Barnes and...Oh, Boy
The legal troubles for Barnes & Noble just got costlier, as a judge has ordered the bookseller to help pay its former CEO's legal costs in an ongoing case. The American Booksellers Association, on the other hand, remains focused on Baker & Taylor and its departure from retail wholesale. Hachette Book Group is having a better day, with the publisher reporting a sales gain in Q1, as is Chronicle Books, which has launched an audio unit with the help of Hachette Audio. And Christian publishing is mourning Rachel Held Evans, who died this week at 37.

We all need a break sometimes. And for writers, that means it's important to occasionally stop writing, as this Paris Review essay argues. A National Endowment for the Arts fellow for poetry concurs, having been given plenty of time to write and finding himself paralyzed during the process. Don't tell George R.R. Martin that, though—fans are really depending on him to finish those books and save HBO's Game of Thrones from itself.

HBG Has Q1 Sales Gain
Revenue at Hachette Book Group rose 3.3% in the first quarter ended March 31, 2019, over the comparable period in 2018. Even excluding some extraordinary items, such as more than $2 million in revenue from Worthy, which HBG bought last fall, HBG CEO Michael Piestsch said sales in the quarter were up over 2018. more »

In Twist, Judge Orders B&N to Help Pay Former CEO's Legal Costs
Among three decisions handed down at a May 6 conference, Judge John G. Koeltl ruled that Barnes & Noble's countersuit against former CEO Demos Parneros can proceed. But in a twist, the judge held that an indemnification clause in Parneros's employment contract called for the company to advance Parneros's costs for defending himself against the suit. more »

Presses Launched and Bought
Penguin Random House grew a little bigger last week with its purchase of Spain's Salamandra while, in smaller press news, a Minnesotan medical clinic is starting its own consumer imprint. Back in New York, Patti Smith has won the 2019 "One Book, One New York" contest and, at its annual meeting, BISG worked to make sense of the supply chain for its attendees. Plus, good news for comics: North American sales are up.

Woody Allen has been pitching a memoir, the New York Times reports, but publishers aren't biting. They are, however, delivering books on fascism to book buyers who have it on the mind. And, in the U.K., Imtiaz Dharker has turned down the poet laureateship.

The Book World Reckons with B&T
Heads are still spinning over yesterday's news that B&T will exit the retail wholesale business, with former clients and competitors alike scrambling for answers. At Simon & Schuster, however, where Q1 profits were up, CEO Carolyn Reidy maintains that an alternative would be found. In children's news today, Highlights has sold trade book publisher Boyds Mills Press and its affiliated imprints to Kane Press, effective immediately. And in New York, a new Shakespeare & Co. is coming.

Books are powerful things, and this week, children's books have proved they have power to spare: when they're not enabling the rise of a Jeopardy! champion, they're causing the fall of a Baltimore mayor. (Dear David Simon: we have a suggested premise for a sixth season of The Wire.) Novels, however, are apparently useless—at least for making a living, says ever-positive novelist Will Self. But they still pack a punch. For proof, just look at The Manchurian Candidate, which turns 60 this year.

Bye Bye, B&T Retail
Baker & Taylor is closing the book on its retail wholesale business, cutting 500 jobs in the process and leaving booksellers with lots of questions. This week's print issue of PW asked some questions of its own, namely: should writers write what they don't know? And is Stephen Chbosky ready for a comeback? One thing not in question is the commitment to diversity at Penguin Classics, with the imprint rolling out four Asian-American classics on May 21.

Canadian bookselling chain Indigo Books and Music is making big moves in the U.S., and they're paying off, the New York Times reports. In indie bookselling today, the big news is the new president of the ABA, Jamie Fiocco of Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill, N.C. In the nation's capital, the historic landmark Carnegie Library, home to the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., and the Kiplinger Research Library, will soon also house...an Apple Store. And back in New York, everyone's favorite scandal-ridden former politician, Anthony Weiner (sorry, Mr. Spitzer), is reportedly on the prowl for a book deal.

