World's largest educational publisher,
Pearson, to phase out printed school books in favour of digital
books
Pearson has announced
that it will no longer be printing textbooks and only updating a
handful. Students will have to rent printed textbooks which will
be updated much less frequently, whereas e-textbooks will be
continually updated with the latest information.
Pearson CEO, John Fallon has told the BBC that "more than
half of the money that the company makes is now through the sale
of e-textbooks."
"We've decided - a little bit like in other industries like
newspapers or music or in broadcast - that it is time to flick
the switch in how we primarily make and create our products."
"There will still be textbooks in use for
many years to come, but I think they will become a smaller part
of the learning experience."

The first Publishing Assistant
Apprenticeship standard launches
The
first of its kind to cater specifically to the publishing
process, this welcome initiative opens up pathways for school
leavers to enter areas of the publishing industry which are
traditionally degree-dominated fields, including editorial,
production, sales and marketing.
Spearheaded by the Publishers Association and a trailblazer group
of publishing employees, the standard has been developed with the
help of Creative & Cultural Skills, who provide skills and training
for the UK’s creative industries, and will be delivered by LDN
Apprenticeships.
The
15-month programme will cover key aspects of the publishing
process from conception to production. Early adopters of the
programme, which starts in September 2019, include Bloomsbury,
Cambridge University Press, DK, Pearson, Penguin Random House and
Springer Nature. Find out more here.

GDPR came into effect

Analytica, Marriott International and British Airways have been
issued with significant fines from the Information Commissioner's
Office for security breaches and violating GDPR, one year after
it came into force.
Every company that uses third parties to process customer data on
their behalf is vulnerable and needs to take this seriously!
