The Great Believers

The Great Believers
By Rebecca Makkai

This was my absolute favorite novel of 2018, and I’m still recommending it whenever I get a chance. I was slow to pick it up originally because I thought the topic sounded too sad, but, one chapter in, I found I couldn’t stop reading, and I really never wanted it to end…

The Art of Gathering

The Art of Gathering
By Priya Parker

It’s not just because the jacket is so pretty that I love this book (but that doesn’t hurt). I am one of those introverts who’s regularly put in ‘social’ situations (meetings, conferences, dinners, and so on). Whether you’re like me, or a natural social butterfly, or a consummate networker, or mixed up somewhere in the middle, I promise you’ll get something from Priya’s advice…

Dreyer's English

Dreyer's English
By Benjamin Dreyer

This is a bestselling book about grammar, usage, and style. Really! I love this in part because Benjamin, the author, is a longtime treasured colleague. I also love it because I wish everyone could be guided by his unfussy wit and wisdom.

Rumple Buttercup: A Story of Bananas, Belonging, and Being Yourself

While this book had been recommended to me by colleagues, it wasn’t until Olivia, the six-year-old daughter of one of those colleagues, walked into my office (which is filled with books), instantly zeroed in on a copy of this one, and clutched it to her heart that I really paid attention…

Madeline

Madeline
By Ludwig Bemelmans

I’ve always loved this brave and spunky heroine. Seventy-five years post-publication, the illustrations of Parisian street scenes are as charming as ever, and Madeline herself holds up very well in the face of bad guys, tigers, mice, and an appendectomy.

A Special Note from E L James

E L James reflects on the magnificent coastal landscape of Cornwall, England—the setting of her passionate new novel, The Mister. She also shares a few of her own photographs of this romantic and unforgettable setting.

I’ve had a deep and abiding love for Cornwall since I was fourteen years old and spent a glorious summer on a friend’s farm roaming and riding through the Cornish countryside. Could one want a more romantic setting? Cornwall has everything—lush, verdant woods, dark copses of evergreens, bleak moors where you half-expect to hear the howl of a wolf, a stunning coastline with soft, sandy beaches, and exhilarating coastal walks above breathtaking cliffs and headlands.

Much of The Mister is set in this beautiful county, from a dramatic seascape to the bucolic idyll of a vast and flourishing country estate. My inspiration was the North Cornwall coast, charming small towns like Padstow and Wadebridge, and Lanhydrock House, a splendid neo-Gothic stately home near Bodmin maintained by the National Trust.

Cornwall’s air is clear and fresh, and the light, especially beside the Atlantic Ocean, is magical—even in the worst of storms. It’s no wonder so many artists flock to the county hoping to capture its beauty. I would encourage anyone who hasn’t been to Cornwall to come and visit all these places. You won’t be disappointed.