B&T to Close Its Retail Wholesale Business

Audio Ain't Goin' Nowhere
Audiobooks, it seems, aren't a trend so much as a new future for publishing, with consumer use of the format continuing to rise steadily. Another big change, in the religion sector of the industry, is the closing of Christian retail chains, leaving questions on whether indies can fill the gap. There's more news from Sharjah this week, as the Emirate was named the London Book Fair Market Focus 2020. And in Washington, D.C., a National Book Award Winner has launched the National Antiracist Book Festival.

Nora Roberts has sued a Brazilian writer, the New York Times reports, saying her work was plagiarized. In Rome, a lost sequel to 'A Clockwork Orange' has been discovered in Anthony Burgess's old home. And at the New Republic, Maggie Doherty outlines the troublingly patriarchal history of the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

Sharjah's Moment In the Sun
The Emirate of Sharjah's turn as UNESCO World Book Capital has begun with celebrations on the Arabian peninsula. In more Middle East–adjacent news, Dzanc has dropped a novel by an Israeli-American novelist that was criticized heavily for its Islamophobic themes. And across the U.S., poets laureate are getting huge fellowship grants thanks to the Academy of American Poets and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Today in books to screen news, the Tolkien estate has disavowed the forthcoming J.R.R. Tolkien biopic starring Nicholas Hoult, the Guardian reports, while Variety takes a look at how George Clooney and Christopher Abbott fought to bring Catch-22 into the 21st Century. Happy World Book Day
It's a new day for imprints, or at least a day for new imprints: one from Skyhorse and one from Law&Crime, both of which are distributed by Simon & Schuster. It's not a new day at all for the seemingly never-ending GSU e-reserves case, although it may get another day in court. And, from this week's magazine, some advice for publishers on how and why to be precise with their vendor specifications and a profile of Liza Wieland in advance of her forthcoming novel, Paris 7 A.M.

Today is World Book Day, which you should celebrate with red roses, as is the Catalan way. It's also Shakespeare Day, which British politician Boris Johnson is probably not celebrating, as the pub date for his book on the Bard has been delayed once more. Prince's memoir, however, has escaped publishing purgatory, and will be released this October. In Sharjah, the opening ceremonies for the emirate's year as UNESCO’s World Book Capital are set to begin this week. And back home, Slate has reviewed the Mueller Report as a work of literature, calling it "part spy thriller, part Game of Thrones."

Big Books for Your Beach Bag
Our annual Summer Reads feature is finally here, so clear your reading schedule for the next, err, 12 weekends or so. A suggestion: why don't you pre-order some of the titles we've recommended from your local bookshop on Independent Bookstore Day? This year's celebration, our bookselling editor reports, will be the biggest one to date. In other news, the push for diversity in publishing continues on.

Following the release of the HBO documentary Leaving Netherland earlier this year, biographers of Michael Jackson have had to make hard pivots during their research and writing processes to account for new accusations of sexual abuse, the New York Times reports. Plus, NPR notes that the Mueller Report is already a bestseller despite being free to read by virtue of being a public government document. Finally, the L.A. Times shines a spotlight on English translations of Armenian memoirs, which are sharing diaspora stories with a new generation.

Booksellers Have That Report You Wanted
While publishers keep racing to publish the Mueller Report first, booksellers have already done so thanks to Espresso Books Machine technology. That's the good news for bookstores today. The bad news is that bookstore sales laid an egg for the second month running in February. And we have reports in this week from TLA 2019 and the International Authors Forum's annual NYC meeting.

Wattpad is headed to Hollywood, Deadline reports, partnering up with Sony Pictures Television. The Guardian takes a look at the kerfuffle over Ian McEwan's comments on his new novel and whether it's science fiction. (He says no. Science fiction writers vehemently disagree.) And in Macedonia, there's a national workshop for handmade paper—just in case you're looking 1. to relocate to southeastern Europe and 2. for a new hobby.

The very first sale for Next Chapter Booksellers in St. Paul, Minn., known until Thursday morning as Common Good Booksellers, was a copy of Will Mabbitt's 'I Can Only Draw Worms' (Puffin). The book was purchased for Roman Bognanni, son of longtime customers Junita Bognanni (formerly of Consortium Book Sales & Distribution) and Peter Bognanni, author of 'This Book Is Not Yet Rated' (Dial Books). Coincidentally, Common Good, which was owned by Garrison Keillor until its sale earlier this week, held a launch event for Bognanni's book just last week.

