you do unselfishly,
The more you live abundantly.
The more of everything you share,
The more you’ll always have to spare
The more you love, the more you’ll find
That life is good and friends are kind.
For only what we give away,

Enriches us from day to day.
