Autumn has arrived, it's back to work, and the perfect time for a professional refresh.

From special offers on September courses, to exciting new workshops and unmissable events, here are some great reasons to get your career back on track.

Also in this newsletter: read the latest on the Booker Prize shortlist, discover how an author and Bloomsbury Publishing digital editor successfully crowdfunded her first novel and check out a recent report which reveals a decline in investment in UK workforce training.

Booker Prize 2019 –
a diverse, international shortlist

The shortlist for literary fiction’s best-known prize was announced this week. The baker’s dozen has been trimmed to six, and is possibly the most diverse Booker shortlist in years.

Winning a prize can make a huge difference to a title’s sales, and a publisher's annual turnover. With its back-to-back wins in 2016 (Paul Beatty for The Sellout) and 2015 (Marlon James for A Short History of Seven Killings), Oneworld saw massive growth and turnover hitting £4.5m. Faber & Faber’s win with Anna Burns’ Milkman last year will no doubt see growth in 2019, although 2018 was already a “stellar year”, according to Chief Executive Stephen Page. Much of that boost came from Kashuo Ishiguro’s Nobel Prize for Literature.
This year, odds are on Atwood or Rushdie to win the 2019 prize, but there are often surprises. Good luck to them all.

How do you crowdfund a novel?

Helen Young, author and digital editor at Bloomsbury Publishing, crowdfunded her first novel through award-winning publisher, Unbound. Here, she talks about her journey to publication, whether experience helps and how to give yourself the best shot at reaching your goals.

Decline in employee training investment

"The UK has suffered a long-term and substantial decline in employer investment in training over past decades", according to a recent report from the Chartered Institute of Professional Development (CIPD), with evidence that UK employers are investing less in their workforce than they were 20 years ago.

To address this issue, the CIPD recommends:
  • Reforming the Government's apprenticeship levy into a broader skills and training levy, with contributions from employers with over 50 employees
  • Including other forms of accredited training, as well as apprenticeships, to attract funding aligned to industrial sector priorities