PRH Wants Rewards for Readers
Penguin Random House, in another effort to interface directly with its consumer base, has created a reader loyalty program, and will give away one free book for every 120 purchasing points stockpiled. Trade book sales were up in February, a much-needed relief after a January nosedive. At Arcadia, David Steinberger and Co. are going through some changes to set up the company for its second year under new ownership. And as the LifeWay closures inch closer, the details of the situation are coming into focus.

TIME magazine has announced its list of this year's 100 most influential people, and writers Marlon James, Lynn Nottage, and Tara Westover have made the cut. In Minnesota, Garrison Keillor's St. Paul bookstore has a new owner and name, Next Chapter Books, while the San Antonio Express-News reports that long-lost works by Franz Kafka might soon emerge following a messy legal battle.

Spring Is for Starting Something New
Simon & Schuster and Modern Library have finished spring cleaning and found space for some new projects, with S&S forming a new nonfiction imprint and Modern Library launching a series of classics written by women. Meanwhile, the centennial celebration of Children's Book Week has begun and, in the wildfire-damaged town of Paradise, Calif., donations are helping to bring libraries back.

In France, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame has swung to the top of the French bestseller list after fire destroyed a good portion of the cathedral earlier this week. Back in the U.S., the country's best teen poets are combining art with activism. And on Antiques Roadshow, a ring filled with Charlotte Brontë's hair was discovered and appraised.

The Pulitzers Arrive While Mueller Is On His Way
Yesterday at Columbia University, the 2019 Pulitzer Prizes for Letters were awarded at a brief ceremony whose winners, as always, remained shrouded in mystery until the final moments. (The Pulitzers release a shortlist only after announcing a winner.) The awards were perhaps mildly overshadowed this year by the impending Mueller Report, which publishers are rushing to release as soon as possible after the redacted report's release to the public on Thursday. In partnership news, Princeton Architectural Press has joined forces with Moleskine Books, the notebook publisher's book line. And Warren Adler, the self-publishing pioneer and author of The War of the Roses, has died at 91.

Another loss to the literary community came yesterday when science fiction and fantasy Grand Master Gene Wolfe died at age 87. In Europe, poems by Rebecca author Daphne Du Maurier have been discovered 90 years after they were written. And in an era of perilous climate, a group of writers have spoken out on the role of fiction in addressing climate change.

Netflix Hits the Books
Publishing and Hollywood can agree on one thing: books are an important source material for film and television. Netflix, never one to slouch on IP acquisitions, knows it, and has been aggressively ramping up its purchasing of book adaptation rights. In Washington state, nonprofits have teamed up to fight the state's Department of Corrections, which banned sending books to prisoners earlier this year and only recently instituted corrective actions to the ban that are nonetheless seen as inadequate. And Jared Diamond is back with a new book looking at how politics keep making our global problems worse.

In Europe, ministers at the European Union have given the final green light to copyright reform, Politico reports. In the New York Times, the elusive E.L. James was profiled this weekend in advance of the publication of her latest, The Mister. And in anticipation of today's forthcoming Pulitzer Prize announcements, here's a look back at every Pulitzer for nonfiction winner of the 21st Century.

Battling Banned Books
The Banned Books Week Coalition has announced its anti-censorship plans for 2019's Banned Books Week with a snappy subtitle, "Censorship Leaves Us In the Dark." Religion publishers are taking another look at the Millennial audience, and MIT is doing the same with the tie between books and podcasts. And over at our sister site, the Millions, the folks behind the Best Translated Book Awards have announced their 2019 longlists.

In more awards news, this year's Guggenheim Fellows have been named. Among the fellows are a range of authors including Catherine Lacey, Carmen Maria Machado, Luis Alberto Urrea, Carmen Giménez Smith, and Robin Coste Lewis. On Broadway, the R.J. Palacio novel Wonder, a big hit in theaters as a film adaptation, will get a stage makeover. It's a big day for libraries, as an "extraordinary" 500-year-old library catalogue summarizing books that no longer exist was discovered in Copenhagen. And, in more modern library news, a Google Chrome extension can help users use Amazon to see if a book is available in a branch of their local library.
