EDITORIAL

What Editors Want: tips from the experts for editorial success
Philip Connor
I interviewed 15 editors whose work I admire for my new podcast, What Editors Want, to find out what they look for in a book and what tips they have for other editors. Here’s some of what I learnt along the way:

Git is a free to use distributed version control software for tracking changes in software development. However, the benefits of using a fully-fledged version control system like git don’t just apply to writing software.

Something old, something new: the story behind Audible’s Hag podcast
Harriet Poland
A few days after I’d joined the company I sat down with one of our producers and we began thinking through ideas for a themed short story collection.

Vector graphics: a no-nonsense guide
Rich Hardiman

The time has come to talk of vector graphics. Of resolution and .ai formats. Of bitmap art and tricks. So your standard bit of artwork made in Photoshop or the like will be a bitmap (not the file format, words can mean two things).

How to handle conversations that begin with “I have a good idea for a book”
Anne Trubek
About 82% of Americans think they have a good book idea, as I have deduced from my study of people I meet in airports and at Belt events. Now, it’s definitely a very feel-good and motivational thing to say sure, everyone has a book in them, but I do not believe this.

Facebook Advertising: the small publisher’s secret weapon
Kaz Harrison
Did you know the amount of time we spend on social media platforms each day has increased by a whopping 58% in the last 6 years? The average Gen Z user now dedicates 3 hours a day to scrolling his or her newsfeed.

Hatching a brand-new bookshop: interview with Pigeon Books
Melissa J. Davies

I think on the one hand it’s a great time to open a bookshop; there have been articles in the Guardian and positive news recently about how indie bookshops are growing despite the current economic climate, but then on the other hand we have the looming threat of a no-deal Brexit that will potentially throw us all into chaos and oblivion.
