Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, meeting 11 November 2019

The Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) meeting took place last night at Cleckheaton Library with Martijn, Karen, Gemma and Kathy in attendance, Alice, Mandy, Sarah, Mark, Daniel, Sam, Cassie, Barbara and Pauline having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the last meeting were passed and WIP updates given: Karen has begun a new novel for NaNoWriMo with the working title Undercover which is currently at just under 19k words. She has entered the D. A. Prize for Short Fiction, applied for The Kay Mellor Fellowship (already been rejected for the fellowship) and the Alison May mentorship. Attended a Ghost Story workshop with Aly Rhodes in Keighley where she wrote a drabble (100 words story) and the beginning to a new ghost story (both of which she brought along to share). Also completed the CWG 8 words creepy challenge and brought the story along to share. Martijn has written a quarter of a page for the CWG Remembrance challenge. Gemma has started her new novel and undertaking NaNoWriMo, currently at 5,400 words, 760 written before the meeting. Gemma explained that her story is set in 1869 and gave an outline. She has also completed the CWG 8 words creepy challenge and brought it to share. Kathy has completed the CWG Remembrance writers challenge and brought it along to share.

Feedback sessions: Gemma shared her creepy story which used all the words. The story had a twist within a twist and was well received. Karen shared her creepy story which used all 16 of the words suggested in the challenge. It was felt that the narrator was reminiscent of All About Eve. Karen then shared the beginning of her new ghost story which was well received, particularly the phrase the fingerprints of dried mud. The Group hoped that Karen would complete this story. Kathy shared her Remembrance poem which she thinks she will call Called In Remembrance. It was a powerful poignant poem that touched all members. The Group hope that Kathy will submit this wonderful poem. Martijn shared a poem entitled A Bad Day. The evocative poem resonated with all CWG members. Martijn intends to join the Batley Poets on Saturday (Batley Poets meet every Saturday at Batley Library between 2-4pm) and we hope he shares this poem.

CW comps/workshops/events: Karen attended a Ghost story writing workshop and sent around the information she was given at this workshop including The Witches Hat, details of the UK Ghost Stories Festival which takes place in Derby 29 November - 1 December and a list of places that accept submissions of dark and horror fiction.

Karen was struggling with the hero in her WIP so discussed with the group her synopsis and shared a chapter. The Group gave many suggestions to develop the character, which she hopes to use, and felt that the character was coming across well in the chapter shared. Martijn then shared an amusing poem that had us all in stitches. We hope he shares this fabulous poem with the Batley Poets on Saturday.

There was not time for a writing challenge/session. The next meeting will take place on Monday 25 November 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library. New members always welcome.
