Barnes and...Oh, Boy
The legal troubles for Barnes & Noble just got costlier, as
a judge has ordered the bookseller to help pay its
former CEO's legal costs in an ongoing case. The American
Booksellers Association, on the other hand, remains
focused on Baker & Taylor and its departure from retail
wholesale. Hachette Book Group is having a better day, with the publisher
reporting a sales gain
in Q1, as is Chronicle Books, which has launched an
audio unit with the help of Hachette Audio. And Christian
publishing is mourning Rachel Held Evans, who died this week
at 37.
We all need a break sometimes. And for writers, that means it's important to occasionally stop writing, as this Paris Review essay argues. A National Endowment for the Arts fellow for poetry concurs, having been given plenty of time to write and finding himself paralyzed during the process. Don't tell George R.R. Martin that, though—fans are really depending on him to finish those books and save HBO's Game of Thrones from itself.
HBG Has Q1 Sales Gain
Revenue at Hachette Book Group rose 3.3% in the first quarter ended March 31, 2019, over the comparable period in 2018. Even excluding some extraordinary items, such as more than $2 million in revenue from Worthy, which HBG bought last fall, HBG CEO Michael Piestsch said sales in the quarter were up over 2018. more »
In Twist, Judge Orders B&N to Help Pay Former
CEO's Legal Costs
Among three decisions handed down at a May 6 conference, Judge John G. Koeltl ruled that Barnes & Noble's countersuit against former CEO Demos Parneros can proceed. But in a twist, the judge held that an indemnification clause in Parneros's employment contract called for the company to advance Parneros's costs for defending himself against the suit. more »

Audio Ain't Goin' Nowhere
Audiobooks, it seems, aren't a trend so much as a new future for
publishing, with consumer use of the format continuing to
rise steadily. Another big change, in the religion sector of the
industry, is the closing of Christian retail chains, leaving questions on whether indies
can fill the gap. There's more news from Sharjah this week, as the
Emirate was named the
London Book Fair Market Focus 2020. And in Washington, D.C., a
National Book Award Winner has launched the National
Antiracist Book Festival.
Nora Roberts has sued a Brazilian writer, the New York Times reports, saying her work was plagiarized. In Rome, a lost sequel to 'A Clockwork Orange' has been discovered in Anthony Burgess's old home. And at the New Republic, Maggie Doherty outlines the troublingly patriarchal history of the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
Consumer Use of Audiobooks Continues to Rise
Half of all Americans over the age of 12 have listened to an audiobook in the past year, according to a new consumer survey. Growth can be attributed to more people listening in cars and advances in technology. more »

Happy World Book Day
It's a new day for imprints, or at least a day for new imprints:
one from Skyhorse
and one from Law&Crime,
both of which are distributed by Simon & Schuster. It's not a new day at
all for the seemingly never-ending GSU e-reserves case, although it may get another
day in court. And, from this week's magazine, some advice for
publishers on how and why to be precise
with their vendor specifications and a profile of
Liza Wieland in advance of her forthcoming novel, Paris 7 A.M.
Today is World Book Day, which you should celebrate with red roses, as is the Catalan way. It's also Shakespeare Day, which British politician Boris Johnson is probably not celebrating, as the pub date for his book on the Bard has been delayed once more. Prince's memoir, however, has escaped publishing purgatory, and will be released this October. In Sharjah, the opening ceremonies for the emirate's year as UNESCO’s World Book Capital are set to begin this week. And back home, Slate has reviewed the Mueller Report as a work of literature, calling it "part spy thriller, part Game of Thrones."
