Politics, Prose, and PEN
Getting fidgety over the ever-impending release of the Mueller
report? Surely not as fidgety as the folks at Skyhorse Publishing, who have
already begun readying for a release of the
contents in book form, should they be available to the public. In
the meantime, however, readers will have to make do with other books—for
which PEN America has plenty of suggestions, in the form of the winners of its
PEN American Literary Awards, announced last night in New York.
The 2019 shortlist for
the WNBA's Pannell Award was announced yesterday as well.
In one of the year's big anniversaries, Sesame Street has turned 50! It's a rare classic that remains progressive—unlike, NPR reports, the works of Dr. Seuss and other classics still taught in classrooms nationwide. One can only hope Philip Pullman's upcoming novel The Secret Commonwealth, due in October, will stand the test of time. Then again, provocative sells—which is probably why original poetry handwritten by the infamous outlaw lovebirds Bonnie and Clyde has been put up for sale. And, in unrelated news, an effort to save a black-owned bookstore in Seattle is currently underway.

Kids' Books Today, Bezos From Way Back When
Our big annual "Facts and Figures" compilation is now
live, and will tell you all you need to know about 2018's
bestsellers in children's books. We've also got the scoop on
GalleyMatch, a new matchmaker for
book clubs and publishers. And some digging through our
archives—which you should
subscribe to today, if you haven't already—unearthed a profile of
Jeff Bezos from 1998, when he visited PW's offices as an upstart
online bookseller who couldn't give a fig about profits. (We all know how
that turned out.)
Deadline reports that actor Jussie Smollett has been dropped from further seasons of Empire following his arrest for allegedly filing a false police report. However, his cookbook publisher, HarperCollins, will continue publication of his and his siblings' cookbook, The Family Table, celebrity news site the Blast reports. In Winchester, England, residents have ixnayed the construction of yet another statue of Jane Austen in the city. And, less dramatically, the Chicago Reader has profiled Haymarket Books, publishers of "not just books, but the idea of a new society."

HMH Joins the Audio Fray
The industry was flooded with all sorts of staffing news this
morning, with big changes at
Berrett-Koehler and the MacDowell
Colony, a homecoming at William
Morrow, and an exciting new literary coupling at the
Pushcart Press. But the biggest news is from Houghton Mifflin
Harcourt, where the publisher's trade division, rechristened as Houghton
Mifflin Harcourt Books & Media, has stepped into
the audio ring with HMH Audio, a new unit to be led by executive
producer Tommy Harron.
It's also a day of discovery in the literary world, with the Atlantic reporting on a lab discovering traces of DNA lurking in old books and the New Yorker investigating how the writing process has changed thanks to writing on a screen. And if you're wondering how writers pay the bills while writing a book, a number of them have taken to the Medium platform to explain just that. But the real literary mystery of the day is presented by Netflix: just exactly how is the streaming service going to squeeze 13 episodes out of Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham?
HMH Trade Forms Audiobook Unit
The newly formed HMH Audio will release its first titles this fall and plans to release 75 titles annually drawn from its adult and young reader lists. more »

Wrapping Up At the Toy Fair
This year saw toy sales across the U.S. drop by 2%, in part due
to the closure of Toys R Us stores nationwide. That affected trade
publishers, too, many of which sold books through the retailer—and it was one
of the big points of discussion at this year's New York Toy Fair, which wrapped
up last week. LSC Communications saw a gain in its
book division, which augurs well for Quad, its competitor
turned soon-to-be owner. Speaking of acquisitions, a BIGNY panel
held last week on M&A had a few good
takeaways for publishers. And a must-read feature in this week's
issue of Publishers Weekly examined books on gun
control.
The world of translation lost one of its greats yesterday when Donald Keene, a prolific translator from the Japanese, died in Tokyo at the age of 96. Philip Pullman fans who expected more of the 2007 film adaptation of The Golden Compass might rejoice in the upcoming HBO adaptation of the His Dark Materials series, which saw its first trailer release yesterday. And Playboy has uncovered and released a previously unpublished interview with Maya Angelou from its archive.

LSC Has Gain in Book Group
Sales in LSC Communications' book division rose 3.2% in 2018 over 2017, to $1.06 billion. The gain, LSC said, came primarily as a result of higher volume in educational books and digital products, and increased fulfillment services, as well as a $10 million increase in pass-through paper sales. more »
